Joe Keery x Reader
Summary: When a smile escapes during an interview, your social media goes crazy with every interview you give afterward. And in the end, to your surprise, you actually manage to catch his attention and win the hat at the end of a concert.
Warnings: English is not my first language, so I'm sure it has many errors. It's a pre-romance. The character's last name is Aguileira because I wanted to, so if you don't like it, invent something in your head. Comments are always welcome and your vote is very important!
this is poorly written
I had a lot of fun writing this and lately Joe has been on my mind in an INSANE way, so I thought it was worth publishing this here. Kisses everyone.
You can find the part 2 here ELECTRIFIED PIECES
And here's my Masterlist.
ELECTRIFYING
Adjusting the microphone on me, the recording assistants left the stage area. I shuffled through the papers they handed me and smiled at the camera when recording started.
— Hi, my name is S/n Aguilera and you’re watching Preview with Fans Questions.
🎬
— What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened since becoming famous? From Elisiah_jil.
I read it out loud while looking up, thinking.
— Um… probably being recognized on the street, Elisiah. I’m not that big or well-known, but sometimes I’m like… at the grocery store and I feel watched, and when I look—yeah, I actually am.
I grab the next card and read it out loud.
— What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue acting? From lovebun. Lovebun. Funny.
I chuckled softly.
— Probably don’t give up. The hardest part is getting out of that stuck phase. After that, it’s still hard—but it’s important to just say… screw it. Do it anyway.
I answered, placing the card on the floor.
— Is there anyone you’re dying to collaborate with in the future? From Sarahaddams.
My laugh came out loud and my smile reached my eyes.
— Definitely. There are so many people I’d love to work with, Sarah. There are directors whose work I absolutely love, like Wes Anderson, among others, and several actors whose work I really admire.
I switch cards.
— What do you do when you’re not working? From Nick01.
I read a lot of romance novels, Nick. Sometimes I try to improve on the guitar… which goes very slowly. I work out too—it helps me a lot.
I smile, shrugging.
— What song are you obsessed with right now? From Phantom4ever.
First of all, that username made me sad. Second, I need my phone because I don’t remember song names.
I looked at production, who nodded, letting me grab my phone as I kept talking.
— I know two songs I’ve been listening to constantly. Fly and—
I look up, trying to remember, then smile and shake my head.
— Gap Tooth Smile, by Djo.
— Joe Keery?
Someone asked behind the cameras.
I drop my phone onto my thigh and bring my index finger to my teeth, biting lightly as I confirm with a mischievous grin that makes the backstage crew laugh.
— Uhum. Joe. Joe. Joe.
I mumble, smiling widely without looking at the camera.
— Next. Julie and the Phantoms is never coming back? Unfortunately, that was a personal decision from Netflix. They didin´t want us anymore.
I sigh.
— What’s your type of man? From Alicia.
I laughed when I read it and bit my lower lip.
— I never really noticed before, but lately I’ve realized that guys who play instruments attract me. Because, well… they… they know how to play their guitars well.
I said, feeling my cheeks heat up as people laughed.
— That’s all for today, guys. Kisses.

We will not be commenting on the Joe Keery situation at this time. The podcast studio was bigger than I expected.
Low lighting, walls covered with acoustic panels, and that undefined smell of old coffee mixed with expensive equipment. I had expected something less intimidating and more intimate.
A dark leather couch sat facing the table, with the microphones already positioned.
I adjusted the pendant on my necklace for the third time when Maxine appeared beside me, the tablet pressed to her chest like a shield.
— Okay — she said, in a tone far too calm for someone who had clearly already run through ten crisis scenarios in her head. — Before we start, quick rules.
I rolled my eyes, but smiled.
— Maxine, I promise I won’t declare eternal love to anyone live.
She gave me a long look.
— That wasn’t what I was going to say… but thank you for bringing up that possibility.
— Maybe I will, then.
I huffed a laugh and crossed my arms.
— Go on.
She slid her finger across the tablet screen.
— They’re laid-back, but they like honest answers. Nothing too rehearsed. If you don’t want to answer something, you can joke and dodge. No controversy, no dates, no specific names.
— No specific names — I repeated, raising an eyebrow. — You’re taking away everything I have.
— If you’re going to use names, be smart.
I tilted my head, thinking.
— Any surprise questions?
Maxine hesitated for half a second. A terrible sign.
— Maybe about your career, creative process… and personal life. But nothing invasive.
— “Nothing invasive” is a very relative concept for podcasts, I murmured.
She smiled sideways.
— Trust me. And remember: breathe before answering. You do that when you’re nervous.
A producer approached, headphones hanging around his neck.
— Two minutes, S/n.
I nodded and took a deep breath. The ambient noise felt louder now: footsteps, muffled voices, the faint hiss of microphones being tested.
Maxine rested a hand on my arm.
— It’ll be fine. Be yourself. People like that.
I looked at her, a half-smile forming.
— That’s exactly the problem.
She laughed softly.
— It’s your greatest strength.
The hosts appeared on the other side of the studio, waving enthusiastically. One of them gave a thumbs-up.
— Ready?
I walked to the couch, feeling the cold leather under my hands as I sat down. I positioned myself in front of the large microphone and took a deep breath.
— Ready.
The red light turned on.
🎬
— Funny how “balance” has become rare — he commented. — It seems like people either want to be carried… or want to carry someone.
The other host chuckled softly.
— And that doesn’t really have much to do with age, right?
— I don’t think it has anything to do with age. A guy can be fifty years old and act like a teenager. I think the point is acting like a man without needing to prove anything to his buddies.
Both of them widened their eyes at me. I kept my lips pressed into a straight line. Maybe I was giving too much of an opinion about men on a podcast hosted by men.
— But that’s my opinion.
I added quickly, glancing at Maxine, who was watching me with her eyebrows raised. Was that good or bad?
They exchanged a quick look — less shock, more “okay, that landed.”
The British host smiled slightly.
— That was very clear. And honestly, it’s an opinion a lot of women have nowadays but don’t say out loud.
The American host nodded, resting his forearms on the table.
— And very honest, which is rare.
He gestured lightly.
— When you talk about acting like a man without needing to prove anything… that’s maturity. And maturity doesn’t always come with age.
The British host followed naturally:
— Which brings us to another conversation that always shows up, even when no one plans it…
He tilted his head.
— Age differences.
— Does that matter to you? Or does it depend much more on the person than the number?
The atmosphere stayed attentive, no pressure.
— I don’t mind, as long as it’s healthy.
They looked at each other again, now with that “okay, we get it” expression.
The American raised his hands in surrender.
— Alright, rephrasing before we get cancelled.
The British host cleared his throat, holding back a laugh.
— Top three men — he said theatrically careful — you wouldn’t mind having an age gap with.
He raised an eyebrow.
— Hypothetical. Public. Family-safe.
— No explanations needed. Just… names.
The American added, already laughing:
— We promise not to get you in trouble.
— That’s a lie. But we’ll try.
— I can’t do that.
I smiled, my cheeks flushed.
Both reacted instantly — but in different ways.
The American opened his mouth, feigning shock.
— You can’t?
He clutched his chest dramatically.
— This has never happened on this show.
The British host laughed quietly, leaning on the table.
— We’re being silenced.
I said, half-smiling with amusement, and he shot a quick glance toward Maxine before looking back at me.
— But okay — he conceded, raising his hands. — Let’s take the elegant route.
The American leaned forward, genuinely curious now.
— Not names. Characteristics.
— What would those three men have in common for age to simply… not matter?
— Well… usually dark-haired, maybe a mustache — not mandatory — and, wow, I don’t know, you might find my answer boring but whatever, I’m the guest…
I said, speeding up a little and smiling peacefully at the end, sinking back into the chair.
— If he’s there for me when I need him, without making me feel like I’m… bothering him or anything. If he’s fourteen years older than me but that’s the case and I want it — I accept.
I said, raising my hand as if swearing an oath.
The studio reacted instantly.
The American let out a low “oh—” while laughing and shaking his head.
— Okay, first of all…
— Fourteen years was very specific.
The British host smiled to the side, resting his elbow on the table.
— And said with impressive confidence.
— Zero hesitation. Zero guilt.
He gestured in the air.
— But the point wasn’t the number. It was “without making me feel like a burden.”
The American nodded, more serious now.
— That’s someone who knows how to be present without making you ask permission to exist.
— That’s the point.

This whole episode was therapy disguised as casual conversation.
After the last podcast I went to, my social media was exploding and there I was in
yet another interview, which now felt much more comfortable.
The room was smaller, with fewer people, and everyone there was
— Hello! Today we have a very special guest. We’re going to talk about everything: projects, routine,
personal life… everything! easy to communicate with me.
The host and director of the segment that would be released on YouTube spoke from behind the camera,
where I was framed with a white background behind me.
— It’s great to be here.
I say quietly but audibly, with a shy smile on my face. All eyes on me
always made me like this until I felt comfortable enough to make jokes.
— What are the next projects you’re excited to show?
— Lately I’ve been connected to some roles and I think soon I’ll be able to share
the news that I think most people will like about a literary adaptation that is
coming.
— How do you take care of your hair? Any secret hair care?
— I always use heat protectant and lots of hair oil.
I answered, touching my hair and now smiling at the camera with a whatever face.
— What’s your exercise routine? Gym, yoga, running?
— I try to run 3km every day and I do Pilates three times a week. To make up for
everything I eat.
I shrug.
— What’s your favorite food?
I open my mouth and smile, biting my lip.
— Probably parmegiana.
— Relationship status?
— Single.
I make a face while looking at the camera as if they were pulling
a prank on me.
— Have you watched Stranger Things? Who’s your favorite character?
I raise my eyes to the camera and to the people behind it and smile while letting out
a low, frantic laugh.
— I love the…
I bring my tongue to my left canine while smiling, not looking at the camera.
— Murray. He’s funny.
— Which apps do you use the most in your daily life?
— Letterboxd, Spotify and TikTok. I should stop using TikTok.
I add.
— What books are you currently reading? Any favorite?
— I’ve been reading the Chestnut Spring saga, my favorite at the moment.
— Joe Keery… a lot of people are asking you about him, what do you have to say?
I let out a loud laugh and cover my face with both hands. I smile at
the question.
— You are horrible people.
I shake my head negatively and shrug.
— I don’t know him and he probably doesn’t know about my existence in this world.
I laugh a little, lowering my head.
— Why do you think that?
— I know he doesn't read comments, that deprives you of seeing a lot.
I said, shaking my head slowly.
— I know a bit about his work and I don’t know anything about his life besides the fact that he makes some songs that I like and that Steve in Stranger Things is a very well-performed character. He seems like someone nice and who gives good hugs. That’s my perspective on Joe Keery. That’s all I have to say.
— Favorite song or artist you can’t stop listening to?
— I’ve been listening to Noah Kahan a lot, I’m obsessed with the vibe of wanting to live
that his songs convey.
I sigh, getting excited just thinking about his songs.
— A self-care moment you never skip.
— Sleeping.

JOE KEERY DOESN’T EVEN KNOW 😭
I was sitting in my armchair, the phone to my ear, waiting for Maxine to answer.
— Hey! — her voice came in excited. — Have you seen it? Djo started a live out of nowhere!
— Okaaay and…
— Don’t play innocent, I know what’s going through your head.
— Nothing is going through my head, Maxine!
— Don’t go in, it’ll cause an uproar.
— No way — I said quietly. — I’m just going to watch from another account… but from what I’ve seen here, people are going crazy, at least there are sane people saying that he doesn’t even know I exist.
— Oh my god… — Maxine let out a loud laugh. — Guys, he’s just playing guitar and you’re freaking out!
— I know — I confirmed, smiling.
Djo started a live playing guitar. He doesn’t say anything, he just plucks the strings with that calm of his, focused on the music. I lean back into the chair, looking at the screen, and I can already see that the chat is chaos.

@Jules:
She´s definetly a shifter!
The theater’s low, pulsing lights made everything feel a little more intense. The sound of the crowd mixed with the deep bass that announced the show was about to start.
We came because one of my friends is obsessed with his music. So it was me, three friends, and two guys — all excited and with that first-row nerd expectation. We bought the tickets, got into the crowd, and I quickly realized that, even trying to blend in, some people started to recognize me. I adjusted my black skirt and fixed my red top as we passed by a few people. I heard a scream from a little way off and turned over my shoulder to see what was happening. Then, two girls came running toward me, eyes wide.
—OH MY GOD!
One of them screamed, barely able to breathe from excitement.
I stopped where I was and smiled at them, trying not to look scared or overwhelmed.
—I love you! I can’t believe you’re here!
The other said, holding my arm as if she wanted to make sure I was real.
—Nah, I love you.
I said, laughing softly.
One of them discreetly pulled her phone out of her pocket.
—Can I take a quick picture?
She asked, with that shy, nervous fan voice.
—Sure! Just do it quickly before I disappear into the crowd.
I joked, tilting my head a little for the photo.
While they were taking the picture, the first girl leaned in to whisper:
—You’re going to see Joe too, right? He’s… wow, perfect.
I smiled lightly, trying to seem casual:
—Yes, I’m excited. My friend loves his music, made everyone come.
—But it’s not a huge effort, right.
One of them said, and I smiled.
—None.
After a few seconds, they said goodbye with waves and huge smiles, running back into the crowd. I stayed for a moment, watching as they blended in with the other fans, laughing nervously and excitedly, and then I started walking again, feeling the weight of the energy in the whole place start to pull me forward, until I got close to the barrier.
—I got a guy to get us up front.
My friend said, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward them.
—You really want to go up to the…
Before I could finish, I was at the barrier and the lights started flooding, signaling that the show was about to start.
My friends pulled me to stand between them and then pointed the phone at my face.
—What’s it like seeing the love of your life on stage for the first time??
Sophie shouted at me, and I laughed loudly.
—Let’s see if he’s really all that.
I joked, looking at the camera, and they laughed.
The lights dimmed for a moment and the sound of the guitar filling the space made my heart race. The people around were screaming, jumping, but everything became a little blurred as my eyes fixed on the stage.
—Oh my God…
I whispered to myself, raising my eyebrows as my friends laughed and got excited beside me.
The girl next to me kept looking at me with that face of someone who couldn’t believe I was there.
—He’s so hot!
I shouted to my friends, laughing with them.
I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself, but every note he played made me shiver from head to toe. It was impossible not to feel everything, as if each chord went straight to the heart.
As the show went on, one song in particular sounded different live and made me go quiet, putting my hand over my mouth while I watched him focused.
—He’s so surreal!
I shouted between laughs, hypnotized by his voice.
—Answering if he’s really all that or not: he is!
My friend said, pointing the phone at me and recording me like I was a child looking at a candy toy, then filming Joe singing.
—I think she’s fallen for him.
My friend recorded her and Sophie, both smiling.
—I think she’s fallen.
My friend laughed, filming my face red with excitement and fascination. Sophie leaned beside me, still holding the phone, trying to capture every moment of Joe on stage.
—No, look at this!
Sophie whispered, pointing at him with wide eyes.
—She literally doesn’t blink when he plays… it’s hypnotizing!
I couldn’t take my eyes off him, her fingers still filming my reaction and then alternating to the stage. Each chord made me jump with excitement inside, and the sound of the crowd mixed with the music put me in a trance.
—Seriously, can you feel this? It’s insane!
The girls started laughing at my exaggerated reaction, but they were just as involved as I was. A little later, someone nearby whispered:
—Wow, she’s completely melted.
And it was true. I couldn’t even hide it; my hands trembled slightly holding the phone, while I tried to record that surreal moment without losing my breath, without taking my attention off him for a single second.
Two songs later, he bent slightly, grabbed a cowboy hat that was at the edge of the stage, and put it on. The moment seemed playful, but the energy of the crowd exploded instantly.
—Save a horse, ride a cowboy!
I joked with my friends, but the people around me who heard also shouted along, almost jumping in place, letting my voice be heard through the crowd.
The whole audience responded, shouting along, and I couldn’t help myself:
—Save a horse, ride a cowboy!
I repeated, laughing loudly, completely surrendered to the excitement of the moment.
It was at that moment that he looked in that direction, my direction, in the middle of the crowd. His gaze met mine and a subtle smile appeared on his face, almost imperceptible, but I saw it. My heart raced.
I laughed loudly, covering my mouth with my hands.
—He found me… he really found me.
The girls next to me started laughing and nudged me slightly:
—You literally screamed at the right moment, he saw you!
—Holly shit.
I murmured, still looking at him, now adjusting the cowboy hat with that casual way of his, and I felt like time had stopped for a few seconds.
He adjusted the cowboy hat, turned to the crowd, and made that “king of the show” face, but my eyes were fixed on him, and he clearly noticed. For a moment, he paused what he was doing, tilted his head, and shot a direct look at me, raising an eyebrow in an exaggerated, almost provocative way.
—I can die in peace now.
I whispered, smiling wide.
Then he made a small gesture with his hand, as if daring me to scream again, and the crowd around didn’t even seem to notice, but I was completely hypnotized.
My friends laughed and nudged me lightly:
—He’s joking around with you!
—I know… I know.
I murmured, eyes fixed on him, unable to look away. Every note he played now seemed like it was just for me, and that ridiculous cowboy hat only made everything more surreal.
He smiled lightly, went back to playing the guitar, but continued glancing at me from time to time, as if enjoying my reaction at the barrier. I felt a mix of nervousness, excitement, and… something I couldn’t define, but that made my heart race faster with each gesture of his.
Two songs later, he finished a slower song and stepped back from the microphone, looking at the audience. He grabbed the cowboy hat again, now with that mischievous smile that only he can make.
Before I could think, he walked lightly toward me with the hat in his hand, as if about to play a prank. My heart raced.
—What…?
I whispered, unable to look away.
And then, with all the theatricality possible, he placed the hat on my head, adjusting it perfectly as if it had been made for me. The crowd around applauded, but I could only laugh and cover my face with my hands, totally embarrassed and thrilled at the same time.
I said a curse in Portuguese, and he gave a quick wink before going back to the microphone.
He pointed at me as he started to switch to the next setlist. My heart almost jumped out of my chest, but I couldn’t stop laughing. My friends were recording, laughing, and nudging me lightly:
— He just...
—I know.
I answered, laughing, unable to take my eyes off him. —My God…
As he started the next song, the hat still slightly crooked on my head, every gesture of his felt like a little silent conversation just between us. Every note, every contained smile, every eyebrow raise was a tease, and I could barely wait to see what would happen next.

@joeloverfan: This is official… she’s totally fallen for him, and everyone saw 👀
@blushqueen88: OH MY GOD her vibe + Chateau + hat = total chaos
@indiefan88: I’m already imagining Joe looking at her now thinking “she’s my favorite fan” 💀
@Stephanie: I need that close-up on her eyes, someone save me
@joefanworld: My God, she didn’t even blink kkkkk Joe must have noticed
@randomviewer444: That look on her face saying “my god he’s perfect” is killing me
I woke up in Chicago to the muffled sound of traffic outside and the feeling that my heart was still beating to the rhythm of last night’s drums. The hotel room was bathed in a comfortable dimness, but the light from my phone, forgotten next to the pillow, kept blinking.
I fumbled for the device, my fingers still a little numb — probably from gripping the barrier so tightly while watching Joe. When I unlocked the screen, my stomach did a flip that made me lose my breath. There was a direct message notification. From @djotime.
I sat up in bed, feeling the sheet slip beneath me.
@djotime: Can’t tell if you were enjoying the show or horrified by the performance. Was everything okay down there?
My cheeks burned instantly, that full-on “blush” fans always mentioned in my interviews. I took a deep breath, trying to channel the “country girl” who doesn’t get shaken by internet noise. I couldn’t look like a desperate fan, even if inside, that was exactly what I was.
I bit my lower lip, a habit I knew gave away my nervousness, and started typing:
@s/naguilera: Honestly?
@djotime: always.
@s/naguilera: It was one of the most energizing shows I’ve ever been to in my life. I was not okay.
@djotime: you’ve been to a lot?
@s/naguilera: no. But I’m sure of one thing when I say it.
@djotime: good to know you liked the show, Cowgirl.
I laughed out loud and flopped onto the pillow.
@djotime: that sounded wrong, sorry.
@s/naguilera: I was the one screaming things like that a night ago, we’re even.
@djotime: soo, about the hat, keep it, it’s yours now.
I glanced at the corner of the room, where the accessory lay on the armchair. It was surreal to think that just hours ago, he had placed it on my head in front of a crowd in Chicago.
I bit my lip, determined not to let the conversation die there. If I wanted someone “functional” who knew what he wanted, I also needed to show I wasn’t just watching life happen through a mirror.
@s/naguilera: Have you heard the saying about the hat?
@djotime: what saying?
@s/naguilera: I’ll tell you someday then.
I smiled to myself as I saw the “typing…” bubble appear and disappear several times. I knew exactly what I was doing. On the podcast, I had been clear: I like mystery, but I like someone who takes action. Leaving him curious was my way of saying I wasn’t just the girl who got hypnotized in the front row.
The phone vibrated with his reply:
@djotime: “Someday”? That sounds like a promise that there will be a next time.
@djotime: First you steal my hat, now you leave me with a riddle.
@djotime: If I show up there in 40 minutes, will you tell me the saying, or will I have to beg?
I ran my hand along my neck, feeling heat rise to my skin. I was being bold, maybe more than usual, but there was something about the energy of Chicago and those messages that made me want to test his limits.
@s/naguilera: Only if you beg as well as you look good on stage.
I tossed the phone onto the bed and stared at my reflection in the hotel mirror. “S/n, what are you doing?” I whispered to myself, but a mischievous smile betrayed me. I knew exactly what I was doing. I wanted to see if that man, who ruled the stage with a stockpile of cowboy hats and an indie-mystery aura, was as “functional” and decisive as he seemed.
The phone vibrated so fast it made me laugh.
@djotime: Challenge accepted.
@djotime: 39 minutes now. And get ready, because I don’t usually fail when it comes to putting on a good show… or getting what I want.
