Socializing a wild animal to humans like this can be very dangerous.

It can absolutely be very dangerous. It puts the animal at risk from thinking it can trust humans. There are hunters out there who would love to have his rack displayed in their living room. The animal could turn on the human for any number of reasons. This is especially true during their mating season.

Bottom line: Do not feed most wildlife!

I might have a couple of the details wrong, I don't have the book with me at the moment, but the only recorded death from an animal in Yosemite NP (at least while its been a federally maintained park) is from a deer. A 3-year-old boy had a bag of chips and a buck came over and was essentially demanding food from him. He wouldn't feed it and the deer became agitated, tossing its head. Tragically, one of the antlers pierced the child's armpit and ruptured his pulmonary artery or vein, I don't remember which. Despite best efforts from the rangers and medics, the child didn't make it.

There's no good reason to feed wildlife like this. It both harms wildlife in numerous ways and like the previous posted said, can put humans in dangers as well.

OK SO a frozen baby Homotherium mummy has been found in Siberian permafrost and everybody is going nuts (including me). I had to make another installmente for this series with a figurine that has long been debated to either depict either a lion or Homotherium; Despite anatomical details pointing to the latter, there was no record of surviving Homotherium from the time the figurine was dated to have been made, so it was mostly believed to have been a cave lion. However, the frozen cub closes that temporal gap and makes it more likely that this was in fact the subject of the sculpture. So even though it’s not a painting, here it is brought to life.

There are only around 1,500 native Cherokee speakers left, and most of them are elders

Little Cherokee Seeds is a program where mothers and babies spend all day with first language Cherokee speakers, speaking nothing but Cherokee, so that the babies become a new generation of native speakers. They're also teaching traditional skills and mothering practices to the mothers to pass on.

This is so so important for the survival of the language. These babies are on track to being fluent first language speakers, and they will be able to keep the language going for another lifetime.

We gonna talk about Crater Lake, and Wizard Island and not mention the Old Man of the Lake?

The Old Man of the Lake is a log that floats around the lake. It is somewhat strange in that it floats vertically. It's roughly 30 feet tall, with only about 5 or so feet sticking out above the surface of the water. It was first 'offically' recorded in the early 20th century, though there are oral reports of it as far back as 1896 (and likely earlier still given the cultural importance of Crater Lake to the Klamath tribe of that area.

The Old Man should have rotted away long ago or at the very least become waterlogged and sank into the water fully, but nope. Over a hundred years, and there is this log still in the water just floating.

So y'know how I said the fact that it floats vertically was 'somewhat strange'? Let's get into some actual strange territory regarding the Old Man. It moves. Against the wind. It has been recorded moving in paths that do not make sense, never getting stuck on the shore of Wizard Island, nor the area of shore around the lake. Now that's strange.

So now let's get freaky: The free-floating Old Man posed a hazard to boats since it moves, and only a small portion of it was above water. (though personal boats are no longer allowed on the lake) Anyway, in 1988 a team was using a small submersible to explore the lake. The scientist figured it'd be a good idea to moor the Old Man near the coast of Wizard Island out of their way, for safety. So they tied some rope to it, to move the Old Man. As soon as they did so, the clear blue skies of a warm August day turned dark. The wind kicked up, bad, and it started to rain, then hail, then snow in the span of a few minutes...again in August. Now snow in that area is common, but not in the summer months. It gets super warm in that area in summer (like 70 to 90 degrees on average) So the scientists decided to nope the fuck out of the water, because of this freak storm. They unmoored the Old Man, preparing to get the fuck out of dodge of this summer snowstorm. As soon as the rope loosened and was in the water, as quickly as the storm had come on them, the darkened skies cleared and it was once more a fine sunny summer day.

As a kid, I spent my summers with my family who lives like... 40 some odd miles from Crater Lake National Park so I had this knowledge just kinda buried in my head somewhere.

"The death of any living thing is morally wrong" sure is. . . a take I just saw. I don't understand how people can be so detached from nature and the basics of life that they can come to that kind of conclusion.

Everything that lives will die eventually. No one and nothing is guaranteed a long life or a "natural" death by old age. We all die, most of us sooner rather than later, and we all end up as food for something else. That's just how life works.

My auntie and cousins all want to be cremated because they are deeply terrified of becoming "worm food" and I find that very tragic honestly. I think there is something incredibly beautiful and reassuring about knowing that I'll return to the earth one day and help sustain life even in death. It makes the idea of dying less scary and I wish everyone could know that kind of comfort.

Anyways stop spreading misinformation. Here's a correct version of the photo being passed around. The original removes all credit, and claims the coyotes are invasive, which is a straight up lie. Coyotes and gray wolves literally evolved right alongside eachother. They're both native to Yellowstone National Park.

Don't fucking try to combat the demonization of wolves by instead demonizing coyotes. Stop fucking demonizing species of animals just because you don't think they're cool enough.
