I truly loath the conception of Van Gogh purely as this tortured artist whose work only could have existed as a result of his suffering, because no, suffering is not inherent to art, I think suffering if anything counteracts good art, one of his most productive periods of art was during his treatment for his illness, It wasn't his suffering that made his art so good, it was his humanity and the joy and love in his life. I think if he had been treated better, we would have more of his works, not less. and even if it didn't lead to more work, who are we to say that paintings are worth more than that man
