american blackbirds are icterids but european blackbirds are thrushes but american robins are thrushes but european robins are flycatchers and they are named robin because (checks notes) brits in the 1400s called them "robert" on account of they are just some familiar guy who shows up in your yard. hold on post canceled is that really why they are called that? what the fuck. they did this with jackdaws and magpies too? i can't even be annoyed. how human. "who's that? that's bob." fuck dude it sure is.

moment of unspeakable beauty today when one of my coworkers called another coworker "judas" for not splitting a can of white monster with her, and i got to watch the guy who sits next to me open a new google tab, type in "jeudis," and say quietly to himself "french thursday...?"

Baiae, the submerged city in the Gulf of Naples.
Throughout the 1st century BC, the city of Baiae was a retreat and leisure destination for emperors and wealthy Romans. Tectonic movements between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD caused much of the coastline between Pozzuoli and Cumae, including Baiae, to sink. Today, its remains lie 5 meters below the sea.
Classicists help me, what are the most well known primary sources mentions of Baiae?
I vaguely remember reading about this place in a primary source second or third year of Latin undergrad, but I can’t remember where and it’s driving me crazy.
i’m not sure these are objectively the most well known primary sources on baiae, but the ones that come to mind for me are the various mentions in cicero’s pro caelio, propertius 1.11 (about cynthia in baiae), and martial epigrams 1.62. these are all more about associations of baiae with promiscuity/unfaithfulness than the geology though. im sure pliny the elder talks about baiae in the natural history but it is probably not confined to just one passage and also i haven’t read it.
you can also see all mentions of baiae in ancient sources on topos text!
