Color Spread Graphic Tees Appreciation Post
hi! mentioning Crocodile in that previous Dofla ask got me thinking about the Iva-and-Croco-secret convo on Impel Down. At its easiest the "secret" could be knowledge of Croco's weakness to water, since in Alabasta it was such a big deal, but does the Japanese text offers more clairvoyance? Any apparent callbacks or does it reads more as part of a backstory Luffy/the reader wouldn't yet be knowledgeable of? Am I thirstying too much for panel crumbles because Croco?
It’s kind of ambiguous (unsurprisingly, probably). Ivankov says a bit here- the important part is ヴァターシはこいつの弱みを一つ握ってる/vatashi wa koitsu no yowami wo hitotsu nigitteru. Yowami is the tricky word- it means ‘weakness,’ but it can also mean like ‘sore point,’ as in a topic one doesn’t want discussed, so it’s hard to tell if it’s a literal weakness like you mentioned or something less tangible. And then nigiru means like ‘to grasp/seize/hold tightly,’ which does seem like a kind of odd phrasing if it’s just the water weakness he’s talking about, at least to me.
Either way, it does read a lot more like a story we’re not privy to, especially cause Ivankov explicitly says his knowledge comes from when Crocodile was a rookie and we still have basically zero knowledge about that time. And then there’s also the fact that Crocodile is like, immediately visibly pissed as soon as Ivankov enters the conversation. So, I definitely think there’s something there. When and if we’ll get to find out about it is yet to be seen, though.
Thanks to @gntkreed for chapter 609 and 726's Brook
When Jinbe first talks to Luffy, he addresses him as お前さん/omae-san, on account of not yet knowing his name. It’s an interesting choice, cause he could have just used a more formal ‘you’ pronoun, but he doesn’t- instead he uses casual/masculine ‘you,’ but with a respectful suffix attached, and I’ve actually never seen a character do this before.
The effect it creates is kind of contradictory, and it gives the impression that Jinbe is- kinda rough and straightforward, but also moreover a fundamentally nice and respectful guy. Jinbe’s dialogue in general strikes an interesting balance between formality and bluntness, and it’s pretty fun to read.
後生の頼み/goshou no tanomi (what Jinbe yells from his cell to get Luffy’s attention before asking to go with him) is a kind of old-fashioned and very serious way of making a request. The full phrase is 後生一生の頼み/goshou isshou no tanomi.
頼み/tanomi means ‘request’, 一生/isshou means ‘whole life’ and 後生/goshou means ‘afterlife.’ So this phrase is basically like... “If I could make one request in my whole lifetime and afterlife-”
oh hey it’s bastard
What's your favorite color spread?
Dude you can’t expect me to pick just ONE (also this is only up to where I am in the manga cause I’m too lazy to sort through all the rest in addition and this post needs to stay a manageable length). So here’s a top four in no particular order.
Chapter 269:
Chapter 540:
Chapter 107:
Chapter 464:
