he said with a smile on his face, he dragged you into some kind of park, filled with kids running around playing tag, dogs shitting on the grass, and some parents watching their children play with glee .
you and him weren’t really lovers, more like friends with benefits, but he treated you as if you were one, kissed you, loved you, and even called you his partner without ever confessing his love to you . You didn’t either, you didn’t think it was necessary at that time .
“ whats the surprise, hmm ? “ you asked, smelling the free air, ears capturing the noise you won’t hear anywhere else but this joyful park, you’ll probably miss it, since you were going abroad for a few years, your eyes darted over to his scarf on his neck, messily done .
“ it’s really special, meaning you have to take care of it, ‘kay ? “ he exclaimed, practically jumping to the moon with how excited he was, mostly in his mind because he wanted to be nonchalant . his smile was starting to infect you too—with your arms swinging side by side slightly, and how your heart started to quicken a bit .
before you even got to ask what it was, he led you to a bench and pulled out a small box, white with simple decor, and a ribbon tied around it like it was a Christmas present . as you opened it, you were greeted with some photobooth pictures that you guys took when you were in highschool . there were the chocolates that you loved since childhood, and a ring ?
you took the ring in between your thumb and index finger, inspecting it and looking at him . He was blushing and smiling, fidgeting with his fingers . “ happy anniversary . “ he muttered, you swore you almost wanted to cry right there and then . he kissed your cheek and grabbed the ring to put it on you, as if you were getting married .
“ i thought this ring would look good on you, and it did . “ he paused to sigh in relief, then continued . “ promise me, after you come back here, we’ll get married . “ he held both your hands, and you held his back .
“ i promise . “ you replied with a murmur and gently kissed him .
when you went to the airport, he was there with you, and you knew he was holding his tears all the way, because you were trying to aswell . as you went in, you waved him goodbye with the ring worn on your finger, which he responded with a wave too, eyes on the ring and onto your face .
some months into the country, your sister texted you with how she fell inlove with a guy, you thought, he has the same name as your lover him . your thought bubble was quickly popped when she continued to talk about how he was so kind to her, so sweet, and so energetic to her . you wanted to meet this man, he sounded so fun, and you thought you yet again about double dates with you and him and your sister and her boyfriend .
after a few years later, when you came back, you were invited to a wedding, but it wasn’t an ordinary one . your heart shattered, face pale and frozen in place . it wasn’t your friends wedding, but your boyfriends his wedding . and it wasn’t with you, no, that wasn’t even the worst part, the worst part was that it was your sisters and his wedding .
even though your mind told you to desperately not go, your hearts desire was stronger and won the battle . you went anyways, to support your sister . who knew this was the guy she was talking about ? who knew that all this time she’d been falling inlove with the man you fell for first .
your eyes prickled with tears threatening to fall, your feet were heavy, and it felt like plants emerged from the ground and grasped onto your ankles to forbid you from entering that chapel for the sake of your sanity, but you walked in anyways .
Your sister ran up towards you and smiled happily, not noticing your tears and the sadness with realization on your face, but you know who did, and that person was in fact him .
“ you’re back, i missed you so much ! “ she hugged you tightly, and you hugged back, knowing it wasn’t her fault, and that she didn’t know .
He only stared at you until your sister left you both alone to chat with her friends . you both just stared at eachother until he opened his mouth to speak, almost frowning, not with annoyance or anything like that—but guilt for creating a promise to marry you but being the one to break it, and leading you on just to dote on your sister while you were gone in the end .
the only words that left his mouth were . . .
