The Perfect Taco: An Interview With GYMSHORTS
GYMSHORTS. Guitars pulsing and radiating. Soaking wet melodies that make you wanna throw your limbs. Saturday morning cartoons. Surfinā on a vocal cord tsunami. Splashinā around on the cymbals. A pizza delivery of golden riffs. Slowinā it down while breakinā it down. Bursting out of your childhood radio. Church Sucks - Fuck Rules!!! And with that, we present to you an interview with Rhode Islandās best.Ā
What are your astrological signs?
Trevor:Ā Capricorn. Weāre both goats.
Devin:Ā Iām Cancer, July 3.
Sarah:Ā Heās going on 25, ladies.
Devin:Ā Iām a great lover.
What sign is Mike (drummer)?
Trevor:Ā Letās just say heās a Taurusā¦no wait, he might be a Crapricorn too.
Sarah:Ā Heās an upside down cross.
Devin:Ā His birthday is December 2, so heās a Sagittarius.
Whatās the most embarrassing/ridiculous trend you followed while growing up?
Devin:Ā Girl pants before they were skinny jeans. I was wearing flared out low rise girl jeans, and a leather jacket. I used to wear a wicked tight ball chain necklace when I was like 9. And I got my ears pierced too at the same time. I have a picture of myself as a kid with a weird mullet thing, a ball chain necklace and an earring. It was great.
Trevor:Ā Bowl cuts. That wasnāt by choice though. My mom just gave it to me.
Sarah:Ā I got a lot of shit for wearing overalls. But Iām going to stand behind that decision.
Devin:Ā Did you used to wear those little stretchy black necklaces? Mary-Kate and Ashley wore them back in the dayā¦jelly necklaces. They were like, a tattoo almost. And they had arm bands. You definitely wore those.
Sarah:Ā YOU definitely wore those. You brought them up!
What would a Gymshorts space tour be like?
Devin:Ā Weād go straight to Uranus and do the whole fuckinā thing.
Sarah:Ā When I was little I had a space project where I had to make all the planets. I made the whole solar system out of candy. There was some extra candy leftover, and my dad popped one in his mouth. I was like, āDad! You ate Uranus!ā He started dying laughing and I didnāt know why. Then he said, āYour anus is another word for your ass!ā
If you could build the perfect taco, what would be inside?
Devin (guitar):Ā The perfect taco would have a joint on top of it that you can take off and smoke before you eat it, first of all, and itād probably have pulled pork, corn salsa, definitely guacamole and sour cream. Chorizo, pico de gallo, and some sour cream. Smoked gouda cheese too.
Sarah (vocals & guitar):Ā Cheese, lettuce, guacamole, pico, rice and beansā¦thatās a burrito, at this point.
Trevor (bass):Ā It could be a burrito inside a taco.
Are you guys Atlantic/East Coast people for life?Ā
Trevor:Ā Iām not gonna swear allegiance to any geographic location.
Can you tell us the story of how Gymshorts became a band?
Sarah:Ā Yes we can, haha.
Devin:Ā I randomly met Sarah at a party and I was there with a guy from my band called The Male Perverts; I needed a bass player for a show the next week, so we basically just asked everyone at the party, and Sarah said, āYeah!! Iāll play bass!!!ā
Sarah:Ā I didnāt play bass. I was drunk as shit. So I was like, āSuurrree!ā
Devin:Ā So I said, āLetās practice tomorrow!ā And it was totally fine, it turned out great. After the show, we were all shitfaced, and Sarah said, āWE GOTTA START A BAND CALLED GYMSHORTS!ā and I was like, āBAAAHHH LETāS DO IT!ā So we wrote all these songs together and about a year later, we picked up Trevor and Mike, and we just bee lined it to playing a fucking ton of shows. It was this weird thing. I canāt believe how easily we came into contact with each other and started doing all this crazy shit.
Sarah:Ā I had written a lot of songs in my head as a joke, and Devin was the first person to not say, āFuck no! Iām not playing thoseā. Originally, we wanted to tour elementary schools and be a punk rock band for kids and then it sort of evolved from there.
Are you guys associated with Burger Records at all?
Sarah:Ā We have a tape out on Wiener Records, which is a subsidiary of Burger.
Devin:Ā Yeah, we opened for a lot of Burger bands like White Mystery, Habibi, Tomorrowās Tulips, and Mr. Elevator & The Brain Hotel. Weāre playing withĀ Cherry Glazerr on July 31st at the Mercury Lounge.Ā
Have you ever seen a ghost?
Sarah:Ā I donāt think so, but now itās making me think. I mean, I probably wouldnāt know since theyāre invisible.
Devin:Ā I saw someone do a ghost⦠with smoke. Itās kind of like a French inhale.
Sarah:Ā Hahaha, āDo a ghost.ā āIām totally having sex right now, I swear!ā
