Beverly Marsh wasn’t usually one to develop a crush. In fact, she hated the term. It made her feel weak knowing you had her wrapped around your finger. Knowing you had the power to make her drop anything and everything without question, just so she could talk to you. Which was really fucking stupid, considering you two were best friends. Although you both, unknowingly, did want something more.
Beverly watched you anxiously tap your foot against the floor. She noticed you tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. She saw how you gently bit your lip, nodding your head slightly at what the teacher just said.
God, she wished she could be the one to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. She wished she could gently bite your lip. She wished she could be yours.
Your eyes slowly wandered around the room, until you caught a glimpse of bright blue ones. You turned your head and looked at Beverly, giving her a warm smile.
Her eyes darted around the room, looking anywhere but yours. She felt her face slowly heat up, cheeks turning a bright red. Yours did the same, although you turned around and looked down, desperately trying to hide it.
You both frantically tried to cover your faces, but failed miserably as you caught each others’ glance again. Beverly’s face was almost as bright as her hair now, and yours was almost as bright as your nail polish.
Richie sat in the back of the class, watching the two of you with a smirk on his lips. He knew exactly what he had to do.
“Hey, Bev!” Richie called to Beverly as he walked out of the classroom. She turned around and looked at him, a puzzled look on her face as he motioned for her to follow him.
She reluctantly started towards him, following him as he walked out of the school and around back. They stopped near the bike rack and Richie turned to face her.
“Richie,” Beverly started. “Why- why did you bring me here?”
“Okay, so, Y/N has to come back here to get her bike-”
“Wait, Y/N? What does this have to do with Y-Y/N?” She asked, frantically turning her head side to side.
“Oh, well, you like her, don’t you?” He smirked as Beverly looked at him with wide eyes.
“What? Me- me? Like Y/N? I don’t- I wouldn’t- what?” The apples of her cheeks started to turn red, getting brighter and brighter by the second. Richie smirked and put a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s obvious, Bev. We all know you like her.”
She sighed in defeat, looking at the ground.
“It’s really that obvious?” She asked, looking up at him. He nodded. “So, why are we here again?”
“Okay! So, Y/N has to come get her bike, right?”
Richie scoffed. “Shut it, Marsh. So, when she comes around the corner, you have to pretend to flirt with me.” He said, a satisfied smirk on his face.
“It will make her jealous, duh! Then she’ll be all over you!” He threw his hands up like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“But what if that doesn’t-” Richie cut her off as he heard footsteps approach.
You rounded the corner as Richie pushed Beverly against the school wall, moving his face closer to hers.
“Come on, Rich! We can’t do this here!” Beverly giggled, trying to make it sound as real as possible.
“Why not?” He smirked and slid his hand down her waist.
“You know you love me, Marsh.”
You stood there in shock as you watched the two of them go back in forth. God, you were so stupid to think that Beverly liked you. Of course, she liked Richie. Why would she ever like a girl like you?
You turned around as tears brimmed your eyes, rushing around the corner before you sprinted away from the school. You heard Beverly and Richie calling your name, but that didn’t matter. Not when your heart had been shattered into pieces.
“I knew that wouldn't work!” Beverly yelled in frustration. “God, now she probably hates me.”
She looked at Richie. “What?”
“Go tell her how you feel, Bev.”
She smiled and whipped around, running to the only place she knew you would be.
Beverly found you silently crying to yourself, sitting at the edge of the cliff above the quarry. Her heart broke at the sight as she walked towards you.
“Y/N?” She whispered, scared to break you even more.
You jumped up and turned around, eyes red and cheeks tear-stained. You scoffed as you made eye contact with her.
“Can we talk?” She asked, slowly approaching you. You crossed your arms and narrowed your eyes.
“Y/N, please. Say something.”
“What the hell am I supposed to say, Beverly? What the hell am I supposed to say to the girl I’ve been completely head over heels in love with since the 3rd grade, who I just so happened to find flirting with one of my best friends! Were you trying to hurt me? Have you just been playing with my emotions this whole time?” Your voice cracked slightly as you practically yelled the last part.
Beverly sighed and looked at you with sad eyes. “I’m sorry, Y/N.”
“So you’ve just been toying with my feeling?”
She opened her mouth and closed it again, unable to think of the right words.
“Right, that’s what I thought.” You turned around and looked out at the lake.
“What? Are you just here to hurt me more? Because you’ve already done that enough.”
You turned around. “Will I what, Beverly? What do you want me to do so that I can get hurt again?”
“I never meant to hurt you, Y/N!” She yelled in exasperation. “Will you just listen?”
You sighed and looked at her, sitting down at the edge of the cliff. You motioned for her to sit next to you.
She sighed. “I never meant to hurt you, Y/N. God, I would never want to hurt you. I just- I love you. I’ve loved you since the day we met but I never said anything because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. The only reason Richie and I were flirting was because he told me it would make you jealous and maybe it would get your attention and that you’d talk to me and that you’d “be all over me” but of course I didn’t believe him and now you hate me and I ruined everything because I’m such an idiot-”
You cut off her rambling by gently pressing your lips to hers. She smiled into the kiss as you put your hands in her hair. She leaned her body into yours, slowly pushing you back as she put a hand on your waist. Your back hit the ground softly as you pulled her body closer to yours. She firmly pressed her lips to yours and deepened the kiss.
She pulled away for a breath of air, and you flipped her over so she was against the ground. “I guess Richie was right.”
She smirked and grabbed the collar of your shirt, pulling you down so your lips met hers. You put your hands in your hair, gently tugging at her red curls. She had her hands all over you, first around your neck, then waist, then hand on your cheek and the small of your back. She finally just let them fall to your waist again as she pulled you into her.
Yeah, Richie was definitely right.
