So Fusion between different gems in Steven Universe represents different forms of love, right?

Familial love lets the Crystal Gems fuse to protect each other and complete missions.

We see romantic love in Garnet, Jade, Rhodonite, and Fluorite.

Amethyst and Steven bond over shared feelings and familial/platonic love form Smoky Quartz.

Steven and Connie, who are friends that also have a bit of a crush on each other, form Stevonnie with platonic/romantic love.

So having seen romantic, platonic, and familial love throughout the series, it's only fitting that the final act of fusion is one of self-love, as Steven's gem and human parts fuse back together.
