I was at my doctor's for a physical and she noticed my high anxiety. So I told her about my OCD and my job stress She said "hey hopefully you have a supportive team" and I had to inform her that I do not, in fact, have a team of any sort.

I have never been looked at with such incredible pity. Certainly made me feel better about being stressed.

But hey, I like having a job and things are ok most days. My bosses are nice and the work is interesting.

At least I have money to buy stuff for my dog lol.

My aunt brought home a random stray dog when she was little and that dog became my dad's. He had always wanted a dog. He named her Czika. Czika was wildly smart and followed my dad everywhere. Several decades after her death, my dad still talks about her.

Point being, dogs have random origins too. Not all dogs are designer mixes (and I question your sanity if you get one from a breeder) or purebreds (perfectly valid when done with research and care). Plenty of people are shelter dog people or random stray on the side of the road people. This is more about the attitudes people have towards animal ownership than about dog vs cat people.

I remember I had this friend in high school that was mostly masc in most respects of her personality and that’s kind of why we were friends because we were both masc “girls” in the arts except where I didn’t wear makeup, she wore winged eyeliner and no other makeup.

Anyways one day senior year she showed up to school without her winged eyeliner on and said “bro I didn’t do my eyeliner this morning and it gave me like half an hour of freetime” like girl what you’ve been spending half an hour on eyeliner every day for the last four years are you kidding me

I tried makeup in high school and decided sleep was more valuable than spending an hour every morning getting ready. Was it a good decision? Probably. I did need the sleep. Did I miss out on important skill building to be able to apply my own makeup? Very much yes. I can't put on foundation to save my life lmao. A wedding MUA is going to be either VERY happy or VERY frustrated when I end up getting married, since I'm just going to tell her to do whatever lol.

anyway the thing about fanfic is that it's not essentially bad or good; it's essentially amateur. some people are absolutely out there writing award-worthy prose (some fic writers ARE award-winning writers IRL!), but that's not the point. the point is that we're all telling campfire stories. it's a community, and it's a way to spend some more time in the worlds and stories that we love.

It's actually kind of cute and sweet when you can clearly tell that an amateur writer posting their stuff online doesn't really know how something would actually work in real life. Like ok you're probably a kid and it's understandable that you don't really have as much life experience as you've got confidence in the story you want to tell.

You'll get a 15-year-old first person narrating protagonist going like "I've got five older brothers and I'm the only girl so they're really protective of me :)"

like ok I'm guessing you're an only child, and that's sweet that you think that's how it works, but in a set-up like that, being the youngest of six and the only girl, the closest thing that they'd get to being attentive and protective of you would be giving you multiple sessions of intensive experimental exposure therapy to determine once and for all if a human being can develop an immunity to getting waterboarded.

I respectfully disagree.

These experiences do happen, sure, but protective brothers is not a fantasy. I am the youngest of three and the only girl. My brothers are both a decade older than me and 9 times out of 10 they were protective of me when I was younger.

Growing up, my brothers would make sand castles for me, carry me around me on their shoulders, and buy me toys I wanted. They once formed a chair for me with their arms at the beach to carry me from the water to my towel because I was little and didn't want sand on my feet. My eldest brother regularly did pushups with me on his back. My middle brother spent a small fortune at arcades with me.

There were some teasing moments and it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, but the protective brother trope exists for a reason and it's a perfectly valid idea to include in a narrative.

A very important rule to remember when critiquing writing is that your personal experiences are not universal. Making fun of "amateur" writing is very indicative of a writer's maturity. We're all amateurs in some way and it's a very brave thing to share writing, especially as a beginner.

Although I plan to have children in a few years, I feel incredibly blessed to have so much time to explore my interests, passions, and hobbies. I have money that is just mine and the ability to have a career.

I don't have to be a mom, it's not required of me. Being unmarried in my late twenties isn't failure. I get to choose - my purpose, my significant other, what I want to do with my life... many of the women who came before me did not have that. They fought for me to have this - endless opportunity and the space to dream. And that is just so special, isn't it?

I'm so lucky to exist in a place and time that allows me so much freedom of choice that simply didn't exist before.

I identify the most with the woman who has a green velvet ribbon around her neck and keeps being like "DONT untie my neck ribbon or something really bad will happen" and then her husband unties the ribbon and her head falls off. this is extremely real to me. spent my whole life like "please don't do this thing to me or really bad stuff will happen" and everyone around me being like "that sounds fake" and doing it anyway. and then my head fell off!

when i was taking my first year anatomy lab, we’d occasionally find a cadaver where things would branch off or attach in the wrong order, and when we’d ask our prof about it, he’d just shrug and say “they must not have read the book”

When my friend was in med school one of the cadavers donated for them to autopsy didn't have a belly button, just smooth skin.

In the past 10 years of teaching in an anatomy lab, I have seen:

- A donor with a scrotum the size of my head. When we opened it up, we discovered it was a MASSIVE inguinal hernia and a good 1.5 ft of intestine were trapped down there.

- A donor with situs inversus totalis, whose organs were a mirror image of what we normally see (ie their heart pointed right and their liver was on the left, just for starters)

- A donor whose right common carotid artery branched off the aorta waaay over on the left hand side of the body and crossed alllll the way back across the thorax to get where it needed to be.

- A donor with 4 lobes for their right lung (should only be 3). We named the 4th lobe the Lisa Loeb, but all of the students were too young to appreciate our sparkling wit.

- A shocking variety of penile and breast implants. Y'all would not believe the number of different ways science has come up to counteract gravity.

- A couple of cases of ectopic kidneys, where a kidney didn't rise to its typical position just deep to the lowest ribs and instead stayed in the pelvis.

There is probably some other stuff that I am forgetting. Take home point is: the human body is weird and wonderful and you should learn more about yours!

me: “some?” (!!!!!??!?!??!???)

Some was 2, but that’s crazy enough.

Yeah, I don't discover the anatomical weirdness but I've had clients come in with extra ribs, missing ribs, extra vertebra, accessory muscles (that's when you have duplicates - sometimes fine, sometimes not), bones connected where they shouldn't be (spoiler: if your lumbar spine is connected to your hip, it Causes Problems), all sorts of stuff. Bodies are weird!

I don't have wisdom teeth, they simply never showed up. This often confuses dentists and hygienists. I also have two baby teeth where adult teeth never came in. I joke it's payment for not having wisdom teeth lol.

I love my dog. She's the best. Idk how I lived before her or how I'll live after her but I'm so glad I get to exist at the same time as her. I'm so lucky that she's MY dog. I adore her beyond any earthly words.
