I must scream. Please ignore my rant.

I think what makes Tom King’s writing so mediocre is that he is constantly trying to remind us that what we’re reading is stupid. He really tries to push the “Batman is weak and mentally ill and that’s why he dresses like a furry to fight crime” perspective. The characters are constantly referencing their own canon in that context. It always pulls me out of it. It’s okay if you don’t get why people like Batman but why would you write for it if that’s the case? Go write about a broken down alcoholic dealing with his abandonment issues. Go yell insults in the back of a dark theater. Rewriting the Batman lore is such a bad outlet.

I just finished reading Gotham City Sirens and man, the witty banter, the sympathy for the characters’ flaws, the colorful interpersonal dynamic, chaotic plots...it really reminded me of why I ever cared about these characters to begin with. I think this 2016 to now version’s stilted facsimile has been going on so long I just got used to it. But coming back from GCS, it’s painfully obvious that the mental issues here aren’t Batman’s, and that this run is not meant for people who like fun.
