I'm putting together a collection of weird horses in sci-fi art for my art blog and I really love the full two-page version of this particular illustration!
It's from LOGiN Magazine's September 1987 issue, which Lookcaitlin linked to in the original post.
I don't speak Japanese, but this looks like a review of the multiplayer game M.U.L.E., with the illustration featuring the titular robotic beasts of burden, the "Multiple Use Labor Elements."
The illustration was likely done by a Japanese artist specifically for the magazine, since I don't see it on any of the game covers listed online.
I also appreciate the 1990 NES cover by Gary Ruddell, even if that particular beast looks a lot more like a mule than a M.U.L.E.
Anyway, you should sign up for my art blog newsletter! This post comes out in a couple weeks, and it's got more robot horses, a four-eyed horse, a six-legged panther, a lotta lizards... you get the picture.
Well I transcribed the Japanese in the image and have produced a (rough and ready) translation:
The second addictive game following Archon, brought to you by BPS!
An addictive game?! As was the case with Archon, the more you play it, the more you understand and the more fun it becomes, and even these mules are sure to become “Toriko”without even realizing it! (Note: Couldn’t figure out what a トリコ / “Toriko” is. Assumedly, it’s something specific to the game.)
PC-8801 series ¥7,800 Scheduled to be released in mid-September
Mule is a simulation game depicting an exploration strategy that takes place on a planet.
Up to 4 people can play at the same time, and if there are less than 4 people, the computer will take over the missing amount.
You will be able to secure land, produce mules, and enjoy a game with your opponent at auction, while you will be able to experience the infinite expansion.
I know near to nothing about this game but I hope someone finds this useful or interesting!
