which is so good for you! except you don't like the lyrics. you think they're corny.

the producers liked it, they said the lyrics were addictive. but, no matter how you rewrite it, you still feel the same about it.

you sigh, burying your face in your hands

maaaaybe you just need the opinion of somebody outside your team?

that's the majority of songwriters you know.

luckily, the past few days you’ve been hanging out with somebody new.

somebody who LOVES writing and making songs so much, that if he was in my little pony, that's what his cutie mark would represent.

so, you text him.

“okay, let’s see” martin says, already opening up the bag of chips you brought

🐨 “NOBODY??” you

that's a lie.

it's not about nobody, it's about a certain somebody.

🦮 “replaying every song you made??? well shit, why didn’t you just ask him for help, if he makes songs??”

🐨 “BECAUSE its not about anyone”

you hold eye contact with him, as if that makes it any better

it doesn't. it makes it much more awkward instead.

🦮 “is this about me??”

ohhhh my god.

🐨 “NO BRO what the hell”

he leans back slightly, analysing the lyrics infront of him like he's trying to solve a mystery.

does he really think you have a crush on him??

ew.

🦮 “well, i think the lyrics are really good. but this part feels a little out of place, so maybe let’s revise that”

you work on the song together for the next hour or so.

you already feel so much better about the song, he clearly knows his stuff.

but then, you get a message

“shit, it’s so late.” you say after checking your phone. “minji texted me”

🦮 “okay, just look into the verse i told you about”

"I will, I will. thank you sososo much” you say as you lean in to give him a hug.

when you get home, you check your phone just to see a message from martin asking about the meaning of the song, again.

the hangouts with him after this feel weird.

martin is weirdly nicer to you.

he always was nice, but it just felt different.

never rejects you when you ask to go out, even though he's clearly busy

always offers to pay for you, knowing you have much more money in your wallet than him (he literally has trainee debts to pay)

teases you more, but in this soft way, as if he's babying you.

aaand then it clicks.

you’re scheduled to film a tiktok challenge with a new boy band debuting under another sublabel, bighit. it’s not that serious. you’ve done this a million times before.

okay, maybe you did spend about 40 minutes picking an outfit for filming with jimin. but look, that's jimin. he's from bts.

this time it was different because of one particular member.

actually, you don’t even know if he’s in the group, but there's a chance and that's driving you insane.

well, let’s say he is in the group.

you had a crush on him when you were both trainees. TRAINEES.

that was years ago, a lot must've changed, he probably looks very different. you might not even recognize him.

“beep..” you get a message. it's from your manager.

right, the outfit. focus y/n, FOCUS.

while you're still on your phone, you open a poll on instagram asking what to wear; jeans or sweatpants. one of your best friends from another group immediately replies.

you step outside your room to get ready just to find hanni and danielle laying on the floor.

as you approach the third floor you quickly check the elevator's mirror to fix your hair. "do i look okay?" you turn to hanni "you look SO pretty" hanni replies, triggering hyein and danielle to break into singing "noonan neomu yeppeo"

you've got too much going on in your head to join them. you enter the practice room and see 5 very tall boys, including the “3m tall ghost” wonhee told you about.

you also recognise james, he's the one that had a dance battle with hyein.

you analyse each member's features, trying to figure out which one is the guy you're looking for, but there's two guys that kinda resemble him, which confuses the hell out of you. you introduce yourselves, though the boys already knew all of your names anyway. 🦮 "hi im martin and im the leader!"

a 3m tall ghost called martin, okay.

🦅 "hello im james, im the eldest"

🐢 "im juhoon"

there's a pause.

kiiinda awkward.

the guy next to him giggles

you and hyein's heads immediately snap to look at each other at the exact same time.

what makes this even better is that cortis' team is documenting all of this, so you most definitely just got clipped.

hyein, james, hanni and seonghyeon go on to film the "what you want" dance challenge, while you, keonho, and haerin do the dance for your upcoming album's pre-release track.

just as you're about to leave, hyein nudges you and whispers to you to take the chance and do something.

you suggest that you exchange each other's kakaotalks so you can "be there for them when they need help since they're rookies", something that you totally just pulled straight out of your ass just to get seonghyeon’s number, since you never did this with other new groups.

your other members are confused but don't mind.

it's august 10th, just moments before cortis make their pre-debut with their song GO!, and you're currently live on phoning singing your heart out to dominic fike's songs.

earlier that day you texted each cortis member wishing them good luck, just so it doesn't seem like you got their kkts for no reason.

"OKAY GUYS, how about we watch cortis' music video?? the premiere is about to start"

this short listening party immediately blows up on social media.

for the most part you receive a lot of positive reactions for being a "supportive sunbaenim", others claim hybe is paying you to promote their “new nugu group”.

The past few days have been exhausting. Filming anniversary content all day long for your beloved fans, but that is the least you can do for them when they’ve been waiting for a comeback for nearly a year now.

Your best friend, Hyein, is sat next to you, doing something far more productive than you, reading a book. Probably fantasy.

For a second you consider going back to that one book you started reading a few months ago and immediately forgot about.

“..no, too much work.” you think to yourself.

Hyein suddenly slams her book shut and looks over to you.

🐹 “Y/n?” hyein

🐨 “Yeah?” you

🐹 “Remember when you had a crush on that one guy when we were trainees?”

🐨 “Oh. Yeah, Eom Seonghyeon. He was just a hallway crush, though.” you reply, a little thrown off by the sudden question. It’s been years since you’ve last seen him. “I wonder if he’s still a trainee..”

🐹 “You know that we’re filming the dance challenge with BigHit’s new group tomorrow, right?”

🐨 “WHAT? Tomorrow? Already??”

You quickly grab your phone to check the NewJeans group chat, and Hyein’s right. The filming is indeed tomorrow. In fact, your manager has sent several reminders over the past few days.

🐹 “Well, yes y/n.. but my point is — wasn’t Seonghyeon a trainee under BigHit?”

You take a minute to think about that.

Hyein had a dance battle with a former TraineeA member, James, back in like 2021. TraineeA was a group under BigHit. Seonghyeon was in the same section of the audience as James. You put two and two together while Hyein just stares at you and..

🐨 “OH MY GOSH, YES. How did I not clock that before?? How am I supposed to sleep knowing that he COULD be there?”

Hyein chuckles upon hearing your reaction. “Well, do you want to pull an all-nighter?”

There is NO way she just suggested that.

🐨 “HO is you crazy?? What if Seonghyeon really is there and I pull up to the practice room with a puffy face and eye bags. You know how bad I look when my face is puffy.”

🐹 “Didn’t you say he was just a hallway crush?”

..okay, she got you there.

He was a little more than just a hallway crush and both you and Hyein know it. You simply weren’t ever able to get past that awkward eye contact and holding-the-door phase before you were chosen for the debut lineup just a few months after he joined the company. Not that you’d ever complain about that, though. You wouldn’t trade your NewJeans for anything or anyone else.

🐨 “Whatever, I’m going to sleep”, you mumble, giving up.
