The longer you wait to progress the main quest in Fallout 4, the funnier it becomes, especially before tracking down Kellogg.

Cut to Father down in the Institute checking out the spy cams in the SRB to see what his parent is up to, wondering if they’ll finally start tracking him down again, and he just gets to see the Sole Survivor planting a muitfruit farm for some settlers in Nowheresville, MA. How much of a blow to Fathers’s ego and self worth do you think it would be if he’s physically confronted with the fact that, rather than even attempt to find him, his parent is staying up all night building a Slocum’s Joe like some sugar-fueled Nosferatu for some ghouls so they can make tarberry jelly filled donuts? Oh, finally, the Sole Survivor is going to Diamond City to talk to Nick Valentine about finding their child! Oh wait, no, it seems they just came to buy screws and lumber, false alarm.

Colorful Image Colorization is an AI Neural Network software that is capable of colorizing black and white images using thousands of pictures as references.  Keep in mind that colorizing black and white footage using reference images is a hit-and-miss process, and the AI software has to (literally) guess which colors go where. As a consequence, the colorized footage might look quite surreal and psychedelic. [x]

the thing is, after 24 hours of no sleep, people experience irritability, increased fatigue, impaired judgment and coordination, concentration and memory issues, increased cortisol, adrenaline, and blood sugar. not off to a great start, and the courier + team will be stressed enough already, especially christine

after 48 hours, a phenomenon called microsleep begins to take place, which is a brief period (several seconds) during which the brain enters complete unconsciousness. this is involuntary, and though a person may resist it, another period of microsleep will quickly follow. a person's eyes may remain open, but they are unconscious and cannot receive visual input during the microsleep

after 72 hours, fatigue and cognitive issues worsen drastically. additionally, a person may experience depression, paranoia, and hallucinations

add to all that the stress of being drugged, abducted, having your gear stolen, having to organize and successfully pull off a heist with three other people (we all know how well group projects go when the stakes are far lower), being gradually poisoned by the air, dehydration and hunger, and fending off hordes of ghost people who are trying to kill you and it's a goddamn miracle any of them got out alive...

I still think it’s extremely shitty that Raul was given the “maybe the Legion isn’t so bad” opinion when his entire backstory is about women he cared about being hurt and killed by shitty men.

Like what about “my sister was murdered by raiders and then so was this woman I met later who I cared about because she reminded me of my sister and that’s my whole story as a character” conducive to “I guess these raiders who abuse and enslave women aren’t so bad when you’re not under threat from them directly just because they keep small-time raider groups off the roads”

Feels like a weird opinion to give Raul and like it was tacked on him just to have someone say it because Ulysses was cut as a Companion and Raul’s the only one left who doesn’t have any faction affiliations directly opposed to the Legion other than Lily who doesn’t really get what’s going on.

I’m blaming Bethesda on this one.  They only gave Obsidian a little over a year to make New Vegas.  Fallout 3 started pre-production in 2004, full production in 2006 and came out in 2008.  Yes, New Vegas took lots of assets from Fallout 3.  But still, there was a lot of cutting and rushing done for New Vegas.  Why do I bring this up?  Because Ulysses was supposed to be a companion but that was cut from the game.  I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I like to think that Obsidian wanted a Legion friendly companion for the players who wanted a Legion playthrough.  And out of the companions, Raul was the less Legion hating choice.  Lily, Veronica, and Cassidy aren’t crazy enough to support a group that wants them dead or enslaved.  And Boone and Arcade have their reasons for hating the Legion.

Still I think it’s total bullshit.  I don’t think Raul would support the Legion at all.  But I’ve never done a Legion playthrough (yet).  I’m actually kind of curious.  Then again, I might headcanon it away by saying Raul is just telling the Legion Courier what they want to hear so he doesn’t get hung up on a cross.

Mmmmmm no I still blame Obsidian. I mean I blame Bethesda but I also blame Obsidian. FNV is too rife with tone deaf narrative choices (cough cough The Entirety Of The Honest Hearts DLC cough cough) that are not excusable under time constraints and so it ceases to be a slack I’m willing to cut them.

E.g. the tribes in HH were supposed to be racially diverse (so there’d be white, black, hispanic, and Asian Dead Horses for example) but they didn’t have time to make that many tattooed skins so they had to more or less homogenize the skin tones of the Dead Horses and the Sorrows to a uniform brown. Ok.

But we still have the problem where they’re poorly researched caricatures of indigenous cultures for set piece flavor. That was a decision that Obsidian made that stayed through the entire writing process and was in fact a core component the entire DLC hinged on.

I pointed out already that it feels like Raul was made the “eh Legion Ain’t So Bad” companion to fill the void Companion Ulysses left when he had to be cut. But if Obsidian had had more time to make a more polished game and to work out the narrative troubles they had with Companion Ulysses so he could stay in that capacity, we would still have a problem: the only black companion in the game is the mouthpiece for pro-slaver opinions that ring lots and lots of white supremacy bells up to and including the Legion’s leader denigrating Backwards Savages in contrast to himself, an educated white man. As it stands, in his DLC, Ulysses remains the only major plot-important black character, and he’s still the Why The Legion Has Good Qualities mouthpiece.

The only people I don’t blame are Raul Tejada, Fictional Character, because he did not make the decision to put pro-racist-slaver words in his mouth that fly directly in the face of his entire backstory and characterization, and Ulysses, Fictional Character who also got no say in this.

I reject the canon and substitute my own.
