@steelwoolf
at least now we know why he has yet to return when Britain is in peril
We need a flick where King Arthur wakes in modern Jamaica and is very confused.
I think that would be so much funny. He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation.
ancient king white boy stuns locals by ordering in perfect Jamaican Patois
He gets to Britain and everyone expects him to sound like a posh noble Englishman because that is the picture Malory painted but he prefers to speak Welsh and when he has to speak English, he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent.
"my great grandmother who survived 3 wars and raised 10 children by herself while working in a factory watching me go to therapy because my parents yelled at me" ok but your great grandmother was also miserable. maybe your great grandmother would be happy you try your best to not be miserable
like have you considered your ancestors wouldve wished to see you be less miserable than them
We are still here, as human beings, because millions and millions of us - since far, far longer ago in our history than recorded time - have looked at the world, and said "I want my children, and my children's children, to have a better life than I did."
Maybe your parents and your grandparents and great-grandparents were among those people - or maybe they weren't, personally. Some people admittedly aren't.
But every human alive is part of an uninterrupted line of hundreds of thousands of years of descent (and that's only since we became Homo sapiens).
We, as humans, have created and built and invented and learned and treated and cured so, so much. Because we kept looking around us, and looking at the people around us, and saying, "I want a better world for the people I love. I want a better world for the people who will come next."
Or perhaps think about it this way:
Would you want your great-grandchildren (or the great-grandchildren of your loved ones / family / chosen family, if you'd rather) to be miserable?
Or would you want those children to take care of themselves, and be kind to themselves, and do their best to find peace and joy in their lives?
Recently my dad handed me my granddad's pit token to pass on to my brother when I next see him.
The pit token (and locker key) was something my grandad had when he worked in a coal mine. Every day he would have it over and receive his safety lamp, and go down the pit to mine coal. At the end of the day if there were any tokens left on the board then they'd know that there was still someone in the pit.
My grandad was an intelligent man. He was politically motivated, wrote letters to the local MP, read countless books about many subjects, listened to a wide variety of music, etc. But he worked down that pit for years to pay for a house and home for three kids. He broke his back down that pit. When his best friend died he locked himself in his shed with a bottle of rum cause obviously Men Don't Cry and he couldn't be seen. He fought in world war 2 and killed men in battle, and he never spoke about it unless asked.
My brother has a masters. He attends therapy. Has his own son now, and he worries about the world. He works in an office, and while he would like to do something he is passionate about rather than admin, I don't think my granddad would ever begrudge the kind of man my brother has grown up to be even if he didn't fully understand it. He wouldn't wish that pit on anyone.
I was debating pre- and post- smartphone existentialism with an older gentleman today and he stopped part way through and said “Why are you a security guard? Why aren’t you teaching this at some college somewhere?” And I didn’t know what to say so I went with “Well I used to make art but nobody pays an artist”
I want to invoke thought and wonder and introspection and encourage the passions of every soul I meet forever and ever and dig until I find the glorious potential for creation and experience and joy in every single one but unfortunately I must pay rent and so I stand, a meat shield, an NPC with unlockable dialogue
#capitalism brain tells you that anyone interesting must fight to the top of their interest#and precludes the possibility of everyone everyone everyone already being interesting
I feel like in the past ten years, boycotting has stopped being a tool for forcing action on specific policies and become a form of harassment and monastic self-denial. Less “I will not be giving my money to you until you improve these specific conditions” and more “don’t touch the contaminated thing, lest you also become contaminated.”
You'd think that having made almost zero progress on your goal of freeing Palestine and instead achieving new and still rising, highs of antisemitism across the globe would make the "I'm antizionist not antisemitic" crowd rethink their approach of activism for Palestine. But alas, that hasn't happened because not all, but a substantial amount of the aforementioned crowd of people actually have harming jews as their real goal.
The purpose of a system is what it does.
Palestine is not in the least bit freed freed but Jews are living in fear and have been cast out of a huge number of social contexts and synagogues are spending more money than they can afford on increased security and Jewish restaurants are being forced out of business and seeing bricks thrown through windows.
The purpose of a system is what it does.
after almost 3 years, i’m finally getting videos on tiktok of people who identify with the free palestine movement noticing antisemitism and they are SO close to getting the point. So So So close. there are nazis sitting at your table because you SAT AT THE NAZI TABLE. i’m not even exaggerating, the connection between the free palestine movement and actual historic nazis and now the widely encompassed neo nazi movements as well as the KKK is not flimsy. yall SAT AT THE NAZI TABLE and are upset there are nazis there??????? u think ur gonna tell the nazis to give up the seats????? those are THEIR seats. THINK PEOPLE. THINK.
Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.
Hit "view post" and lost it
hello tomblrinas, my neck is killing me and I can’t draw right now so instead I’m making this poll. I’ve seen a lot of different folks talk about this and since we only have (I think) one canon height (Augustine), I’ve decided to put it to a vote. What is YOUR headcannoned height for Gideon?
How tall is Gideon Nav?
4’6” (137cm) or shorter
4’7” - 4’9” (140-145cm)
4’10” - 4’11” (146-150cm
5’ - 5’1” (152-155cm)
5’2” - 5’3”
5’4 (163cm) - average woman’s height in Aotearoa and usa
5’5” - 5’6” (165-168cm
5’7” - 5’8” (169-175cm)
5’9” -5’10” (175-178cm)
5’11”- 6’ (180-184cm)
6’1” - 6’3”(185-191cm)
6’4” (193cm) or taller
Reblog for larger sample size please? I want to hear your evidence in the replies!
I’m gonna make a few more of these I think but first I sadly need to run errands and do chores so my entire life doesn’t fall to shambles during this week
Also, I sadly did not grow up using the metric system so please forgive me if the heights in cm are a bit off, I’m very bad at numbers so I used a conversion table to help :,)
I aspire to be as passionate about something as this guy and the orcas are passionate about hating the sunfish
In the sunfish’s defense!!!!!
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty
Behold, Dorothea
(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)
I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.
He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"
So Dorothea's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.
Can't believe you didn't ask him about כי האדם עץ השדה. But to be fair, I'm not sure he'll have had the energy for that. Plus, I'm literally the guy who loves telling people why this verse means exactly the opposite of what people are making it out to be.
A little visit
Wh-what do you mean it’s from a birthday cake
We could have been eating him
This comment was left on a post about making the most of the Libby app. "Excessive use of generous lending policies" is the most absurd phrase I've ever seen anyone use to discuss libraries.
evergreen
looked up Heidi because I'm a journalist
for reasons I can't imagine this publisher of sexless Alaska love stories is averaging under 20 likes each on posts about her books, so if I can be so honest I kind of have my doubts that her books are getting read even with the excessive use of generous lending policies
Also her claim that authors are not getting paid per borrow is.... wrong. With ebooks (which is what she's talking about here with Libby) there are two forms of licensing for libraries to lend out ebooks.
The first kind is that they buy a license for a pre-determined amount of check-outs. I'll just make some numbers up for the sake of illustrating what that looks like: Let's say $20 for 20 borrows. When the ebook has been checked out 20 times, the library has to renew the license and pay more money in order to continue lending out the ebook. The author gets a cut of that $20 as their royalties.
The second kind is literally paying per borrow. (Again just making up numbers here) Let's say the library pays 50 cents every time the book is checked out. The author still gets a cut as their royalties. Is it just 10 or 20 cents per borrow? Yes, but that adds up! AND it means that people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to read my book at all are able to read it, which is great! AND it means that the library is thriving and being used, which is also great!
So yes, authors DO get paid from library activity!!!!!!
Do not feel guilty for using the library. I don't know one single author (except this Little Miss Ma'am in the screenshots, apparently) who would resent their readers for using libraries.
An example of why one should use the Oxford comma.
LOL. I think they tried to fix it.
Nice try. Still no.
Wake up, babe, a new example of why the Oxford comma is a really good idea just dropped...

Klezmer dolphins.
I don’t know that I’ve reblogged anything faster in my entire tumblr life.
honestly they’re better than the band that played at my bat mitzvah
I like dolphins.
I love klezmer.
But as a former band kid, this made me die laughing.
Weight and dieting discussion cw. Rant:
I am so so tired of hearing and reading "calories in calories out" and "it's the laws of thermodynamics" about body fat told to random people and patients alike. I dare any of those idiots to explain the mechanism of action of their prescription. Break down these "laws of thermodynamics" for me, brother.
We have barely scratched the surface on obesity. Hunger hormones are far from the be all end all of body fat. We know epigenetics are real, as politicized as the term is becoming. We know genetic ethnic heritage plays a role. We know a metabolism can be harmed through reckless intervention. We know there are genes that determine a body's commitment to growing and storing white fat cells that have jack all to do with GLP-1. And yet we staunchly refuse to incorporate any of this knowlege into the cultural attitude, which is prevalent in the medical community as well, ironically (not ironically if you've ever worked in medicine. We aren't the bastions of faultlessness some of us want to claim ourselves as).
We still use BMI. We are still flagging tall kids and muscular people and anyone who maybe shouldn't be compared to the "ideal European." We use it in the military. I outperformed at my regular weight, just over the limit for my sex/height. I lost 10 lbs to be safe, and my combat fitness test score went down 30. George Washington-forbid our troops are muscular or robust. Women should be bony! Don't worry about how much more it's gonna hurt when you have a rough landing.
In my professional opinion, the reason so many people refuse to budge that it's anything more than cal-in-cal-out is because they'd have to contend with bodyweight not being a reflection of merit. They tell themselves that their body is a reward they deserve. And any other reality.... threatens how safe they feel. It's similar to disability fear in that way. Facing the music, acknowledging that anyone for a myriad of reasons at any time could lose their ability/simple lean-biased metabolism, terrifies them. There is massive cognitive dissonance in fatphobia. And it's one of the reasons that the "phobia" part is a very appropriate part of that word. They are scared of gaining weight - they are scared of the fact that eventually "the laws of thermodynamics" (lol) won't work for them anymore. "Calories in calories out" is not something they share for your sake. It is a mantra they cling to as a security blanket.
I wonder for how many this metabolism difficulty is already true, and their dissonance stems in part from their compromised cognitive function. See, plenty of people can massively calorie restrict, and lose fat, and that is that. But the body would prefer to eat muscle, first. And the heart is a muscle, don't you know. And when it does eat fat, it doesn't zone target. It does not prefer the double chin before the brain, which is mostly fat. What I'm getting at is that there are also plenty of people who will pretend that they are not part of the group that cannot safely restrict (starve for aesthetics). Because their metabolism/heritage/etc. If you feed yourself 1000 cal a day, in many cases the body will appear to get on just fine. It may not even lose much around the waist. Because for many of us, the body will start doing budget cuts, and the (very) modern beauty standard is simply not factored in when it's decided which organs don't need to be fed. "Cal in cal out worked for me eventually" Ok but did you lose 10+ years of your life expectancy? Are you in perpetual brain fog? I'd rather my thighs touch than lose my ability to think critically, Jared.
All of this of course also assumes a person wants or needs to lose weight. Even in situations where there is a health concern, we fail to consider the negative health impacts the extent and speed of the weight loss we are demanding of a patient will bring. "Your cardiac health is impacted and you'll live to your 60s. Anyways do this diet (and die in your 50s but skinnier)." Wow. Great medical care. Why are we doing this to patients (we know why). We need to ask if weight loss is truly the most effective treatment for a patient and compare benefits and risks before making it the first line. Too many of us in healthcare assume patients don't.... know they're fat. Trust me, society reminds them every single day, and not in a neutral way.
I have worn a lot of hats in my little life. Archaeology, nutrition, trainer are a few. Many of my clients needed to eat more, not less. At least we are aware of macros, now, but you have to actually feed yourself to make that 45/30/25 or whatever count for anything. If you are splitting 1200 cal that way, I promise the body is not super concerned with whether or not most of it was protein. It is going to get its protein one way or another, and it will leach from itself without much prompting. We are all apes. Our metabolism does what it does because it wants us to survive long enough to raise young. How many of the people I see are being held to a standard of specifically a European from the last few thousand, if not few hundred years? 300k plus years of our species and it's looking more and more like a range of body fat was common across cultures, societies, and even clans. Yes, fat, cherished, respected, beautiful bodies rendered lovingly are what we keep. digging. up. We don't assert what are only suspicions in archaeology, but I will say that I am not the only person who thinks that for a lot of people, demanding they not be fat is like demanding they grow a different texture of hair from their scalps. Both are possible, actually, if they starve themselves to the brink of death, endure extreme hormonal changes, or otherwise cause themselves intense health challenges for the aesthetic benefit of people who should never have been asked. Cheers!
