Summary: You got kidnapped by members of an aggressive incel group, and thought that this was how you were going to die. But a group of the Chicago PD are able to save you; now you just need to help them find the group that did this. Only one problem: You can’t talk.

Warnings: Graphic details of beatings and abuse, mentions of blood, violence against women, and swears.

A/N: So this was based off an idea by an anonymous sender asking for more mouse imagines. And since I am on a break from work (i’m okay, I just work at an elementary school and its summer vacation lol) I thought I would get some writing done :) I hope you all enjoy, and if anyone else has ideas for imagines you want me to write, send me a message!

I’m going to die.

You still remember the moment where you knew something was wrong when you were walking home from your job at the tech firm. It was late, not crazy late, but late enough where the street lights started to flicker on. The clicking of your footsteps soon stepped in sync with someone else’s, and before you could pull out your phone or your mace, a bag was thrown over your head and with a hard hit with something, you were out.

Now here you were, who knows how many days have passed, in a jail cell of a room, trying to anticipate when your kidnappers would come back for another round of smacking you around with the assorted weapons at their disposal. This group has been trying to extract some info about a set of code you had recently written to help one of the biggest banks in Chicago with their security; you assumed to rob it. You’ve also heard murmurings from outside your door about how they needed the money, for what though you didn’t know. 

While curled up in a corner, trying to prepare yourself for the inevitable; that you were not going to make it out, you were shocked by a big BANG that shook the walls that surrounded you. You could here shouting, many voices echoing around as the scuttering of footsteps getting closer and closer to where you were being kept. You tried to push yourself further into the corner, and as the door swung open your hid your head in your lap with your arms over your head for protection. 

“Hello?”

Slowly, you raised you head and squinted as a flash of light caught your eyes. In front of you was three people; two men and a woman. They had guns in their hands and bulletproof vests labeled with POLICE.

“Ma’am? Ma’am are you okay?” The taller man asked, his brown hair slicked back and his blue eyes looking at you with concern. With a shaky nod, the woman cop slowly comes over to you and kneels down.

“Are you Y/F/N Y/L/N?” Another nod, and the woman cop looks to her friends then back at you, offering her hand. “I’m Detective Lindsay, and we’re here to get you home.”

A flood of tears well up in your eyes and you reach out and grab her hand, her grip firm and comforting as she helps you up and out of your nightmare.

Hours have passed, and Detectives Lindsay and Halstead are standing outside a hospital room where you were sleeping off the meds the doctors had given you. Erin and Jay watch you through the window as the doctor walked over to them, clipboard and your chart at hand. “Detectives?”

“Yes.” Erin said, straightening up. “How is she?”

“Y/N is sedated now, but looks like she might be here for a couple days. With contusions on her legs, two broken ribs and a concussion, we would want to keep an eye on her before sending her home. We also had to administer a rape kit after seeing the bruising on her legs.”

“These guys really worked her over.” Jay murmurs, looking at you again before turning back to his partner.

“When she wakes up, please give us a call. We need to ask her some questions about the people that kidnapped her.” Erin hands the doctor her card and is about to turn and walk away when the doctor’s voice makes the cops’ stop.

“That might be an issue.” Erin and Jay turn back around and walk back to the doctor, looks of confusion present on their faces. “When she got to the hospital before being sedated, Y/N stopped answering any and all questions presented to her.”

“Like she’s refusing to talk? Why would she do that?” Jay asked.

The doctor shook their head and pulled their clipboard to their chest, “The head of psych, Dr. Daniel Charles, believes that Y/N has developed Psychogenic Mutism. Basically because of the trauma Y/N has endured, her mind has shut off that part of her brain that allows her to communicate. It’s not that she is choosing to not speak; it is that she feels physically unable to.” They explained, glancing over in your direction as she progressed.

“How long will that last?”

“It could be days, weeks, or it could go on for years. This type of trauma response is very unpredictable because we are not just dealing with the health of the patient. We are dealing with their mental health and it they feel safe and secure enough that their mutism can subside.”

Erin looked over at you again and sighed, hating that not only had the people responsible hurt you and taken away your feeling of safety, they also somehow took away your voice.

Over the next few days, it was explained to you that an investigation was open on your kidnapping and subsequent abuse. A Dr. Charles also visited frequently about what he called your “mutism”. He ended up giving you a whiteboard and marker so you could write, but whenever he brought up your attack, it was like your brain would shut down. The first time it happened, you woke up to Dr. Charles standing over you, telling you that you had a panic attack and passed out. After that, Dr. Charles and others were very careful what to bring up around you.

Eventually, you were released from the hospital and given your own police protection detail just incase those guys tried to take you again. The Detectives that found you, mainly Detective Lindsay, would visit and say how you were, and if you had thought of anything useful to help the investigation, but it was no use. One one day, you were asked to come to 21st District to look at some pictures of possible perps, and you were dreading it. It was the first time you had left the house since being released from the hospital and you had made your apartment your safety bubble; essentially everything in the bubble was good, and everything outside was dangerous. But some righteous part of you wanted to see the people responsible for your attack put to justice, so you got into the police cruiser of one of your protection detail, and made your way to the 21st.

Inside the district, you were met with a sturdy-looking older woman behind the desk of the main floor. She looked like the one in charge, her eyes never wavering even when you walked over to her. The officers with you, you think their names were Burgess and Roman, explained who you were, and you were buzzed up to the upper level which was explained to you that was where the Intelligence Unit was. After arriving to the office space, officers Burgess and Roman were called over their walkies, the sudden noise making you jump. 

Officer Roman moved to answer the call as Burgess moved closer to you, “Sorry. It looks like we need to go. Lucky though you are in the safest place for you to be right now.” she said with a reassuring smile. “There is a civilian who works for the unit; he is their tech expert and used to work with Detective Halstead when they were Rangers. We’ll get him to come up and stay with you until the unit comes back.”

You nodded as Burgess and Roman walked down the stairs back down to the main flor of the district, leaving you alone for what feels like the first time in weeks. You took a seat at one of the desks, and fiddled with your hands as the silence around you started to press down on you.

Suddenly the room felt like it was moving, a swaying motion that didn’t bring you any comfort. Your lungs felt like they couldn’t get enough breath as you tried to get more air into them, and slowly your brain realized that you were hyperventilating. You were so concerned with trying to breathe that you didn’t hear someone enter the space you were in or how they moved closer to you quickly. It wasn’t until there was a hand falling on your shoulder that made you jump out of your seat and look up.

In front of you was a man with combed back brown hair and striking blue eyes, wearing a spotted black-and-white button-up shirt and jeans. The look he was giving you was full of concern, but not edging on pity which was mostly what you’ve seen since your attack. It took a second to realize that his mouth was moving and words were leaving his lips.

“-ear me? Hey, can you hear me? You need to breathe, okay? Match my breathing.” He said, his tone calming and rumbling like a faraway thunderstorm. Slowly, you were able to take deeper and deeper breaths, your heart slowing down until the panic attack subsided. Tears started to drift into your vision as a wave of exhaustion encompassed you all the way to your bones. “Its okay, its always a bit overwhelming after an attack like that.”

You nodded as you wiped away your tears to try and regain some composure, but the man didn’t seem bothered by the tears. He gave you a small smile and patted your lap before getting up and heading to the side kitchen. There was noise of ceramic clanking together and the sound of water, and a couple of minutes later he came back with a cup of tea. “Tea really helps. I have a cup after I have my panic attacks and its a nice calming drink to help ground me.” He explained, handing over the cup.

You sip from the cup, the smell of flowers of some kind and the taste of some kind of sweetener warmed your chest and let a small smile appear on your face. The man smiled at your calm exterior before pulling over a chair and sitting next to you, “Officer Burgess explained they were watching over you but had to leave, I’ve been helping the unit on your case so I know you can’t speak. That’s okay though. I’m Greg, by the way. Greg Gerwitz, but everyone calls me Mouse.”

You look over with a confused look on your face, which made Mouse laugh, “Its a very long story, trust me you don’t want to hear it.” You smiled again, a little bigger than before, and you two spent the next few minutes in conversation. Well, with Mouse talking and you listening, but it was the closest to a normal conversation you’ve had in weeks. 

“-and then Jay, Detective Halstead, started running around like crazy, shucking off his shirt in the barracks looking for the spider.” Mouse said, laughing at the memory of Jay freaking out because of a spider. You were smiling and before you could even notice, your mouth was moving.

“What happened after that?”

Mouse turned to you in shock, and you stared back wide eyed as your hand came up to your mouth. “Oh my god.”

“Did...Did you just speak?” Mouse asked, his full attention now on your next move. You paused, thinking that you had both imagined that, but then went to try to speak again. 

“H-Hi.”

Mouse’s shocked expression turned into a smile, “Hi.”

Just as the two of you were in the middle of a moment, the gate leading to the bullpen downstairs clanged shut with the follow up sound of multiple footsteps coming up the stairs. Mouse and you both turned to see Detective Lindsay, Detective Halstead and a few others walking into the room. 

“Y/N, sorry for making you wait. I hope our tech expert Greg wasn’t that bad of company.” Jay said jokingly, giving Mouse a smirk. Before Mouse could open his mouth to reply, you stood up.

“N-No, he was great company.” You said as you watched Detective Lindsay and Halstead’s jaws drop at the sound of your voice. “He even helped me find my voice.”

“So you can talk now.” A voice said as an older man walked out to the front of the group. Clearly he was the Sargent Voight Mouse had mentioned to you earlier, the head of the Intelligence Unit. “Does that mean you’ll be able to help us with your case?”

You looked back to Mouse who gave you a reassuring smile, then turned back to the unit, “I’ll tell you everything.”

A/N: This is the first one-shot I post here :) It's inspired by the 5 seconds of summer song "Ghost of you" so I recommend you hear it before reading this! Enjoy!

Here I am waking up

Still can't sleep on your side

Y/N woke up, as tired as always and sat down on bed. Those two weeks without her husband had felt like a lifetime. Maybe it had been one, a new life, a life where Brian was gone. She had seen a thousand shows and movies where someone became a widow, and now she could hear that Grey’s Anatomy line on repeat in her head, about Derek’s mother not being able to sleep on her late husband’s side of the bed. As she looked over her shoulder, she realized his side of the bed remained untouched from that last morning, in which they had woken up, rearranged the bedsheets, pillows and blankets, had breakfast together, kissed goodbye and left for work. And never met again.

There's your coffee cup

As she got to the kitchen, got the coffee maker working and opened the cabinet to grab her coffee cup, she saw his, with the Blackhawks logo on it, right next to hers, and the tears pooled once again in the eyes Otis had loved so much. Silently, she thanked him for doing the dishes instead of just leaving them on the sink for her to wash when she got back home as they usually did, since she wouldn't have been able to wash his cup. Oh, how he loved that cup.

“If anything should happen to me, I’ll visit you in your dreams. I promise. But there’s no need to worry about that now, babe. We’re gonna have kids and grow old together, you know? Just like we said” he whispered to her, his hand resting in her lower belly lovingly, and Y/N got on her side, a beautiful smile on her lips as she got lost in his brown eyes “Yeah? How many?” “Two boys and a girl. I’m confident I’ll be just fine, but I wouldn’t like you to be alone if one day I don’t make it back home”

Except that two whole weeks had gone by and she never dreamt, of anything. Not even once. And she ended up alone. They had dated four years, only for him to die two weeks after their wedding.

She drank her coffee, glancing at the sugar pot that rested on the counter, close to the coffee maker. He always took his coffee with one spoonful of sugar, while she took it as bitter as possible. Otis always joked about how she was so sweet and nice while her coffee was so bitter. “It’s almost ironic, you know? You are one of the sweetest people on earth, and yet you have your coffee with no sugar and very little milk” he had grinned one day, the first morning they spent together.

After washing the cup and leaving it next to Otis’s, she went to their bedroom to grab her gun and badge and head to the 21st district for the first time since she got that damn call from chief Boden.

Voight and Platt both decided it would be best if she stayed on desk duty for a while, at least until she got completely cleared by a therapist that she was good to be back on the streets. She didn’t complain, not finding that much energy on herself. It was thankfully a quiet day, so her mind was allowed to be a bit all over the place.

She remembered, with her very first smile in weeks, how on their fifth date they had dinner at his place one night he could kick Cruz and Brett out, and after dinner, he connected his phone to the speaker to play Taylor Swift’s album Red, the one she had told him was her favorite. So they danced to All too well as if the world was ending, and his eyes had never shine so brightly as he looked at her, spinning around, laughing and giggling.

Ever since then, dancing became their thing. They’d dance whenever they had the chance. And after they moved in together, they’d dance every night he’d spend at home. They had a whole playlist for their dancing moments, though they would dance to any song, regardless of the rhythm.

Surprisingly, that last day of license she had, she found herself dancing on her own to All too well, the first time she had danced alone to that song in four years, and even though it broke her heart once again, she found a little peace and the feeling that he hadn’t left her for real. She ended up leaning onto the door frame, remembering how they’d dance to that song whenever they heard it, and almost seeing their ghosts laughing with their arms around each other.

As she got to their apartment that terrible day, with Hailey and Kim supporting her, she had to find some kind of strength to get to their room, her room now, since it would no longer be shared with Otis. Whatever strength she had found, it left her as soon as she got to the door, his Zepplin shirt he used as a pajama resting on top of a pillow. He’d say it helped him forget anything terrible he had seen during his shift, and forget the terrible smells he had felt.

She had broken down in tears and fell to her knees, sobbing loudly. Her friends got to her and wrapped their arms around the now widow police officer. In her mind, she was still there, crying. She couldn’t remember getting up or stop crying, and wondered if her soul was still in that same position. It sure felt like that.

A tiny smile showed up on her lips as she remembered her mom’s words when they told her they had gotten engaged. Mrs Y/LN had said it had nothing to do with Otis, and everything to do with Y/N’s stupidity. She was way too young to know what real love felt like, Otis was her second boyfriend after all, if we consider her high school three weeks relationship a boyfriend. No. There was no way she was engaged. She was dumb when it came to love, and she was so young.

They had proved her wrong.

As she got home that afternoon, she took a shower and dressed in his Zepplin shirt, with a sad smile. He had bought it really cheap like a decade ago and failed to realize it said Zepplin instead of Zepellin. It became a silly and loving joke between the two of them. She connected her phone to his speaker and All too well started playing once again, tears pooling in her eyes as she heard the lyrics, since she too, remembered everything all too well.

She couldn’t dance like she did with him, so why bother? Otis was gone, and he had taken Y/N’s heart with him.

"Oh no, what have we done now?" Cruz asked and you laughed 

"Heard you lot broke into an unmarked police car" You joked as Cruz's face fell "Just kidding any chance you can get everyone in the common room?"

"Yeah Severide and Casey are in their quarters" You nodded to Jay before walking through to the bunk room and knocked on Kelly's door before poking your head in

"Hey sorry to intrude Halstead and I need to speak to you about you lot breaking into an unmarked police car" Kelly furrowed his brows and you tapped your head "Shit wrong firehouse erm it's about a lethal batch of drugs"

"I'll be there in 2 minutes," Kelly said and you smiled slightly

"You have till I tell Casey" You walked to Casey's quarters and poked your head in "Hey Halstead and I need to talk you lot about a lethal batch of drugs in the common room"

"Let me dot my I's and cross my t's" You laughed before walking back to Kelly's quarters and poked your head in

"Sorry again but Kelly this can't wait there's 15 dead teenagers and a lot more to come"

"Right there" You walked out and joined Jay. He furrowed his brows

"Casey is dotting his I's and crossing his t's and I got right there from Kelly" Casey walked in with Kelly and an older couple behind him. You nodded to Jay who nodded to you

"Ok I know you are only on shift for another hour but there's a lethal batch of heroin going about at the moment we have 15 dead teenagers as it is not responding to Narcan. If you get a call out please phone Halstead, me or anyone else in intelligence" You started

"We're also a little jumpy cause these 15 dead teenagers also came from that explosion this morning so if you get a call for an explosion call us" Jay finished and you nodded

"Thanks, guys and you did break into an unmarked police car this last night on that 10 car pileup. No charges filed" You stated turning around and walking out.

"I'll catch up with you Jay" You turned back around and walked to Kelly's quarters "Hey Kelly" You stopped him 

"Go on I'll find yous"

"I'm sorry about how I acted we're just pissed these teenagers weren't even 15 yet" He pulled you into a hug

"Don't worry about it my mom and dad are in town come on through"

"I would love to but I have to go solve these murder's, homicides whatever you want to call them"

"Be safe it's only 7 in the morning" He said kissing you

"You too and if you hear anything about an explosion seriously call me and don't do anything stupid"

"Wouldn't plan on it now go" You walked out and joined Jay in the car.

It must have been around 11 pm once intelligence had finished solving the case and finished the paperwork. Voight had sent you all home so you texted your boyfriend who said he was at home with some cold beers which sounded amazing along with a nice warm bath and a massage. You finally got home and walked into the apartment that you shared with your boyfriend Kelly. You walked inside and threw yourself down on the couch

"Day that hard?" Kelly asked and you nodded

"I mean who wants to make a lethal batch of heroin just to sell to a bunch of teenagers around 14 years old and then send them to a party just to make the building explode" Kelly handed you a beer and you took a long sip of it

"You caught the guy though" You nodded and stood up

"I need to put my gun in the safe" 

"Erm my mom is in our bedroom at the moment" You furrowed your brows

"Hold on she's just getting changed she's sleeping on the couch while my dad's sleeping in the guest bedroom" You nodded and placed your gun and badge on the coffee table before sitting down again

"You told me there were no guns in the house" A female voice came from behind you and you turned around

"Mom there wasn't when you asked but Y/N's a cop and you know what cops carry? Guns"

"I don't want it near me" You grabbed your gun and holster and placed them back on your hip and glared at Kelly who mouthed a sorry.

"I'm gonna go to Molly's let yous figure this out"

"No, you're going nowhere until we sort this out"

"Kelly all I want is to sleep away this pain"

"Maybe you should listen to him," His mother said and you raised an eyebrow

"You know what Jay has a spare bedroom. I've just lost 18 teenagers, been punched around 5 times as well as shot in the chest just today I don't need to come home to a place where I can't be free"

"You were shot in the chest?" You nodded slowly

"Turns out bad drug dealers don't like cops but I had my vest on and I just have a nice bruise"

"Go to bed grab some painkillers and I'll come rub your stuff on in a minute" You grabbed your gun and walked into the bedroom before placing your gun and badge in your safe. You got changed into a pair of shorts and one of Kelly's shirts and lay down on the bed. You heard shouting from the living room

"You know that she's a cop and we don't get along with them" A man that wasn't your boyfriend shouted

"Pops we're not back in the 19 hundred cops and firefighters work along well together" Kelly shouted

"You know I don't like guns Kelly and I can't be in a house with one" You stood up and walked out the bedroom leaning against the doorframe

"You know what I'm a detective in the CPD's intelligence unit under Hank Voight you two shouting doesn't scare me it just pisses me off. I've spent the better part of my week being shot at, punched, stabbed at, chasing around suspects but I have never in my 4 years of being a detective had to come home to a household where people don't appreciate what I do" You started off by shouting then calmed down to a normal voice. You took a deep breath before continuing "You might be Kelly's parents but this is also my home I pay half the rent so if you don't appreciate what I do you can leave if not and you're still arguing about this in about an hour I can arrest you for disturbing the peace" You said walking back into the bedroom and lay back down.

"Hey I'm sorry you had to raise your voice or even come out," Kelly said massaging your shoulders 

"It's ok but Kelly I mean it I don't want to come home to a home where people don't appreciate what I do" 

"I know baby and I can't say sorry for my parents but I can say sorry from me" You turned around and kissed him deeply
