what did it feel like though? i’ve long been curious about scorpion stings, but there are none in the area that i can go out and get stung by for research :(

Electric. An instant of shallow pinprick pain followed by a surge of dark, pulsating heat that traveled from the swell of my thumb all the way up my arm. My blood felt like it was simmering quietly under my skin and my whole hand quickly stiffened with mild muscle contractions, as though I had been gloveless in the bitter cold. My skin was very hot to the touch, pink and noticeably swollen, and remained so for about twenty minutes. I felt the dark internal heat inside my hand and wrist for another few hours, but it quickly stopped being painful and just felt heavy and strange. It was much less localized than a bee or a wasp sting--from the sensation alone, I couldn’t have pinpointed the exact location of the puncture; although I was stung at the base of my thumbnail and on my palm, it felt like a big wash of sensation all through my hand and wrist. The sharp brunt of the pain was over in under a minute and gave way to a deep throbbing soreness that gradually faded to neutral weirdness.

It was more intense than a paper wasp sting, but less annoying. Paper wasp stings feel very sharp and biting and more like injuries, but the scorpion sting was a much more full-bodied flavor profile.

Note: this was a harmless species, and done under the supervision of experts who could have gotten me an EpiPen if I had a bad reaction.

Tbh you’d think experts would document what it feels like to be stung and bitten by all sorts of things and educate the public on it so that even when you don’t see what bit you, you can make a very educated guess based on the experience of it, the bite site and the context. It might actually save lives.

It might also help avoid panic if people know what a normal reaction is and what did bite/sting them.

I think it’s too subjective for that to be useful. The sensation of a sting or bite probably won’t help you identify it, and the main things to watch for are signs of anaphylaxis or like... body functions failing and systematic reactions. The sensations I felt might be different if I were stung on the thigh instead of the hand, or if I had been drinking caffeine, or if my muscle mass or hormones were different, or if my brain were wired differently, or if the scorpion were a separate but related species. If you can’t figure out what stung or bit you, keep an eye on your symptoms and on the wound itself for signs of infection.

tfw when idiots on tumblr who know jack shit about thermo assume the dude is ‘correcting misinformation’ when actually he’s dead ass wrong. ‘Spontaneous’ is a scientific term - it means a reaction with a negative Gibb’s free energy, i.e. a reaction that will occur without an external energy input, i.e. water boiling because of low atmospheric pressure. Spontaneous is absolutely the correct term for what she’s observing, and that is ‘simple thermo’, and this is ‘correcting misinformation’.
