PROJECT HAIL MARY âł Color Palettes III
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed
when people are like âheâs not even attractive you could find a guy that looks like him at any gas stationâ iâm likeâŚ.. well you see thereâs beauty everywhere actually
You can also find a sunset at a gas station
time to break out my favorite photo I ever took
The beautiful art of Thomas Blackshear II
i went to his website and saw even more great art! sharing some more which i particularly appreciated
When I finish this whale shark lamp all 4 of you are gonna be So I'm pressed
She glows now, just so you know, and she's full of string deliciĂśusee string

Good news! Whäle shark lämp đĽ°
A lot more than 4 of us are impressed
My friend's been getting me to watch episodes of Game Changer, and I think Sam Reich might be some kind of Fae Trickster, and Brennan Lee Mulligan is trying to prove that fact with the same energy as Dib from Invader Zim.
Eva Stratt, my beloved, the softest girl you've ever seen.
Why waste the rain?
I'm obsessed with gardening systems that utilize rainwater without the use of barrels or cisterns. My ultimate fav is using bioswales to catch and filter stormwater on the street.
Fun addition: Dams that utilize trees to catch dirt/ stop erosion, and prevent disaster that can come from broken dams.
Also:
SUSTAINABLE URBAN DRAINAGE! SUDS!
We need more of them, in the right places!
Also, using these to reduce stormwater loads in storm events, particularly in places with combined stormwater and sewage systems, could/would be helpful at reducing river discharges of raw sewage. (If climate change is factored in at system level cos more rain in less time needs to be accouted for at rhe large scale designs...)
Plus using constructed wetlands to retain these discharges and treat them before rivers too!
Reading this, then looking out my window to the concrete "drainage" ditch that pools water and breeds mosquitoes every day of the damn year
john really woke up, looked at THIS, and said, âokay monster bait, get in the trap.â
and god did it ever work #myparenting
âgo early, itâs hard to find parkingâ you want public transit. âdonât go on weekends, traffic is terribleâ you want public transit. âonce i parked i had to walk half a mile to the entranceâ you want public transit. âit took me an hour to get out of the area after the concertâ you want public transit. âugh somebody needs to DDâ you want public transit. âcan you drive? my car wonât startâ you want public transit. you want public transit. you want public transit. you want public transit.
"my car broke down and now i have to pay 5k i dont have to get it fixed" you want public transport. "there are so many shit drivers on the road" you want public transport. "i get nauseous in cars" you want public transport. "i'd love to chat with my friends instead of having to focus on the road when we go somewhere" you want public transport. "i hate potholes" you want public transport. "my grandma has to pay 50$ for a shopping trip because she can't drive and needs to use uber" you want public transport. "i don't like my daughter/sister/etc getting in some random dude's car to get home, it feels unsafe" you want public transport. "I want to have a stronger sense of community and know who lives in my area" you want public transport.
I would like to share the story of a very understandable but unfortunate mistake i made at work recently
So I'm weeding our ancient and terrible collection of children's books for the first time in possibly ever, and I'm making a decision about a book about migrant workers by Sandra Weiner, called Small Hands, Big Hands. And I'm not 100% sure and I go to just see if there's anything out there about this book's being notable in any way so I do an open web search for
"small hands big hands weiner"
And then I look at my results for a moment
and then at last I somberly add to the end of my search, "BOOK"
I have one like that:
In mathematics, you often consider the two-dimensional plane - you know, the idealised flat two-dimensional object that extends infinitely - which can be real or complex (doesn't matter what that means)
On this, you can perform a mathematical operation called a "blow-up" (resulting in a more complicated geometry)
I needed to look up a formula related to this, so I confidently typed into the search bar:
"Blow up real plane"
The results were not what I wanted and I am not sure if I'm on a terror watchlist now.
This reminds me of my corsetmaker days when i found myself searching for "extra thick boning."
polyamory would not always fix the love triangle. sometimes it would make it much, much worse. but they should do it anyway
another genuinely unhinged interaction at the job centre today. i should start keeping a log
signed up for a "careers advice" session with the faint hope that it might be useful in some way. i was there for an hour and a half and the advisor spent a full 25 minutes filling out a form for me while misspelling everything (including my first and last name), made me do a "what are your top skills?" quiz, then told me (based on the results of the quiz) that I should consider becoming a plasterer or bricklayer. i have a master's degree in literature
other deranging thing:
prior to the meeting my advisor requested a copy of my CV, so i sent one through. during the meeting, he had my CV open but didn't actually look at it. instead he started rattling off what was clearly his usual script: "so you're going to want an education section, and an employment history section, preferably with bullet points - "
at this point i politely interrupted and told him i actually had those on my CV, and did he want to take a quick look, seeing as it was - conveniently - right in front of him?
"that's fine. i don't need to look at it," he said. "i'm just telling you what needs to be there."
so i spent ten minutes sitting in silence as he informed me about all the things that i need to have on my CV, while my existing CV - which already contains all of those things - sat accusingly between us, which would have been a great visual gag if it wasn't so infuriating
last thing i'll say on this is that when we were doing the quiz he kept physically taking my phone out of my hand to press the "next" button for me, like he thought i wasn't able to do it myself, and the third time he did this i held on to the phone and we had a brief, intense, silent tug of war, which i won
if you, like me, are hesitant to enjoy what kinda sounds like "relaxes food standards" on the surface, I'm happy to report that this isn't "everyone can do what they want with your food supply without oversight" but rather a case where in NYC you had to have a permit to sell food and a second, superfluous permit to sell frozen desserts. This action simply removes the need for the second permit, rolling it into the first permit in order to help small businesses. Yay!
Or do I owe her an apology? Men in Black (1997) dir. Barry Sonnenfeld
I do enjoy a good visual gag, and an old favorite of mine is âthere is Math on a Board in the background that contextually makes no sense.â This broadly comes in 3 flavors I enjoy:
⢠the board is in front of a classroom, and the Math is waaay too advanced for whatever level of pupil these kids are supposed to be; like having the calculus integral in front of kindergartners, or relativistic physics in front of high schoolers.
⢠the board is in front of Criminals, who are Planning Something, and by all rights there ought to be no Math there to begin with. Like. Youâre planning a Heist why do you have the Full Lagrangian on there. Are we taking a rocket to the bank.
⢠the characters are super-genius science fiction people. The Math is âPiâ3.24â with an unlabeled pie chart.
