I’ve always loved this colorspread too...Law just looks so grumpy...

So, this volume of the manga is called ドレスローザの忘れ物/doresurouza no wasuremono. “Dressrosa’s Forgotten Things.”　

忘れ物/wasuremono is a word you’ll hear a lot if you ever find yourself taking trains or buses in Japan. It  refers to stuff dropped or accidentally left behind, like purses or umbrellas. Or, you know, toys. I’ve never heard it used outside of that context, and for me it brings to mind just, stray junk lost on accident. 

And it is specifically about things- I looked it up and saw the title of this volume is translated as just ‘Dressrosa’s Forgotten’ in English, but I feel like that loses some of the nuance. 

Because later, here, when the toy soldier is explaining to Franky about the plight of the people-turned-toys, he describes them as 忘れた者/wasuretamono. It’s almost the same word, but it’s not, because it uses the kanji 者/mono (’person’) instead of 物/mono (’thing’). So with that one change, they all of a sudden go from being forgotten things to forgotten people.

Honestly if you think about it, the fact that the toys essentially retain their memories and are still their human selves trapped in a different vessel while everyone they knew just forgets them is really terrifying.

I don’t exactly blame Franky for thinking the toys are some marvel of technology but the truth is...so much darker...
