Though I don’t think it’s a definitive indicator of explicit anti-zionist ideology (its just overall not very definitive at all), but it’s still never a bad thing to know there’s at least some level of care being put towards the cause. I would still want Palestinian writers to be present in the writers room for the upcoming season.
Edward Saïd’s Orientalism quotes Karl Marx: “They cannot represent themselves; they must be represented.” The very existence of Orientalism refutes this quote, as a huge part of the issue is representation without the consent of those represented, leading to glamorized yet savage representations of the East that are closer to fiction than any reality. On a grander scale, it manufactures consent for colonization by painting its people as either entirely violent or entirely helpless and the West as the voice needed to save the East from itself. Applying that in the context of the current discussion involving Palestinian representation in IWTV (especially as Edward Saïd’s work applies directly to this issue as he’s speaking from a Palestinian perspective himself) Palestinians have the right to represent themselves. This would apply even if Hannah Moscovitch wasn’t the showrunner, even if she had a long history of Pro-Palestine activism, but especially due to her history I think it’s all the more essential, even if we’re now aware that she doesn’t support Israel’s accelerated genocide in Gaza.
Also, a refresher while I’m at it since it seems that people are forgetting: The Palestinian genocide has been ongoing since 1948 and is not only limited to the 2023 acceleration of genocide in Gaza. The genocide is also a part of active settler-colonialism and not only limited to the apartheid under Israeli occupation. Anti-Zionism = complete delegitimization of Israel, not coexistence of colonizers and colonized or genociders and their victims under a genocidal colonial state, as indigenous victims of genocide will always be oppressed under the dictation of their colonizers and killers.

even beyond the overt racism, this is really why rolin's TVL is so gross I think: because it was written specifically to hedge against criticism by positioning itself as some sort of misunderstood underdog (like its protagonist) and spur fans to create things just like this, which they're falling for hook line and sinker.
the whole season is transparently a meta storyline of a gay white man who believes that he's the victim of unjust persecution --
-- not any kind of systemic societal persecution, because he's too powerful and flippant for homophobia to ever touch him, nor do vampires even really want him dead because he chickens out of convincing the world that they're real --
-- but of some vague prejudice against him for existing because he's just too cool and radical, in some immaterial way that like the aesthetic rebelliousness of tim burton and rolin jones doesn't stand for anything, even any principles specific to vampires in-world.
so he manufactures his own narrative, told in his own words to the audience, where he triumphs over this supposed prejudice literally in his own mind and nowhere else, because that supposed cruel persecution does not in fact exist and so there is nowhere in the world of his show to actually triumph over anything. it's a cynical, fourth-wall facing season of television about a man who despite his transgressions defines himself by victimhood and must warp everything and everyone around him to justify that identity, whose grand self actualization consists of pithy comebacks to made-up caricatures of people in his head.

This movie meant so much to me as a brown girl growing up. White people taking one of the only brown girl movies we had, making it all about her white best friend, then pushing the white actress into hollywood stardom and having to watch as she became a household name whilst Parminder Nagra was delegated into relative obscurity has been one of the most infuriating experiences of my life. Brown girls couldn't even be the breakout stars of movies made for us.

This may be overly generous of me, but Julian Bashir avoiding treatment for mental illness like the plague makes perfect sense when you consider the incredible degree of pathologisation we see leveled at the only other augments we see in ds9 and how that is used to limit their freedom. Like the one to one connection and looming threat is right there but, because no one comes out and says it, it goes over everyone's head (probably because they've never had to face that kind of pathologisation before). Like of course he's keeping that shit locked down, anti-augment bias is explicitly written into law, god forbid what isnt written down. All it takes is one or two psychs with a little bit of bias and he could be institutionalised, maybe for life, just for being a little traumatised.
Like this isnt your straight bf avoiding therapy because of toxic masculinity, this is a marginalised man in an extremely tenuous position surrounded by people who are constantly looking for An Excuse.
And we do see throughout the different Star Trek series that while they seem to have mastered treatment of physical ailments, they do not handle mental ailments well. At all. Officers with obvious, blatant, violent PTSD are still allowed to serve in areas of authority over people they absolutely will mistreat due to trauma-induced bias. We NEVER see Miles O'Brian get therapy. Data, despite being loved by his crew, is still treated as awkward and annoying when he basically acts like a mildly autistic person (his poetry is DELIGHTFUL and I will fucking fight you). Reginald Barclay? Holy shit don't even get me started. Julian does his best to treat the physical component of Garak's implant-induced psychosis, but what is the follow-up? (Not that Garak would accept trauma counseling, but that isn't the point.) Even Sisko, did he get therapy after his wife's death? Because he clearly has not dealt with his rage issues about the Borg any more than Picard has.
The closest thing to serious treatment for mental illness that I recall seeing is when poor Tuvok basically set his own brain on fire to try to help Lon Suder overcome his antisocial tendencies (and succeeded but not without lots of consequences). And can I count that, in good conscience, having read the Voyager aftermath books and knowing how deeply traumatized Tuvok was by the time he made it home? Knowing that as a Vulcan he would experience unique cultural pressure to stuff all that trauma down where no one could see it and pretend everything was okay while inside he was a bag of glass shards grinding against each other every moment of every day? He doesn't even want to SPEAK to the rest of the crew when it's finally over (and thank fuck for his wife who seems like an absolute angel, for treating him with empathy and grace when he basically begged to just crawl into bed with her and never leave (which I can imagine is shocking behavior on Vulcan), and then protecting his peace with her teeth bared when his former crewmates came calling. Absolute legend).
Star Trek does not handle mental illness or neurodivergence well. It's a huge crack in the utopian vision. Julian Bashir isn't living in a utopia, he's living under constant threat, and his fear is justified.

Anyone else think the reason ds9 deeply resonates with Queer people is because, at its Heart, its about a third space created but a group of patriotic people fundamentally alienated from their own people. Like obviously garak and quark but consider how were told in the first episode that Kira has been sent there to get her "out of the way" of the civilian government, how the things shes needed to do to both survive and secure their freedom seem deeply uncomfortable to all the civilian leaders. Dax considering both Joran and her eagerness towards reassociation make her basically a non entity on Trill. Bashir takes a while but the augment reveal puts him firmly in this Category. Obriens difficulty with his ptsd and moving passed personal préjudices puts him at odds with a lot of federation ideals. Siskos deep trauma around the loss of his wife and inability to move pass this, makes him very inconvenient to a federation desperate to pass itself off as a Utopia. He then becomes more and more unacceptable as he leans further into his role as in emissary, with the federation seemingly very uncomfortable with this religious expression. Jesus, Worf begins his tenure by getting himself exiled from klingon space.

every time i see talks of the Dax symbiont being inherently reckless i think about that scene in Rejoined where Lenara tells Jadzia:
"Dax, I am not like you. I don't have a little Curzon inside me telling me to be impulsive, to ignore the rules, to give up everything I've worked for"
so Kahn ascribes Jadzia's behaviour pretty much exclusively to the influence of her last host. which means that either 1 this is true, Dax used to be more normal and it only looks like it has always had a crazy life bc we're missing some kind of context, or 2 Lenara deep down knows that Dax has always been that way, but she's trying to convince herself that Torias Dax would have let her go and all the pain that this reunion is making her feel is just because Dax has changed now.
or! trill society dysfunction secret third option where this comment is a symptom of trill culture ascribing all "bad" and undesirable behaviours to the hosts. and it's unthinkable to Kahn that a trait could go deeper despite the evidence she surely has. because the symbiont is idolized and believed to do no wrong and it needs to be protected from bad influences through unnaturally rigurous host screening so no one notices when it is the problem
