i just saw companion and it was so!!!
one detail i LOVED is that due to her programming, iris' maximum intelligence doesn't turn her into, like, a supercomputer based only in logic who can calculate 10000 equations per second or something. the top level is just "ivy league school graduate", meaning "very smart and quick on the uptake, but not supernaturally so". i loved this because
it made her increase in intelligence a game changer without totally breaking the plot. she's more able to logically think through her next steps and put pieces together much faster, but she's also still emotional, can still forget details that would derail her plan, and still prone to basic human error. (for example, yes, a harvard grad would still probably forget about the voice-activated controls in the car if they were extremely freaked out and just focused on surviving the next hour)
the fact that josh set her intelligence at 40% underlines what a fucking loser he is. he had no reason to believe setting her to maximum intelligence would, like, make her dangerous or something - it was literally just because he could not stand the idea of his girlfriend being smarter than him, so he made her just intelligent enough to hold a conversation with, but still a bit of a ditz who could never examine things too closely or think too deeply and thus know something he doesn't

Pride Flag but for people who think Pride should be a respectable SFW event free of sexual debauchery and provocative clothing. Differs from the Gilbert Baker Design in that its colors are sampled from this image of Reverand Lovejoy's Wife screaming "Won't someone please think of the children"

I went to kabbalat shabbat at an Aussie shul (reform) for the first time last week. After services, in addition to challah and pastries and tiny glasses of wine, they had hard liquor (gin, vodka, and scotch) which I have never seen before at an American shul. Is this an Aussie thing? Did I just go to square shuls in the US? Is it more common in other denominations?
Does your synogogue normally provide hard liquor at the oneg?
yes
no

I thought about trying to divide results by region or flavor of judaism but it seemed to complicated. Lmk in the replies or comments.
What American shuls are you going to where they *don't* have hard liquor???? For context I'm Orthodox, pretty much every Orthodox shul I've ever been to (and they've all been in either the US or Israel) has had hard liquor available during Kiddush. Some shuls would have more or less than others, some would advertise it more or less than others, but they'd all have l'chaims available if you wanted some.
itโs certainly common (but not universal) at the kiddush, but Iโve never even been to a shul that had an oneg at all (Iโve only been to orthodox shuls ftr)
Reform, our onegs never have hard liquor. In fact about half the congregation will pick kosher grape juice over the mouthful of Maneschewitz. Of course, I will also point out that most Reform and Conservative Jews are driving home from shul while most Orthodox Jews are walking!
