The Nonbinary Flag
—Aka “the enby flag”
Definition: A person whose gender does not fall into the categories of male or female (aka the gender binary).
The term ‘nonbinary’ is both an identity and an umbrella term for people whose gender doesn’t fit under the labels of “male” or “female”. Some nonbinary people feel that they are halfway female and halfway male. Others may feel they are gender-neutral, or are a gender that is completely separate from the scale of [masculine -> androgynous -> feminine].
A lot of nonbinary people will decide to use they/them pronouns. Others may use neopronouns (xe/xem, ze/zir, etc.). However, some nonbinary people will choose to use he/him or she/her pronouns, and that’s fine too. Pronouns ≠ gender. Remember, there’s no one way to be nonbinary! :)
★ There are many genders under the umbrella of nonbinary, which we will be coming back to later. :)
i’ve just like, collected a bunch of he/they friends....
Society: Ok, so who are you sexually attracted to?
Me: Oof I'd rather opt out of that
Society:O-ok... I guess you can do that. What about romantic attraction though?
Me: I'd rather not choose if that's cool with you.
Society: Umm...
Me: Jk
Society: phew
Me: I'm not picking a side even if you do care
Society: K you fucking bitch. Pick a gender then. Male or Female, those are your options
Me: Ok, so, the thing is
Society: What now
Me: no
well

Hey, hm... Can someone help me? I recently realized I'm non-binary, but I'm not sure yet if I prefer she/her (I'm AFAB) or they/them. In my mother language, we don't have any neutral pronouns like "they". So I guess that part of my issue is that it would be too complicated to start going by a neutral pronoun that would be an invented word. I still haven't "come out" to my parents because the 1st thing they would do would be laughing at my face and ask what I am then, and I honestly think I would cry if that actually happens. Also because I don't really know what I am. I just know that I'm not a girl nor a guy. The only person who knows is my brother and I told him that I was okay with "she/her" but I've been thinking and I'm not sure if I'm actually ok with it because I feel a little discomfort every time people call me a girl because I'm not- Anyway. Any advice? Please? 🥺 I think I'll go crazy.

My name is Dylan and I use They/them pronouns. This is who I am and you can't take that from me. I am proud of what I have learned about myself and I always will be.
If you've got a better way to say this, I'm all ears. I don't want enbyphobic people to use my words against people who do identify this way.
So, nonbinary people don't owe anyone androgyny and nonbinary people can use she/her or he/him. I will not tolerate anyone saying otherwise.
But like I feel like people tend to forget,
nonbinary people don't owe anyone gendered presentations and pronouns.
Every time that I see
"she/her and he/him nonbinaries are valid",
it feels like propaganda
It's not those nonbinary people's fault. But those posts circulate in a way that feels really suspicious.
Like where is the energy for they/them pronouns?
Its always,
"Trans men are handsome
Trans women are beautiful
nonbinary people are.....nice."
And
"Nonbinary people who go by she/her are not women
Nonbinary people who go by he/him are not men
Nonbinary people who go by they/them are... valid."
I've tried making posts centered on validating people who use they/them.
Literally just,
"You aren't difficult for having they/them pronouns. You deserve to have your pronouns respected". 0 notes.
It's like they/them nonbinaries are considered high maintenance.
It reminds me of how disliking pink got labeled anti-feminist.
I don't dislike pink because it's girly and girly is bad. I dislike pink because it was forced on me. It's still forced on me.
But because companies profit from making separate pink products, the "if you still hate pink, you hate women" narrative gets more attention.
So why are they/them pronouns ignored?
Seems awfully convenient for the people who won't use gender neutral language.
