World Autism Awareness Day is big bucks these days, and organisations, businesses and even government buildings around the world now “light it up blue” for autism awareness. While pretty blue buildings and monuments are undoubtedly pleasing from a sensory perspective, this year I urge you to reconsider your support of their campaign. Here’s why.

We are already “aware” of autism - what autistic people need from society is more widespread education about our neurological differences, and willingness from the neurotypical majority to accommodate us in situations they may never have considered before as “unfriendly” to autistic people.

No amount of fundraising, puzzle piece t-shirts or baking blue cupcakes is going to change the fact that we live in a world designed at almost every turn to accommodate neurotypicals, with very little thought to improving the lives of actually autistic people, especially autistic adults.

En el Trastorno del Espectro Autista podemos incluir a muchísimas personas distintas; no podemos organizarlas sólo en una línea recta donde se considere la severidad global de sus características. Dos personas que estén en el mismo nivel de severidad pueden ser muy diferentes gracias a todo el resto de características que tiene cada una. Esto implica que, si bien hay características que definen al autismo, no todas las personas autistas se ven igual: cada persona presenta una combinación única de cada rasgo en distintas intensidades. En el gráfico buscamos ejemplificar cómo se pueden presentar estas combinaciones únicas e individuales, y la variación que puede existir de persona a persona.

Comprender esto es central para que integremos la idea de que las personas autistas, a pesar de compartir rasgos generales, son un grupo diverso y que pueden tener un diagnóstico incluso si no coinciden con el estereotipo sociocultural de alguien perteneciente al espectro.

(Es importante mencionar que el enmascaramiento no es parte de los criterios diagnósticos formales del Trastorno del Espectro Autista. Sin embargo, esta variable impacta muchísimo cómo se ve y actúa una persona dentro del espectro y, por esta razón, decidimos incluirla).
