Most insects breathe through many holes in their exoskeleton called spiracles and do not have anything resembling vertebrate lungs. The air is carried directly from their spiracles throughout the body tissues by tiny silver tracheal tubes (kind of like our circulatory system but if the veins and arteries carried air directly from our mouth to our cells). That’s a bit of an oversimplification, but you get the gist.

So when you look inside an insect there are no veins and arteries (because they have an open circulatory system that just kinda sloshes the hemolymph around like a pump circulating water in an aquarium) and where you’d expect to see blood vessels there are instead all these shiny silver tubes. Their anatomy is SO different, it really feels like you’re looking at an alien.

Bees are designed to ride out all kinds of natural disasters in the wild, including forest fires, so while this was probably a stressful event and may have killed some of the hive it isn’t terribly shocking that a good chunk of them survived. Though I am very happy to hear the girls are ok!
