Naruto Hot take: The Bloody Mist regime and its inquisition against bloodline users would've fallen within days instead of years if Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto existed in the Narutoverse.
Fanart Cover for Desert Song by brokendoll226!
Summary taken from ao3:
"Yuri gave a lonely child a teddy bear once, then spent years avoiding what he became. After the Chunin Exams leave Suna vulnerable and Gaara improbably becomes Kazekage, her alchemy kekkei genkai and sealing expertise make her essential to the village's survival - which means working closely with the boy who never forgot her kindness. Rebuilding a desert village and navigating intelligence missions is complicated enough without confronting a shared past neither of them knows how to talk about."
This repost is just for me to keep an archive. It's an answer from this convo.
I’m not a specialist in genetics so I won’t talk about recessive or dominant genes but in term of sociology and historical perceptive the purity bloodline theme even if it’s not discuss directly in the fiction it’s implicitly the case. let’s not forget Naruto is strongly based on Japanese culture, folklore and religion. Being a fiction doesn’t mean popping up out of the blue. The fiction just put more fantasy and magic for the sake of entertainment on practices already existing in reality. In ancient japan, endogamous marriage were not the norm but permitted specially in aristocratic circle or in rural area wishing to preserve some secret knowledges.
I’m sorry I couldn’t find an english version so here is my very rough translation of the anthropologist Emmanuel Todd about Origin of family system (2011)
1- Marriage between cousins : The japanese descent family is distinguished from the german and the korean one by a slight endogamous tendency. Marriage between cousins is not forbidden in rural traditional Japan. After the second world war, in a society highly industrialised the global percentage of marriage between cousin 1st degree is 7.2%. A number, although not important, can be compared to Europe with a number inferior to 1% at the same period.
2- High aristocracy from Heian Era gravitating around the imperial family did not have any prohibition against consanguinity with the exception of parent/children, and brother/sister. As noticed by McCullough, a man could freely married an aunt, a niece, or a cousin […] It is clearly a classist endogamy according to McCullough, a tiny dominant group pull apart through endogamy from the rest of society. Thus they preserve in the same time bloodline “purety”, power exclusivity both symbolic and material.
There was an other part from the same chapter but a bit too long to translate where the author stress on how in some traditional japanese family, they put emphases on the elder child having a distinctive status, education and privilege than the other siblings.
Hyuga and Uchiha are both view in the Narutoverse as a very prestigious and traditional clan. Huyga even use terms Soke/Bunke which is a concept already existing in japanese culture. So we can associate them with a kind of aristocracy among the shinobi world. Both of them are said to descendant from Alien but even irl a lot of aristocratic family still proclaim a divine ancestry to justify their power over a majority (Ethiopia kings from Salomon, British queen claims to descent from the biblical King David) and in japanese case the imperial family still believe today to descend from Amaterasu. So following this aristocratic logic, keeping the blood “pure” is extremely important to them, they think it’s the source of their power.
I know that for a western/christian point of view, cousin union is seen as disgusting and incestuous (although European aristocracy still do it regardless for the reason explained previously) but it’s not the case in most part of the world, (I’m not defending it I’m just stating facts), and it’s not automatically produce disable children otherwise the Middle East and South Asia who have a long and stable tradition of doing so would have disappeared from Earth long time ago.
My point was just to say I don’t think the bloodline purity is a fandom invention, it’s a natural deduction. Senju are exogamous by choice (they have a tradition of making matrimonial and political alliances hence why Konoha was possible with a Senju driving force) in the opposite Hyuga and Uchiha seems to be strongly endogamous also by choice based on the fact they keep very similar features, a very strong sense of pride, an elitist education, a protective and secretive approach to their culture and a higher proportion of clan members possessing KKG (contrary to Senju where Mokuton is limited solely to Hashirama). Historically marrying your 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree cousin through arranged marriage will maximize the chance to keep some traits (good or bad) in the family. Hinata choosing herself to marry a non-Hyuga is an exception rather than a rule 1) Hinata/Neji/Hiashi relationship where her father is seen to slowly change his mind about his very conservative approach to tradition 2) Naruto is the most powerful Ninja post-war, son of an Hokage, future Hokage himself so they might play lottery with the genetic pool but they gain a great prestige and affluence by association with him.

** Bleed Out by HazelBeka
Word Count: 103,754 (16/16)
Summary: After Iruka’s confrontation with Kakashi before the chuunin exams, he’s targeted by a serial killer who seems to be picking off disrespectful chuunin. Iruka survives, but it’s only a matter of time before the killer returns to finish the job. Finding his name on the suspects’ list, Kakashi bullies his way onto Tenzou’s investigation in an attempt to clear his name and protect Iruka from the real threat.
Comments: Murder Mystery, ANBU, Seals Master!Iruka, basically all the best tropes all in one fic. This was the first Naruto fic I ever read, so I’m very attached and compare all KakaIru fics to this one.

** The Bingo Book by flailinginlove
Word Count: 64,500 (10/10)
Summary: Kakashi avoided relationships. He didn't want to put others in danger. So he couldn't understand why there was a face staring back at him, as a sub-entry to his own, in this Bingo Book. Umino Iruka (lover) the caption read. It didn't matter that it wasn't true. The Book was fact, and to Kakashi's enemies, Iruka had just become a weakness they could exploit.
Comments: Sensor-type!Iruka, ANBU, awkward KakaIru, what else could you possibly want in a fic? I love it when Iruka surprises people with how good of a ninja he is, even though he's "just a chuunin teacher". One of my favorite tropes, along with his chakra-location (like echolocation) from that one episode. Also, flailinginlove is an amazing author and you should go check out more of their stories.

How to File Form 39-B by thehoyden
Word Count: 10,426 (1/1)
Summary: The first time Iruka met Hatake Kakashi, he was still on some pretty god painkillers.
Comments: Kakashi/Iruka. This one is cute, very light-hearted read with a pinch of angst and a heaping of Iruka parenting Naruto.

The Bijozakura Seal by megyal
Word Count: 38,055 (13/13)
Summary: Kakashi and Iruka are bonded together, entirely against their wishes. While Iruka begins to deal with it, Kakashi still has… doubts.
Comments: Mission!fic, the two start off not exactly friends, and this fic definitely leans into the angsty and kinda uncomfortable, not-as-often-considered side of having a psychic bond with someone you don't know that well or trust.

Part of the Pack by SparrowStrike
Word Count: 125,303 (37/37)
Summary: Legend has it the Hatake Clan is an off shoot of the Inuzuka Clan. It's where they get their sharp teeth, affinity for ninken, and tendency to casually adopt every other person they meet.
When Kakashi realizes Naruto's assigned caretakers aren't even sort of doing their job, the young anbu decides to do a bit of long term babysitting (and possibly commit treason). What follows is the story of Uzumaki-Hatake Naruto and his unconventional family.
This is primarily a slice of life piece and heavy on both fluff and angst. It covers a lot of the canon events and has cannon typical violence and darker themes. It can be read as a stand alone, but is the first work of 3 planned in this AU.
Comments: Dad!Kakashi raising Naruto, lots of politics, hella canon divergence. Part 1 of 3 in The Pack series.

Roots and Wings by ideaoforder
Word Count: 84,985 (12/12)
Summary: When Naruto is kidnapped from his orphanage at age three, Kakashi is so done with this shit. He gets Naruto back, tells the Hokage where to go (politely, because he isn't suicidal), and raises the boy himself. Or, you know, tries and is proud when there aren't too many explosions.
Then everybody starts to copy him and it's a whole thing.
Comments: Found family plus Fix-It fic galore! Focus on Kakashi being a good dad to Naruto, but does have some pairings aren’t that central to the plot: Kakashi/Iruka, Naruto/Shikamaru. Bonus Iruka being a Fuuinjutsu BAMF.

Word Count: 30,892 (7/7))
Summary: Kakashi finds love and family, all in one near-successful murder.

Thought and Feeling Interwound by tucuxi
Word Count: 36,122 (1/1)
Summary: Tsunade walked around the desk and sat directly next to Iruka, turning both of their chairs with a casually powerful grasp. In the end they were facing each other, not the desk. He tried and failed to hold her gaze. She reached out and tipped his chin up, forcing him to look at her again. Another hit landed. This time it came from Iruka's left. It felt like it must have shattered bone, ribs grinding against each other in his chest, and Iruka bit his tongue almost until it bled to keep from crying out.
“Tell me, Iruka-sensei,” Tsunade said. “How long, exactly, have you been feeling Hatake Kakashi’s emotions?"
Comments: Kakashi/Iruka. Accidental Soul Bond fic, also known as Jutsu Gone Wrong. Slowburn fic with lots of denial and angst and misunderstandings.

Fic Masterlist here for full list
Imagine: Daryl Dixon with sharingan
First tomoe: unlocks when Daryl’s mom dies in the house fire. She’s drunk and tries to put a genjutsu on Daryl to make him think he’s watching the Trail of Tears instead. Merle breaks in, releases the genjutsu, and gets Daryl out. (Later he takes Daryl to a creek and shows him how to trick catfish into jumping out of the water and "drowning" themselves on the bank for dinner. It’s Daryl’s best meal in months.)
Second tomoe: unlocks when the dealer he and Merle hang out with punches Daryl and tries to kill Merle. Usually the second tomoe would’ve appeared by that point, but Daryl dealt with so much at a young age that he’s "stunted" and needs truer emotion to cause it.
Third tomoe: on the rooftop in Atlanta when he finds Merle’s hand. Merle always teased him for being a late bloomer. Daryl doesn’t even think about his eyes until he gets some quiet at the CDC.
Mongekyou: when Daryl has to put down Merle, it takes the shape of a Cherokee Rose. He‘s only aware of one of his abilities (Eye of Hypnotism), Wrath, which takes those he casts the genjutsu on to a black and deathly quiet forest with a yellow and purple sky that seems to move in fast forward. Creatures the victim cannot see constantly lurk close enough to sense. The grass feels like thorns. Wrath represents the nonexistent and the dark. Daryl doesn’t know what his ability with his Eye of Insight is; but it represents the material and light, and Daryl doesn’t think an ability that represents that can exist in the bleak apocalypse.
Tailed Beasts = Kekkei Genkai Analysis/Rant
I feel like it’s fairly obvious, but all Kekkei Genkai comes from Tailed Beasts, passed down from jinchūriki.
We saw the Sharingan, Byakugan and Rinnegan start to exist when Kaguya consumed the fruit. And we saw the Mokuton (Wood) and Shikotsumyaku (Bone) when Kaguya finally merged with the God Tree, creating the 10 Tails, and as a jinchūriki, passing down the Kekkei Genkai to her sons and grandsons. And we see that the other Bloodline Limits bare striking resemblance to jinchūriki abilities.
But the thing I keep thinking about is, how? Outside of Kaguya, who physically became one with the 10 Tails, the others weren’t biologically connected to their Beasts. Did the jinchūriki do it? Did they purposely give their containers abilities? Or was it like radiation? Over time they changed? Or the way they were sealed?
There’s a pretty big difference between Gaara’s sealing and Naruto’s. Naruto’s sealing, coming from 2 of the most skilled fuinjutsu ninja of the time - one of which came from the clan that mastered fuinjutsu - must have been the prime. Maybe why he never got an ability? Gaara, on the other hand, was done by a medic ninja with a specialty in poison and puppetry. Remember Suna was poor for quite some time and the seal needed a compatible child. And the seal was terrible. But Gaara did inherit an ability. So, if Naruto, with the best sealing, had the most distance from his Beast and did not gain an ability while Gaara, with the worst sealing and closest connection to his beast (by sealing not personal connection), did, in fact, gain an ability and a strong inclination for it then we see a pattern.
BUT, Gaara’s father, Fourth Kazekage Rasa, also had the ability. Just like the Third Kazekage before him. The mysterious thing about this is that neither Kankuro nor Temari inherited the ability. So, what’s going on?
Well, it is stated that jinchūriki are usually related to the Kage of their village, to give them a strong connection and against treason. But what if that’s not all? Maybe some of the others realized the connection or at least had a hunch. But, you know, without any knowledge on sealing they couldn’t do anything about it. Or they tried and it didn’t end well. Remember how it’s stated multiple times that the villages had trouble with the Tailed Beasts getting out? Well, if they had a secure way of sealing them, which they all did cause Naruto does talk to each of the others in Purgatory, why would they keep getting out? They must have been trying to change the seals.
Remember, Kumo does try to kidnap Kushina because she is an Uzumaki. But why? What do the Uzumaki do best? Sealing. Also, what does Kumo lack the most? Kekkei Genkai.
The thing is, weakening the seal so the person can gain something, shouldn’t be that hard right? But, it is stated that the people viewed the Tailed Beasts as having a strong pull on the minds of the jinchūriki, so what if they were trying to create a seal that brought the jinchūriki close enough, physically, to gain an ability but not the mind?
The Tailed Beasts all claim the people of the Shinobi World are selfish and power hungry, well what’s more power hungry than trying to take the Tailed Beasts’ body while shutting out the mind? Think about it, Tailed Beasts can die, physically. The Three Tails, Isobu, dies with Nohara Rin and spends years reconstructing itself from surrounding chakra. It’s mind had to still be there for it’s body to build around, but it couldn’t have been a painless situation. What if, like that the people wanted to separate the Tailed Beasts? Body gone but the mind still trying to rebuild. That sounds agonizing. The only one who came close was Minato, and he separated the Soul, and while I can’t say anything on how that must feel like, I can say that the sealing itself had very much hurt Kurama, the Nine Tails. So much so he tried to break out of the strongest natural sealing and kill a baby.
So, why don’t Temari and Kankuro have the Kekkei Genkai? Well, what if it’s the sealing, too? Gaara’s may be the worst, making him the closest, but it isn’t Kaguya and the 10 Tails, after eating it’s only fruit. It’s a common thread though. Kurotsuchi has Lava Release but not Onoki’s Dust Release. Hashirama is the only one with Wood Release.
What if it’s the fact that none of the Tailed Beasts alone are strong enough to alter the jinchūriki’s DNA past superficial. The only Kekkei Genkai with a strong enough hereditary chain are the ones that come from Kaguya, and even then it's said to be every other child. Remember, not every Uchiha had the Sharingan, and even less the Mangekyo. Not every Kaguya had the Shikotsumyaku. The only one with a continues chain was the Hyuuga. And the Hyuuga, as bad as it may be, are very strongly hinted to be inbred.
I don’t know how to end this, or what it could mean, but it’s all very interesting to see.
Mokuton!Naruto
Ashura was the first to use the mokuton, Hashirama (Ashura reincarnated) was the second.
By all rights, Naruto should have been the third...
(After all, Indora had the exact same Mangekyo Sharingan pattern as Sasuke...)
