I don’t know why I find this so hard, or why I set this goal for myself year after year. I don’t know how running became the ONLY goal I ever cared about achieving. I don’t know how the label of runner became such an important one to wear.
I am convinced that there must be people who enjoy the sport. I am convinced that enjoyment of running must be achievable after a time.
When does that day come?

I took my 4th run on Friday, but it didn’t go well. I was debating including it, but I did more in that run than I could have when I started. So I think it counts.
I ran 1 mile. Then I got light headed and needed to stop.
Today, I weighed myself again and I’m down another 2.6 lbs from last week and I’ve lost 5 inches overall.
Progress is progress, but I haven’t been able to run since then. I’m adjusting to a new medication, which probably caused my lightheaded feeling on Friday.
Here’s to tomorrow!

Lesson learned - do not wear grey to the gym if you’re planning to go back to work.

In order to achieve my goal of running a half marathon in February I’ve set some small goals for myself.
1. Run 1 mile by May 15
2. Run 2 miles by June 15
3. Run a 5K by July 15
4. Run a 10K by September 15
5. Run 10 miles by November 15
6. Run 13.1 miles by the Princess Half Marathon
In order to reach my first small goal of running 1 mile I’ve been doing the Couch to 5K running program. I’m determined to be persistent - even on those days when I need to repeat a run or maybe go backwards. Last week I finished the third week.
I was anxious to run today, because I knew I would running week 4. (Jog for 3 minutes, walk for 1.5. Jog for 5 minutes. Walk for 2.5 minutes. Repeat) I thought of how long my 3 minute jogs had felt last week. I didn’t know that I could run 5 minutes at all. But I did. I hope I keep surprising myself by what I can do.
A treadmill run today. On my lunch hour at work when I desperately didn’t want to leave. I listed to the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend soundtrack and I thought about how much of running is mental with every step that begged me to stop.
1.86 miles.
213 to 192.6 Officially 20 lbs down.
I Hate Running,
I really hate it. I was on my high school’s lacrosse team and I used to come up with ways to avoid the running portion of practice. It was a mile, one measly mile that everyone seemed to fly through with ease and the thought of that distance was just completely unachievable. Some days I could make it around the track once, and I would pat myself on the back for a job well done. And then I would walk. It was humiliating. And it felt like no matter how hard I tried, I never got any better.
Since high school, I’ve had renewed bursts of interest in running. On the days when the weather would be just right I’d lace up my sneakers and pompously exit the house like an Olympian. Seriously, if someone could have gotten a look at my face right before I started running you would think I was going to run the New York City Marathon.
And then, about four or five minutes later, I’d be done. I’d be taking a stroll around my neighborhood, and when I would come home my sneakers would go away for another few months.
Then I developed an anxiety disorder.
In case you haven’t gotten the point, I hate running. I hate feeling like my legs are going to collapse underneath me. I hate the shortness of breath. I hate the way my ponytail slaps against my neck. I hate the too big shadow of myself that follows me on the pavement. I hate the way I can feel the impact of my sneakers sometimes in my shoulders. I hate how heavy and slow I feel. I hate how utterly boring it is. I hate when I don’t see a puddle and I accidentally get mud on my shoes.
I really hate it, and probably what kept me from doing it for so long is what I snuck into the middle of that last paragraph. I hate how heavy and slow I feel. Because that’s how I feel. I know there are people that describe feeling quick and fast. Never will I ever feel like that. I’m a sack of bricks and I feel it every step of the way.
I’ve been running on a semi-regular basis now for months, and every time I see someone afterwards the first words out of my mouth are, “God, I hate running.” Because ITS THE WORST. And then I get these looks like, “Wait, I don’t understand.”
And running and I can be friends because of the fact that I hate it. When I run I focus all of my energy into thinking about how awful it is. And this is the important part: when I run I don’t have the time or energy to focus on anything else, including being anxious.
I don’t have the time to consider impending doom and destruction. I don’t have the time for the black hole in my chest to open up and for the fear to make me shake. I don’t have the time to think about that because instead I’m thinking, I’m never going to make it up this hill, ever, I will be moving at this glacial pace upward until I die.
Those moments when I’m running have become a moment of freedom from my fears, and because of that I love it a little. Hopefully not enough that I can start loving it and stop hating it, because then we’ll be back to square one. But enough that I ran three miles yesterday and seventeen year old me stared in awe.
A post of my own from years ago and another blog.

If you need to run, and the process is agony for you, at least find a beautiful place to do it in.
125 Runs
There are 42 weeks between now and February 22. In order to get into shape for this half marathon I will be running 3 times a week. This means there are approximately 125 runs between now and then.
I am humbled by this goal. I am scared of this goal. I am anxious that like with so many other goals I will tire, I will falter, and then I will give up. I am worries that in the middle of the race I will fall behind and be picked up and carted to the finish line. I am daunted by the idea of 125 runs.
And then I think, in February I will have gone on 125 runs. Will I consider myself a runner then? How many miles will it be over the next 10 months? If I cross the finish line, what will my heart feel like, knowing what I have done? Will I continue running when the goal of running 13.1 miles has been achieved? Then, will I LOVE running? Will I LOVE being a runner?
I define who I am. I decide what I do. A reputation is something I’ll never fully have control over, but I can control how I live my life.

A New Beginning
This is my shame blog, in case you didn’t know. This is a blog I started awhile ago because I was sure that was the time, that was the year, I was going to make a difference. I was going to be inspired to improve my wellness, lose weight, and get more active. Its my shame blag, of course, because that didn’t happen. What happened is I gave up, got uninspired.
And then I got pregnant.
And then I had my baby.
And then... nothing. No change.
Today, I’m back on a journey. Actually three weeks ago I begin this journey. I joined a 90 day accountability group through Beachbody. I started working on completing the 90 day fix and set small running goals for myself.
Run 1 mile by May 15.
Run 2 miles by June 15.
Run 3 miles by July 15.
Then I decided - but what happened after July 15? Would I be happy to run 3 miles. Hadn’t I always wanted to do more?
So today I made a bigger step. Today I registered for the Disney World Princess Half Marathon next February.
This is a quick post to say - join me. Be here while I prepare for this race over the next 10 months. I hope that this is the place I will come with my struggles, my victories and my plateaus. This is the place I will write about take that slow 2 mile run even when I don’t want to.
I would love to do it with you.
