The long-awaited musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash will take place on The Flash on March 21, with a lead-in on Supergirl the night before, Warner Bros. Television and The CW revealed today.
The episodes will presumably take place on Earth-1, since the bulk of the story will take place on The Flash, although other Earth-38 characters besides Supergirl will be featured. It isn't clear whether there will be stories told on both Earths or whether those characters will follow Supergirl through the multiverse.
The sixteenth episode of Supergirl's second season will lead into the event, followed by most of the story taking place on the seventeenth episode of The Flash season 3.
The episode will be titled “Duet,” and will be directed by Dermott Downs. According to The CW, the episode is highlighted by singing performances from Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist, Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, Carlos Valdes, Jeremy Jordan, and John Barrowman, while also including non-singing guest star appearances from Supergirl’s David Harewood and Chris Wood.
(We're kind of holding out hope for a simple refusal to sing from Harewood's J'Onn J'Onzz, a la Corbin Bernsen's cameo in the Psych musical.)
No word yet on who will be cast as The Music Meister, the main villain of the piece. Guest appearances from Garber and Barrowman, though, indicate a larger scale for the crossover since currently those two are busy duking it out on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
Executive producer Greg Berlanti had previously told ComicBook.com that he planned on using Garber's vocal skills for the crossover. Garber also sang in an episode of Legends this year, as an attempt to infiltrate a Nazi gathering while the team was tracking a time abberation in World War II.
Earlier reports had suggested that Joss Whedon could be under consideration to direct the crossover, but if true, it looks like he and The CW couldn't make it work. Downs, a former child actor who appeared in Shazam! and Freaky Friday in the '70s, has become one of The Flash's go-to directors. He has helmed the season 1 finale as well as both Grodd episodes and The Flash's installment of the "Invasion!" crossover. He has also directed a number of episodes of DC's Legends of Tomorrow, including next week's midseason premiere.
