I WANT TO READ ALL THE BOOKS, STUDY ALL THE LANGUAGES, ADMIRE ALL THE ART... BUT I AM JUST SO TIRED!!!
in the grocery store acting like i have money
does anybody got recommendations for good resources to practise reading Japanese?
I'm looking for like something like with mostly hiragana and katakana characters and just a small amount of kanji. something like manga or a magazine would probably be the most fun, but maybe like an elementary school story book would be easier to find?
I need to actively practice my kana so i don't lose it and drilling the list of characters is really boring.
i always recommend tadoku if you want something beginner-friendly. they have a lot of short stories organized by level and it's easy to go through and see which ones are suitable for you. most of the beginning level ones will have furigana even if they use kanji so they should still be good practice if you want to stick with hiragana/katakana.
here's what one of their stories look like:
hope that helps!
Absolutely agree! The NPO Tagengo Tadoku currently is the best free online archive for graded readers in Japanese and has been for a while now.
If you are interested in physical books, I can recommend the following series:
レベル別(べつ)日本語多読(にほんごたどく)ライブラリー
日本語多読(にほんごたどく)ブックス
げんき多読(たどく)ブックス
The first two series follow the same level system as the free online archive above (0=absolute beginner to 5=advanced), but the third series is designed to accompany the Genki textbooks, so books 1-2 are for book 1 and 3-4 are for book 2.
At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
technically you can, if you don't care about degrees.
Free Harvard courses. Free Courses from Stanford. Free Courses from MIT. Free courses from Yale. Free courses from Princeton.
Free courses on Coursera.
Free Courses on EDx Free Courses on Alison
For paid, there's The Great Courses+/Wonderium. 20$ a month for unlimited courses.
When searching, the phrases you're looking for are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), or you can do a general search of say, "free online college courses." Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place. Sign up with them and you will get things like THIS IS WHY THE LEFT IS TURNING YOUR KIDS TRANS AND GAY in your inbox.
it’s not a myth. it gets easier. every bit of hard work is worth something. it builds you up.
just remember it could always be worse. we could still have PE.

Damn right I’m reblogging. See previous post re wrath of whatever from high atop the thing.
I know that a lot of you are banking on having little to do with your nephews/neices as children and then becoming their "cool aunt" once they become teenagers, but I think that you will find, upon analysis, that a random middle-aged woman stepping into a whole-ass teenager's life and arbitrarily declaring herself to be a "cool aunt" is, in fact, the least cool thing it's possible to do.
Sometimes I am thinking oh I wish I was more productive, had my life more in order like those people on YouTube who make productivity videos.
Then I realise I am actually doing a PhD in chemistry in order to be here I needed to be productive, I AM productive!
No front against YouTubers, I mean I watch them a lot and many have good advice but sometimes I am wondering if someone is a full time YouTuber making productivity content, and this content is making people like me, who actually have been productive for the last 21 years (that’s how long I have been in education/academia), if it is a correct portrayal of what productivity looks like.
As much as I wish my day would look like theirs, no one is vlogging the 14 h lab day doing repetitive experiments because it’s not aesthetically pleasing and doing what I do I can’t expect my days to look like theirs!

Finally it is getting colder! The deadline for submitting my PhD thesis is getting closer and I also need to submit my paper asap! Sadly my experiments did not go that well. I wasted another sequencing run and it failed without any reasonable explanation to me! But somehow it did not affect me at all and I am just trying to keep going and wrap up my project! Writing down my thesis/paper definitely helped me to focus on what experiments I should prioritise!
Today I stayed home and continued writing my PhD thesis. Luckily there will be lots of figures so I can fill me thesis with those ^-^ I also continued reading Northanger Abbey and it is sooo hood!!!

Everything is nice and cozy until the fruits fall off and it smells like sh** 🤣 I heard Japan likes to plant the female trees that have fruits whereas in Western countries the male one without fruits is preferred.
There is a case in Canada where the city accidentally planted the female tree in front of a person‘s house and he has to deal with the smelly fruits but he is also not allowed to remove the tree otherwise the city would fine him. Thanks for nothing I guess xD
Little things that improved my life 𝜗𝜚˚⋆
Accepting my sleep schedule. I'm a night owl; I focus at night, I'm calm at night, I'm motivated at night. For a long time, I tried to fight this since everyone always preaches getting up early, but since I started accepting my natural sleep schedule, I've been feeling a lot better and have become way more productive.
"drink more water". TEA. Tea is the secret here. I will be honest, I hate drinking water; it doesn't matter if I have a cute water bottle or a cute glass, I still hate it. TEA.
Replying quickly. I used to be one of those people who get a text message and think, "Oh, I'll reply to that later", and then just forget about it entirely. Now, I text back as soon as I see the message. This has not only improved my texting anxiety (which I cause on my own by now replying and then feeling bad) but also deepened my connection to my friends. <3
Keeping my circle small and being okay with that. Over the past months, I've had this sudden urge to expand my social circle and get to know more and more people, especially after I moved in August. However, this quickly ended in what I like to call my "social burnout". I was tired, annoyed, and overwhelmed. It took a few weeks for it to settle, but I've come to the conclusion that I would much rather have a smaller circle of people who I trust and love deeply than a huge group of friends, and that's totally okay.
Wearing what I like. Even though I live in a big city, I'd still say that my style can sometimes be a bit more extravagant than what most people wear, another point is that I'm very uncomfortable with pants so I only wear skirts, which is also considered a bit odd where I live. But over the past years, I've come to accept that and have become so sure of myself and found such comfort in my style that I now just wear whatever I like, and it makes every day a little bit nicer.
Reading and writing for pleasure. Reading books outside of my studies and spending time researching topics that simply interest me is such a great way to calm your mind. Same for writing, I always like to say that to write is to think; putting your thoughts on paper in cohesive and well-crafted sentences that you can then reread and think over again is such a liberating thing to do.
Reaching out more. fuck the whole "double texting" and "no contact" thing. If you want to speak to someone because they mean something to you, then just do it. Unless they specifically asked for space, you shouldn't feel bad about wanting to be in touch with them. Many even really appreciate it when you show that you truly care. Let's stop the nonchalant act, and instead, let's face deep emotions and true vulnerability. <3
As always, please feel free to share your own little insights and things that helped you improve comments! <3

Love this! The best advice you can give yourself is not to only try to improve yourself but most importantly to try and ACCEPT who you are at this very moment and be okay with that 🤍
🪶🍂 already my favourite book of the year. i‘ve read the trilogy so often as a teen and it means so much to me, and this month the author published a fourth book that takes place a few years after the events of 1-3 end. i love it so much
Can’t wait to get it when I am back in Germany 😍
I am sick and tired of my lab! It isn't even the research or the PI but the other people!
They just make up rumours about people, there is so much gossip going on, also so much racism because the Japanese people (I am in Japan but our lab is very interantional and our PI is also very open and studied in the US was a PI there so he really is not the problem) are blaming and accusing foreigners of not refilling the stocks. And some particular staff member is participating in all this shitty behaviour! And the target of all this bullshit are people who just want to do their experiments and literally are the nicest people in lab.
I don't know if it is because we are such a big group that rumours propagate, but the racism really annoys me because it doesn't matter there are only two types of people, people refilling the stock and people not refilling the stock, it has nothing to do with race or nationality and only with character and shitty character exists everywhere. Also the irony that people making up false rumors are the one's complaining about other people's shitty characters.
Luckily there are a handful of people who are decent and who I like and get along well! But the other people are so annoying.
It is so sad because we have such a nice environment for research, lots of budget, many machines, the freedom to execute the experiments how we want, freedom to work on what we want and then people instead of making use of this they start making up rumors and focus on superficial shit.
It is so sad because usually people have such a positive view of Japan but I think there really is a problem that for anything that goes wrong foreigners or tourists are blamed. Like okay there are some people who behave wrongly but it doesn't mean that Japanese people never behave wrongly! I have literally seen wrong behaviour in the lab from Japanese people over and over again! So as I said it has nothing to do with race and suspecting that someone never does wrong because they are a specific race is actually also racist! We should not judge someone by their race only by their character!

I got so busy that I forgot to post! After my good cell assay results I made a plan what to do to publish my project. Sadly, all my follow-up experiments went wrong, but somehow it was just funny to me and I just tried to troubleshoot the problems. Some pictures attached of my experiments and the best burger I have eaten in Japan so far!!
