NOT prerequisites to humanity
Things that I've seen said to be either -a universal human experience (it isn't) -Unique to humans (it's not) -absence of this implies you are inhuman (it doesn't) -some combination of the above
This is an incomplete list of things that AREN'T required to make you human. Feel free to add to it!
Feeling love/attraction (of ANY form) Caring about music in any meaningful way/at all A sense of ownership over land/objects etc The ability to wage war Being a member of the species Homo sapiens (Other members of the homo genus were also human) Being able to make and/or use tools Creating/using language Using/harnessing fire Sowing seeds (and cultivating crops) Making art Being able to see/speak/hear/walk/live independently etc Being able bodied/being disabled Not having a mental illness/having a mental illness Altering the environment to suit your needs better Being diurnal Wanting to travel/wanting to stay 'settled' Being straight/having a specific sexuality or romantic attraction Being cisgender/having (or not having) a specific gender identity Belonging to a certain religious group
Fuck it. I'm tired of seeing this stuff. There's no category of 'inhuman' person. I don't care if they're the worst/you hate them/can't relate at all/whatever. You don't have to like everyone but that does not deprive them of their personhood. I repeat: This is an incomplete list of things that AREN'T required to make you human. Feel free to add to it!
DAME JANE GOODALL (1934-Died October 1st 2025,at 91). English primatologist and anthropologist. Regarded as a pioneer in primate ethology, she was best known for more than six decades of field research on the social and family life of wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Beginning in 1960, under the mentorship of the palaeontologist Louis Leakey, Goodall's work challenged prevailing scientific views by showing that chimpanzees make and use tools, hunt co-operatively, and display complex emotions and social structures once thought unique to humans.Jane Goodall - Wikipedia
