I can count days that I don’t have a headache with one hand. And I’m not young😅. I’ve always blamed stress as being the cause of my headaches but honestly I get it even on good days. Turns out there’s a link between headaches and ADHD 1)Causes related to our poor task management from deficits in executive functions and interoception - there are days (way too many) when I am reminded to eat/ drink/ pee by the headache I get around 4pm instead of actual hunger, thirst or feeling like your bladder is touching your lungs. 2) ADHD and migraines - while not an established comorbid, migraines are frequently seen in those with ADHD. I believe it’s due to the dopamine link in both migraine and adhd. 3)Medication crash - especially with short acting meds as they tend to have a steep rise and fall in effects 4)Vertical heterophoria - This is an eye condition where you have a subtle misalignment between your eyes. The strain that ensues results in headaches. Can be treated with prism glasses but it’s something most ophthalmologists don’t believe in because it’s not in their textbook. Haha what’s new right? There’s no single underlying cause for each person’s ADHD symptoms. The causes of ADHD is like an onion with multiple layers. You simply start with one layer and slowly peel away until you get to the core. The fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle (ie, eating real food plant-based diet, regular physical activity, and having a supportive community), applies to everyone. Then, from there you determine what changes you need to deviate from the norm (ie eliminating gluten, dairy, nuts) according to your personal situations. Having the basic nutrition on point is like having basic utility to your home. If you have not electricity, how do you know if your refrigerator or oven is working or not? Without proper nutrition and physical activity, some of the ADHD symptoms could be manifestations of the lack of proper nutrition and physical activities. What does a basic real food plant-based diet for ADHD look like? Each meal should have 4 components: non-starchy vegetable of all colors unprocessed organic protein from both animal and plant sources healthy low-glycemic index carbs healthy unprocessed fats After having the basic lifestyle changes dialed in, any remaining symptoms are your clues to the next onion layer.
