F 4: Fever, Hyde

A Headcanon:

Hyde hates getting sick. His mother took him to the pediatrician when he was a baby and a little older. But once he hit the age of four, she told Bud to take care of him. Bud called his brother, Chet, to take Hyde to the doctor -- which Chet always did until Bud abandoned the family.

When sober, Edna told Hyde to "suck it up" whenever he got a fever. Hyde took his mom's "hangover" aspirin. But if he was really sick, he'd fight through the fatigue and pain to get to the Formans' house.

Kitty, a nurse and loving mother, made sure Hyde got the proper care -- going an extra three miles when Edna was drunk. Hyde stayed with the Formans, sometimes a week or two (if he got the flu), until he was better.

In middle school (or junior high), Hyde began to try to conceal when he was sick. Eric and Donna saw through it, though, and ratted him out to Mrs. Forman.

During Hyde's freshman year of high school, Kitty confronted Edna at lunch in the cafeteria about Hyde's bout of strep throat. It did not go well, and Kitty reported Edna to children's services.

Unfortunately, Edna had been reported several times and had an in with a corrupt social worker (she slept with him). So home visits resulted in nothing.

Once Hyde moved in with the Formans, his medical needs were always taken care of, despite that he continued to try to hide them. "A mother knows," Mrs. Forman told him when he became flustered. "Especially one with a nursing degree."

Jackie, as his girlfriend, soon learned the signs of Hyde's fever. Mostly, he told her he wasn't in the mood to make out -- which was completely out of the ordinary. He didn't want to risk her getting sick.

To get him to admit the truth, she offered to cuddle with him on the basement sofa while he watched Three's Company and wouldn't judge him for gawking at Chrissy's jiggling jugs.

"Jiggling jugs?" Hyde said in his room.

"I learned about alliteration in English class this week. Anyway, let's go!"

"I'm gonna stay in bed."

Jackie sat on his cot. "I'll stay with you."

Hyde groaned. "I just wanna be left alone, okay?"

"Because ... ?"

"Do I gotta have a reason?"

"Steven -- " Jackie touched his shoulder -- "your girlfriend is offering to stay in your bed."

"Fine. My temp's a little high. That's all "

Jackie felt his forehead. "How high?"

"Hundred."

"Oh, God, you're sick!" She gasped. "Three months ago, when you refused to make out with me for four days -- you were sick, then, too! What's wrong with you?"

He shrugged and rolled onto his side. "I'm sick."

I did this one earlier so I will describe a different WIP:

I am most productive in my writing when I have a main story I'm working on drafting, and then a budding-idea back-burner story I'm kind of outlining/planning/developing at the same time. My goal for myself (because it's more of a goal than a rule; this is my hobby) is to sit down and write at least one scene from my WIP per day. A lot of times, I end up writing more than that once I've gotten into a groove. Sometimes it's like pulling teeth, and I have an easier time working on my back-burner piece.

I also freely skip through my outline and work on the scenes I want to write first, then go back and fill in the rest. With my current story, I am most motivated to write the Eric/Donna scenes (lol shocker) so I skip ahead and do those and just leave a brief overview of what goes into the other parts. I will go back and fill those in later.

1986. Twenty-Five.

"Welcome to the club."

"I don't want to be part of your stupid club." Jackie glares at Eric, briefly setting her eyes on the cake before dramatically turning to her husband. For youthful affirmation, of course. "I'm so freaking old! Steven, do you see any wrinkles?"

Hyde groans, holding a dark-haired little one firmly in his arms. "No."

The little one innocently smiles, if only for a moment, her big blue eyes lighting up the room. She spies, with her little eyes, a tiny little redhead in her aunt's arms, and begins to fuss and squirm.

Hyde reluctantly releases his ironclad grip, and sets Becca down next to her best friend, Kate. In their high chairs, perched side by side, they happily squeal at each other. Pressing their grubby little hands on each other's faces, and Kate sets her eyes on the cake.

"Took you long enough." Jackie crassly shoots the breeze, with a dramatic sigh. "Steven can change Becca's diaper in less than sixty seconds."

Hyde loudly guffaws. "You won't change a diaper."

"If you're here, I won't." She points to her small breasts, rolling her eyes. "I feed her."

In turn, Donna reluctantly speaks up, as the tepid human dictionary. "She's almost ten months old. I think it's time to start weaning..."

The leader of the band loudly clears his throat, camera in hand. He has already snapped two or three pictures of Kate and Becca, as well as a scowling Jackie glaring at her pink unicorn cake. A representation of their increasingly fleeting youth.

But at least the band hasn't broken up, like The Beatles, scattering to the wind. Instead, the natural union of Yoko and Lennon has only made the band even stronger.

Hyde plops next to his wrinkleless wife, plopping a kiss on her waiting cheek, and Eric sings his obligatory tune. "I think we should sing happy birthday and get down to business, shouldn't we?"

Jackie loudly scoffs. "You just want cake, you dork."

Eric sighs, reluctantly admitting defeat. "...Yes, I do."

So I thought if two questions! 1) If you could only watch one episode of T7S for the rest of your life, which episode would it be and why? 2) What has been your favorite episode of T7S to adapt to the comics and why?

Oh, goodness, those are good (and tough) questions. *lol*

1. I have to go with “Kelso’s Serenade” (2x21). This is the ep that started me shipping Jackie/Hyde, showed Jackie’s vulnerability and Hyde’s compassion (and, though probably not the intent of the writers, added the fact personality counts a lot for whom Hyde is attracted to; physical appearance/”hotness” isn’t enough for him). It’s also quite funny, with Kelso’s “Song for Jackie”.

2. Picking one is difficult, partly because it’s a case of, “Which group of eps am I working on now?” For an episode I adapted many years ago, I really enjoyed writing and drawing “Jackie Bags Hyde” (3x08). I started to expand Jackie and Hyde’s storyline in earnest, and I had fun with making literal Donna’s line, “The ass doesn’t fall far from the ass tree!” and Fez and Kelso’s reactions to that tree.

For a more recent episode, I’m happy with the changes I made to “5:15″ (6x21), which is currently being posted here. Jackie and Hyde get a fun storyline instead of being separated, which allows Laurie and Fez to go to Mitch’s brother’s wedding as a couple.

Except for Eric and Donna’s storyline on the show’s version of the episode, I find “5:15″ lacking in depth and character development. It’s not as bad as “Young Man Blues” (6x09), which is total filler. But “5:15″ is mostly wasted space, imo. 

Question For You:

If you could change one element of the show, which would it be (other than season 8)? Examples: keeping the ‘70s socioeconomics an integral part of the show, giving the Formans more than the Pinciottis as neighbors, Kitty not becoming an alcoholic in seasons 5-7, etc.

Do you have any headcanons about Red and Kitty watching/babysitting Betsy?

Yes, I do! Thanks you so much for asking. Here are just afew of them:

✻ Kelso often feels that Betsy is safer being left with Redand Kitty than with his parents; it’s not so much because he doesn’ttrust his parents with Betsy but rather doesn’t trust his brothers around Betsyor trust that his parents will make sure his siblings leave Betsy alone. Thisis why Red and Kitty are his go to babysitter when he, Brooke, and Betsyvisit Point Place.

✻ Whenever Kelso brings Betsy over to the Forman house, heusually goes straight to the basement as he’s always done. It’s a habit andallows for his friends to see his daughter, but after a few minutes into theirvisit Kitty always manages to find them down there and is more than willing totake Betsy off Kelso’s hands for a little bit, letting him spend some time withhis buddies and giving her someone to fuss over.

✻ One of Betsy’s favorite things to do at The Forman house isread her latest favorite book to Red. He lets her sit with him in his armchairwith her on his lap, holding the book, and flipping the pages as she tells him thestory printed on the pages. This started when she was about three years old,she hadn’t really been reading the book but had instead memorized the story,after having her parents read it to her so much, she could tell it back to Red.

✻ Red claims that out of the whole Kelso Family, Betsy is hisfavorite.

✻ When Betsy was younger she called Red and Kitty ‘Mr. Red’and ‘Mrs. Kitty’ but as the rest of the gang started having kids and those kids calledKitty and Red ‘Grandma and Grandpa,’ Betsy fell into the habit too. No oneevery felt the need to correct her, not Red or Kitty nor her parents, or evenany of the other kids because Red and Kitty were just as much Betsy’sgrandparents as they were the other kids.

✻ The first time that Red and Kitty babysat Little Betsy Kelsofor an entire weekend, they were given a taste of what it was like to have agrandchild. They both enjoyed it so much that soon after that weekend, bothKitty and Red began to bring up the topic of grandkids with their own kids.Asking when they could expect them, how many they should plan for, and Kittyeven gave them helpful tips on getting pregnant.

Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day 2017

Okay, so Fanfictions Writers Appreciation Day was yesterday, august 22, but I still want to say a few words to my favorite t70s writers that are on tumblr:

I wouldn’t be writing anything for the fandom if it wasn’t for how inspiring and encoraguing @those70scomics‘s writing is to me. Her stories mean so much to me as a fan, because they were the first ones I truly liked and connected with.

Her characterization thought me a lot and made me feel millions of things with her perfectly planned and played out plots, all her stories are incredible and everyone should read them at least once.

And thanks to her, I found the courage to write ‘Heart Like Yours’, a story I thought may be too unusual or weird for the fandom. It was thanks to her ‘Hyde’s Long Way Home’ that I decided I could give it a try.

But it was thanks to @that70sshowgoldencouple‘s love and support that I not only finished but posted it, with her helping me with beta and inspiration thanks to her amazing story, ‘If You Ever Did Believe’, that shared an important aspect with mine. There’s no day I don’t think about this and m grateful for it.

Her stories have make me happy in times where I would ha ended up crying at the end of the day. She’s a great author and her stories means a lot to many people, me included.

I can’t not mention @70s-show-diary, whose stories I have been only introduced to, but I think are amazing. May inspiration never goes away for her and for every writer I’m mentioning here and not.
