IWTV Fan: Okay let'sâ The picture. My friend takes the picture. I said "Can I have a picture?" He said "Yeah, of course." And then my friend on the Live Photo said "Give her a kiss". And I remember on Twitter everyone was like, "Oh why did he kiss her?! Blah blah blah blah blah" I'm an adult. He's an adult. To me it's not that deep. I didn't say "No" or "I don't want to." It's a kiss on the cheek guys, it's not serious. Anyway, that was it basically. I don't remember if we took the picture first and then we sat down and spoke. Or if it was after.

The writers do tell on themselves with ghost!lestat being allowed to talk in iwtv, but muse!louis and muse!claudia are silent in tvl. With that said, a part of me is glad they didnât say anything because I know these writers would write something to make lestat the victim of them. Like look how lestat is putting up with louis/claudiaâs abuse.
They truly DID!! Fumble ass season..
All the fans I know were extremely excited for Claudia to haunt Lestat in TVL like Lestat hinted she did in the IWTV finale⊠to call him out just like she did in s1.
And then when we saw Muse!Louis in the trailer we were all happy!! Let Louis haunt his ass for the abuse he put Louis through but no⊠no⊠nothing that happens matters and the plot lines goes no where⊠and nothing matters.
We got the worst written, most racist, character assassination season of Claudia and LouisâŠ

when rolin jones has so little faith in his audienceâs intelligence that he tried to gaslight us into believing loumand never loved each other instead of just writing a compelling loustat storyline in tvl because apparently loving multiple people over the course of your lifetime is impossible

The whole season, Armand's CSA is mocked by ALL characters â a rag doll for sale, rotten boy, etc etc. â all but one. There is ONE character who, despite his and Armand' shared history, doesn't speak on his abuse. In fact it's the one character who speaks favourably of Armand, even though he'd have every reason not to.
And then in the last episode, you have that one character APOLOGIZE TO ARMAND. Louis must atone for the sins of fucking everyone else. Why? Why not Lestat? And don't tell me it's because Armand secretly always loved Lestat more â the writers had six episodes before this one to SHOW us that Armand loved Lestat and did fuck all with it. I'm not buying it now.

Uh hey, IWTV fandom? I realise that the last time us South Asians were discussing this you might not have noticed, but you can't go around definitively assuming that Armand and Fareed are Muslim. Rashid, yes, almost definitely, and so Armand was performing Muslimness when he was being Rashid.
But Arun is a Hindu name. (And rather Vedic at that which further complicates the identities at hand.)
And Bhansali is a Gujarati surname, could be Sindhi maybe Rajasthani, mostly Hindu but possibly Jain. I've had fun headcanoning him as a Bombay boy with Parsi mom and Gujju dad but he could be a Karachi Sindhi Muslim...
The point being that there are no clear signs that give either of these characters a religious identity.
Which is shitty, racist writing, because it is ludicrous to write South Asians without a clear religious and caste backstory.
And they have been doing this sloppy, incoherent writing from the beginning, when they had Louis say 'alvida Dr Bhansali' and him respond with 'hamaare punah milne tak' straight out of bad Google translate. Alvida is more Urdu but punah is Sanskritised Hindi so who knows what he fuck common language the show was trying to say existed between Armand, Fareed and Louis.
This is not to take away from people's critiques of making brown men live cast a beheading etc. But they have not been stated clearly to be Muslim and it is in fact an additional proof of racist bad writing that it is unclear if they are or aren't.
A couple of things since I see people saying things in tags:
Armand himself would DEFINITELY know whether he was born into a Muslim family or a Hindu one depending on whether he was circumcised or not. And so therefore all his sexual partners/abusers would also know it. There is no ambiguity here, even if his memories are lacking.
Armand cannot be Roma because that is a specific set of ethno-cultures which consisted of North Indian migrant castes who left South Asia around 1000 AD, well before Arun was born. Would he have been mistaken for Romani in Europe over the course of his centuries of living there? Yes, almost certainly, as Nikki did when he yelled at him. He would also have been mistaken for any other flavour of Other, including Arab, Persian, Egyptian, Ethiopian, Carribbean, and has probably been called slurs in multiple languages up to and including the n-word. Which was, 200 years ago, used for brown South Asians as well as Black people.
Assad Zaman is Muslim but Gopal Divan, who plays Fareed, is not. He would have been born into a culturally Hindu family. (Bally Gill, who plays Rashid, was born to a culturally Punjabi Sikh family.)
And can you put the facts of him being 'Bengali' and being kidnapped in Delhi together into a coherent backstory? Sure, if you work hard enough. A bunch of us spent a couple of entertaining evenings in a discord server doing that. But I strongly feel that fans should not be twisting their brains into knots to try to make sense of the pathetic drips and drabs of backstory given for Armand, when the real message that this incoherent characterisation sends is that THEY DON'T CARE. No matter how hard Assad may work to find an internal throughline to his character, the writers are giving him nothing consistent to work with, there is no show bible with details that should define his characterisation, and Armand in IWTV and TVL is written as an Orientalist mish-mash of whatever nonsense whiteness wants of the character at that moment.

You can't take out the earnestness and sincerity of the bench scene. No matter how hard you try.
Two traumatized individuals coming together to make someone new and healing. No matter how flawed it may be.
So I tried to edit all Armand clips from the s3e7 apology scene into one uninterrupted take and managed to narrow it down to one cutaway instead of EIGHT that were in the actual episode. It still ended up looking choppy and I had to shorten some of the dialogue for pacing, but you can still tell it was all originally one shot and they shredded it to hell in the editing

I keep getting angry again about the way amc is handling Armand and what that means to Assad.
Iâm prepared to accept that maybe Assad doesnât gaf and Iâm projecting my own experiences of the workplace onto this. Only he could say for certain.
To recap:
- Assad was a successful actor but little-known outside of theatre when he auditioned
- he auditioned to play the role of Louisâs servant Rashid, for which he had to break into a theatre at one point
- show runners let him know during the audition process that Rashid was secretly Armand and put him through several more rounds of auditions
- Assad took the initiative to read TVA & other books to become an Armand expert
- he also took the initiative to learn French for the role
- one of his characterâs major plot lines (of being the first vampire capitalist/ art dealer/ pilot) was given to another character (Louis) to make that character more interesting and give him more screen time
- amc barely promoted him or his character for S2, despite him being a central character of S2 and having been the plot twist for S1&2
- amc excluded him from promotion again in S3; they did do a âfunnyâ red carpet interview where he had to read a comment from a fan asking where he was in the promo
- showrunner reassured us that Armand was doing a lot behind the scenes and they couldnât spoil it
- S3 has another character (Lestat) experiencing grooming & parental abuse that just isnât there in the book, mirroring Armandâs abuse right down to the icy blonde hair Gabriella has (sheâs also more Italian in the TV show). Meanwhile, scenes where Armand shares his back story with Lestat & Gabrielle are entirely absent from the show.
- In fact, all of Armandâs canonical scenes are eliminated and instead he is going to AA, stalking Daniel pathetically, starting a new cult, beheading his exes, and doing other total nonsense the show runner invented for no real reason other than to avoid adapting the actual book
- s3 also gave Armandâs charming Halloween moments from QotD to Lestat
- after this baffling season was fully out, amc decides to send the Dubai trio to SDCC (notably absent were the two actors who had the most screentime and had been heavily promoted). This was the first time audiences got to see Jacob & Assad do interviews together.
- new post-season interviews reveal that Assad still doesnât know how Danielâs turning will be written, whether Armand and Daniel are doomed, or whether Armand will ever have a story beyond being in love with Daniel and being every seasonâs plot twist. Whatâs extra nefarious is that it seems Assad has been told Danielâs turning will look like Davidâs turning by Lestat, which means his character has lost his charming and sympathetic plot beats to other characters, but he will be given the heinous and unforgivable actions of a white character to play. Just let that sink in.
- latest interview from TV insider reveals Assad wasnât even told what Armandâs arc was and what would happen in the finale. He DIDNâT GET TOLD WHAT HIS CHARACTER WOULD BE DOING IN THE FINALE UNTIL RIGHT BEFORE FILMING IT, which means no time to negotiate, just act the scenes. It also means he was unaware during previously filmed scenes where they were going
- post-season interviews with writers have them doubling down on their poor choices and never addressing the âhey, isnât that racist?â commentary
- In a post-season interview with Menâs Health, Sam Reid reveals the actors are âtrappedâ in multi-season contracts
- in another interview, the finale director said Assad was doing the best acting heâs ever seen in a single long shot, which the show runner re-cut and broke up to include more shots of Louisâ decapitated head
This show and this role SHOULD BE Assadâs breakthrough moment. He has done everything an actor can do to learn the character, delivered incredible performances, and been gracious about everything.
To see him get robbed of scenes and character lore, and be excluded from promo is bad enough - to know he is trapped in a contract and has to play this racist caricature of the character he signed up to play is horrific.
Even worse is knowing that a lot of Armand fans are so sickened by the show at this point that we might not stick around for another season. Where does it leave Assad if his character just keeps getting less likable and the only fans left are the Armand haters?
âWe didnât get the last episode script until quite far into the shoot, so none of us knew what was going to happen in the final episode,â Zaman said. âRolin [Jones, executive producer] just kept telling me, âJust be prepared, be prepared. Just make sure youâre prepared.â I was like, âI donât know what that means.â And then I was like, âAh, OK. I need to get down and get learning because thereâs a lot to learn.â He talks a lot in this episode, but I think itâs all stuff that has been brewing for six episodes. Itâs a little play-within-a-play situation. It was lots of fun acting with Headless Louis.â
Bro what??? How are your actors not at least apprised of what's coming??? Why did they spend months in that Writer's mansion in LA if they couldn't even give them the full scripts ahead of time??? Rolin Jones, dude WTF

Interesting interview in many ways.
Assad having no clue what his character arc was seems like a bit of an oversight.
Telling him to prepare without telling him what he's preparing for seems like an absolutely useless note.
It suggests that the scripts were late and/or being rewritten a lot, which does support the sense I have of a slightly chaotic production.
Eric thinks Daniel has "Stockholm Syndrome" and is "mesmerized" by Armand to the point his "personality is being erased". Assad thinks "Armandâs not mind-tricking Daniel...heâs very much autonomous". So clearly neither of them have any clue what the relationship even is at this point and are guessing as much as we are.
For the final episode, Assad says it was fun acting opposite Louis's head and Eric praises Assad's acting. Neither of them has much to say about their character's motivations or the internal logic of the scene which is an interesting omission. (Obviously things get cut from interviews, so maybe Assad explained everything and they just chose not to print it.)
âWe had a lot of conversations about what is going on, and what do we really think about whatâs going on? Not in the ways that has been asked of us, but just us as two actors going, âWhat?'â This quote from Eric could read a few ways, I suppose, but it reads to me as, again, they are just as baffled as we are.
I try not to project my own feelings onto the actors, but I just don't get any sense of them having a strong grasp on their character's arcs or where they're going.
