grace was brought onto the vatt to create a breeding system for astrophage right? he demanded to be put back on the project and he got to keep the temporary lab back in SF, but the moment he figured out how astrophage reproduced is when he was brought over to the carrier in case things blew up. that's fair, that makes sense.

the problem is stratt knows grace's presence will become largely superfluous the moment blackpanels come into the picture. which is wayyy before grace personally meets reddell, since she implies it all the way back during their meeting with lokken. grace makes his own temporary system with the ship's nuclear reactor and what little astrophage they make IS useful to test Dimitri's spin drives, but once reddell sets up the farm in the Sahara desert grace has virtually no reason to stay on the ship. like his job is done. he's the leading expert in the field, sure, but so are hundreds of biologists working around the world from the comfort of their home labs, he could very well just go back to the US by that point... or that would be the case if stratt didn't keep shoving unrelated work into his hands and dragging him to europe and australia and making the other science department heads run their ideas by him first. she doesn't even have the coma gene excuse!!! dr lamai and the blood test only happen after they nuke Antarctica. from that point on she definitely ramps it up, what with having him straight up test future lab equipment for the hail mary, but i feel like she would've tasked him with teaching dubois and shapiro even if he hadn't been coma resistant.

was musing the other day that I can't think of a lot of Coward Characters who are women. I can think of female characters who are afraid, anxious, and conflict-averse, but not a lot who are really Cowards. my current hypothesis for why this might be is twofold: 1. if a man runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a coward" but if a woman runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a girl;" if you want a Coward Narrative about a woman then you have to put in extra legwork to try and make it not come across like she sucks because of her gender. 2. I think "cowardice" is seen as kind of the worst defect for the masculine gender role in a way it doesn't for the feminine role. comparable sins against femininity are more about being un-loving and un-beautiful, and there are a lot more Narratives about female characters centered around those. basically what I'm saying is that we need more girlcowards and also probably more boycinderellas.

shout out to book!grace, who blasted himself with 29 atmospheres worth of 210c (410f) degrees hot straight ammonia, in the hopes that rocky would survive. who carried rockys whole 168kg (370lbg) down ladders in a make-shift carrier. who turned around for rocky, fully expecting to die of starvation. sigh. who was just a little bit more of a bitch than movie!grace (whats that one quote where hes like "if i had a nickel for every parent i wanted to slap during my career, id have enough to fill a sock and hit them with that instead"). who was purposefully given memory loss, so he wouldnt sabotage the mission (something he threatned many times). who wasnt "friendless", like he was depicted in the movie. i miss you so bad. you were everything.

I know it’s just a popular misconception in this fandom that Grace runs out of food on the way to Erid, where in the book he actually runs out a few months after arriving and it just takes the Eridians a while to make him more that he can actually eat. And honestly idgaf but consider how much more angst potential it is that Grace arrives to Erid healthy and has a chance to explain what happened with Rocky and befriend a bunch of other Eridians, and then starts to decline in health.

Instead of Rocky having to convince Erid to save the life of a random alien they don’t know anything about, it’s suddenly a scramble for Erid to save their new friend (and savior of their planet) and watching him slowly get worse while they struggle to make progress sucks for everyone who has gotten to know him, not just Rocky.

the beauty of early 2000s shows is that they just... stuck to the bit. You watch this show to see a neurodiverent man solve crime with his best friend, you will get that for 8 seasons. We said this show would be about an ex-spy and his employer who built an AI and the people they save. They will do it even when they admit in the show it makes no sense because that's what you signed up for. Leverage commited so much that they got a modern version that still does the same thing instead of being 6 episode seasons about one big con.

I miss "filler" episodes, but they aren't filler because that's what you signed up for! that's why you watch the show! to see them do the thing you started watching the show for!

the thjng about the odyssey movie is hes doing his ruined world hypothesis and that rests so heavily on the repeated cultural value of hospitality. which i liked the repetition, good storytelling setup for when the turn happens, and imo it only felt clunky a couple of times. but if thats how he wants to define a ruined world: we turned our back on our core cultural values. then what is the real world commentary he is making? what does he view as our core values that we have forsaken? and there is a reading that hes doing a self defeating prophecy structure there: were these values ever really so great, if they are hypocritically aligned with xenophobia, warmongering, etc? but like... i dont really think i trust him to actually be doing that. just like in terms of sophistication and politics. but i dont think its a retvrn thing or a puritan thing. so i dont know what to make of it

I don't think the elements he's criticising as such are xenphobia, warmongering, etc. But the attitudes that the film seems to be portraying negatively are initially the desire for glory by way of bloodshed and war. The substitution of any risk or effort you might have needed to excerpt yourself in favour of others sacrificing for your benefit, as we saw with the lottery, and Agamemnon's false spine, and the pretext for the war with Troy.

Plus the predation of the strong on the weak. Or more exactly, the socially elevated over the socially disempowered (unmarried women, poor men, the working class, unwarlike individuals, holy people, etc).

I think there's also an ongoing criticism of the false narratives that are used to bowlderise and obscure the actual horrors taking place.
