A little about this art for anyone interested in my artistic vision.

Obviously, while it functions as such, it's not a straight forward Half-Life fanart. It's meta on several layers. It's about waiting to hear anything about the next game while not fully knowing if this wait is even rational. On the surface it is, right? Last game teased something at its end, so you are a gamer waiting for a teased sequel. You are waiting on a train station. For a train.

That's the most logical place to wait for one, except the train station is empty, clocks aren't ticking and there's no train schedule in sight. Previous train was thirteen years late. You've been here for six more now, and who knows if it's even coming.

The train station itself is the terminal from the start of Half-Life 2, made ethereal and unreal by gray scale colors, fog and noise. I've tried to invoke the stasis-like liminal spaces we see while loading locations in Half-Life: Alyx. It's the new kind of stasis Valve gave us, not a black void, but bright gray unknown. Orange safety line is there to remind us there's still something to hope for, even if it's thin and getting lost in the noise.

What else? The clock. It's a funny thing, with the whole "time" theme of Half-Life. It does some heavy lifting here. The clock in-game doesn't have any hands, it's empty (which was probably also an artistic choice on Valve's part to show how stuck in place an unreal City 17 is). Here the clock is more traditional, mostly to clearly convey the slow and heavy passage of time.

G-Man loves to yap about time. His voice actor posted a tweet that sounded like a teaser and it had a ticking clock sound and a phrase "time is fluid, like music". Everyone and their dog thought he was teasing 2025 announcement. It was a year ago. So here we are, under the train station clock that seems to be stuck.

Hands also form the Lambda symbol, because the passage of time still brings us closer… in theory. It gives us hope. By some insane chance clock hands are also set to the numbers 1, 9 and 7, and it works as a lambda. When we saw those numbers in shapes on the image from G-Man's voice actor's tweet, we thought it was an ARG. It wasn't. So the specific time on the clock on my art reflects that. Seems like the train should have arrived by now, but the tracks are quiet.

I’m always chasing that perfect 2D / 3D fusion and if I’m working digitally, to lean into making my work look unabashedly digital rather than try to imitate my traditional painting style. I put 0 effort into last years so making up for it this year!!!
