Moriarty (me when i think at 10 pm)
Just an FYI, this post is for fun and to be taken with a grain of salt, i am merely reaching here, just wanted to share what I think. Also, it's 10 pm so my head's everywhere.
I was trying to search for a title for one of the chapters for my fic and as I was looking, i randomly thought of latin words. I remembered memento mori and was like 'ooo right, remember' so i checked the meaning of mori which means 'to die' and i was like sure, ok. then i saw the word morior and i thought 'hey, that sounded close to-' then i saw moriar.
morior/moriar - I (shall) die
Memento mori is a phrase, that we should remember that we all die someday. Mori meaning to die and moriar/morior is a reference to the first person who will die/ is dying. Moriar is deponent verb in Latin and that is a whole other can of worms (that i am just learning) but i like to use the proverbial threads for a second and over analyse what could really be a simple thing, because i tend to do that anyway and it's fun.
Moriarty (descendant of Muircheartach) is, according to what i was able to search, an Irish name that means 'sea warrior' as the name means skilled and seaman. Now, we combine this with the context of both the meaning of the name and the meaning of the word in Latin, we get the irony; Professor Moriarty dies by the waterfall. But here's where it gets interesting and where i really am grasping at straws.
Non omnis moriar - Not all of me will die (loose translation)
You can find this in Horace, Odes 3.30. Really, the poem had nothing to do with the Sherlock stories BUT this poem used moriar and the usage here was very interesting; Not all of me will die. When Professor Moriarty died, his cabal of criminal network was still active. Cut off the head and you'll spawn 3 more. So Sherlock spent years trying to disable the network to keep the world safe from them.
Anyways, that's all i got to spill for the night. That's some straws i just grabbed. Anyways, good morning/afternoon/evening/night fellas.
