not to riddlerpost repeatedly on main again but y'know how before gotham!riddler killed the chemistry professor in s3e15 how the riddler got his name but then the guy couldn't answer the riddles so in typical riddler fashion he just starts throwing a temper tantrum? there's this specific 'NO!' that just screams dano!riddler to me (I know gotham (2014) technically came earlier than the batman (2022) but the riddler interrogation scene in the latter is, well, a full scene of the riddler throwing a tantrum and had much more 'NO NO NOOOOOO's. anyway that's beside the point you know what I mean) but I think it's just so interesting that we have all these different versions of the riddler and these two specifically are almost polar opposites in terms of aesthetics when adopting the riddler persona - the gotham one being a showy, BTAS-reminiscent dapper gent while the 2022 one is more of a rugged, unrefined, very DIY-y zodiac-killer style guy but then through these little mannerisms you can see they're technically still the same guy. and especially when you view them out of the riddler persona, or before they had the riddler persona, they're both just a sad nerd guy who believes that society failed them and underappreciates his intelligence, hence the need for committing crimes just to be noticed. anyway thanks for coming to my ted talks there might be 81292987393 more of these

Edward snaked his cold, bony hands around your waist and down your hips, grabbing at the softest parts and closing his eyes tightly as he did so.
“You’re cold as ice, baby…”
He gripped harder at your hips and leaned you back to him, eventually cupping your tits in both hands as he smiled and moaned as he sniffed your perfume on your neck.
He swayed you back and forth in his arms, in the same rhythm as the muffled rock music playing from a distant room. You pressed your ass to his crotch in a not-so-subtle way that made him hiss through clenched teeth.
He turned you around, passionately yet sloppily kissing you, which in the moment made it so much hotter - he was so desperate just to be able to touch you.
He got down on his knees slowly in front of you as he brought his hands down to your ankles, admiring your pantyhose and sparkling heels, truly a statement piece that nicely complimented the short satin dress you were wearing.
“Edward, I-“ You said, stifling a moan. You hadn’t ever seen him like this, you were usually the one to make him come undone.
He looked up, with his sly signature smile.
“What is it? Is there an issue..?”
You could see the concern in his eyes, the poor guy afraid he’s failed at women again, but that was quite the opposite.
“I…I want to make this moment last forever.”You said, bending down to his level.
He smiled and didn’t even take a moment to hesitate before pushing you gently and straddling over you, nibbling your neck as he got closer to your ear, his hot breath tickling as it went up your neck.
“Be a freak like me, too, then.”

Ed was disrupted from his thoughts when his name was called with a rush of excitement. With a slight jump, Edward tucked his well worn little black notebook into his pocket once more. Only he was ever able to make sense of the messy garble of words and scribbles. He turned towards the source. "Ed!" You cried out again and excitedly ran up to him. You took his hands tightly and began jumping up and down. "Itsy is a boy!" Edward grinned. "Hip-hip-hooray! Did you know house spiders are more commonly male because they search for a mate and the females stay in one place?" Edward rushed the fact out of him, as though concerned he'd lose your attention or he was driven by a compulsion to get it out of his system. "Wait really? I thought there'd have been more females than males in the spider population in general-given some feed on males after mating." You tilted your head. Ed always liked that about you. You always had time for him. You didn't seem to pity him like everyone else or make fun of him. Strangely enough, there were no alternatives nor an in-between the two. Although he noticed you were treated differently too because of your interests.
Harvey Bullock was the personification of a lone wolf after all the years he had on the force. However the last person he wanted to seek help from was Edward Nygma. "Hey, Ed, do you have anything else on the bullets of the case we were talking about with Gordon?" Ed smiled, excited and begging for approval. "What's everywhere but nowhere, except where something is?" His eyes gleamed with excitement as he grinned. "Tell- not ask." Harvey replied sternly. You were annoyed almost immediately but tried not to make any big deal. The last thing you wanted always a disheartened Ed feeling further discouraged by conflict. "Nothing!" You said quickly with a smile towards Ed. "The answer is nothing!" You said again more pointedly towards Harvey. He sighed and rolled his eyes. "You need professional help, Nygma and you," He turned his attention to you. "you're an enabler." "I'll keep that in mind." Your response laced with a hint of sarcasm.
A shrill squeal turned a few heads as Kristin Kringle shot up from her seat, backing away from the desk she sat at. Few could pin point whether she was staring in horror at the desk or the floor beneath it. Officer Dougherty and his friends chuckled. "Oh come on, Kristen! It's only a little spider!" Dougherty teased. "It's not funny!" She insisted. "Step back, I'll kill it." He shook his head, rising to a stand. "No!" A voice cried out in protest. You rushed towards the scene. "What's the deal insectozoid?" Dougherty groaned. It was a pitiful name that didn't bother you anymore. Ed got 'Riddle-Man' and you got 'Insectozoid'. Apparently it was deemed strange to befriend Ed. It was even stranger to care and like insects. You didn't like Officer Dougherty. He wasn't a man you could even be civil with. Something about him was off. Very off. Many couldn't see past his a pretty smile and a charming attitude but you couldn't ignore it. You avoided his gaze when you hurried to the desk. There, walking down the leg of the desk and onto the floor was a spider of fairly decent size and definitely made others squirm with the length of the legs. You gently scooped it into your hand and covered it, shielding it with your body. "I don't understand how you can do that so easily." Kristen shuddered. "They don't mean any harm. Spiders are scared of you, more than you are of them." You replied quietly. She shivered again. "Insectazoid to the rescue!" Dougherty smirked. "Although tone down the loving on it, eh? It's just a spider. It doesn't know anything." You glared. "The spider isn't the only one." You muttered. "What was that? Did you say something?" Dougherty leaned forward. "I didn't say anything." You murmured. "I'm taking it outside." As you began to walk away, you heard other officers chuckle to themselves. "What a weirdo!" Dougherty, jabbed an elbow into his friends side as they laughed. "Might have to keep an eye on that one...make sure they're not in love with the damn thing." "Stop it." Kristen's attempt to reign him in was only half-hearted. The whole thing was witnessed by Ed who frowned in the corner.
Later, Ed bounded up to you. "Go easy on me." You smirked pretending to be almost warily. "I'm frightened but others are the ones that scream. Your walls and ceilings are my floors. What am I?" "A spider." You smirked. "A house spider." Ed corrected, lifting a finger. "Isn't that part a given?" You asked. "Tarantulas can be discovered in homes within Australia. It absolutely does!" Ed nodded eagerly. "This is Gotham!" You giggled. "It broadens the horizons of which you can provide the fact!" Ed insisted. You scoffed playfully, waving a hand at him. "Fine, you win." You said, adoring the twinkle in his eyes at the sound of his victory. "Am I getting you your usual for Lunch, Ed?" "I wouldn't mind- if that's alright. I'll be sure to pay you back before you finish your shift." He said quickly. "No need, Ed." You shrugged. "I owe you for last Tuesday anyway. Lunch is in fifteen so try to be done when I come back yeah? I don't want to have to hunt you down again." You winked at him. He laughed nervously, flustered. "Of course! I'll keep an eye on the time!" He assured you.
Lunch became almost sacred to you since you and Ed began meeting up. The real and decent company was wonderful. Lunchbreaks became fleeting rather than counting down every minute for the hour. As routine, you provided. Ed was usually so engrossed in his work that his hour turned into roughly forty minutes. The man was passionate with everything he did- his work no less. Always hungry for a challenge. "I'd like to go for the medical examiner job. Guerra is just sloppy." Ed began as he expertly twirled his chopsticks and dug into the bottom of the carton containing his Chinese takeaway. A new place opened up a few weeks ago just a mere block away and so you were quick to try it. What became a favour when he didn't have time to try the place out for himself, became a frequent meeting. You raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?" You asked. Ed looked at you questioningly, searching your face for scrutiny. "What? Don't you think I'd be good at it?" He asked. You smiled. "Of course, I do. I don't think the job is ready for you. Not even a little bit." Ed smiled bashfully in response. "You're a good friend, (Y/N)." You stretched as you smiled smugly. "Keep sweet-talking me and you'll earn yourself another free lunch." You teased. "I've been earning them? This is the fifth, this week." Edward tilted his head. "Getting the wrong order from the Chinese does not count as an earned free lunch. This is your fourth. For the fourth time you've saved my ass in this job." You giggled. "If I recall- which I do- I stalled the Commissioner for fifteen minutes so he couldn't know you were fifteen minutes late from your lunch break." Ed pointed out. "I think it was earned." You balled up a napkin into a ball and tossed it at him. It bounced off his forehead making you giggle, covering your mouth as you tried to swallow your food. He snickered in amusement as he swallowed.
Things began to change when Officer Dougherty disappeared and Kristin Kringle seemed to see Ed a little differently. You didn't have any of the pieces, you knew that. Ed was too distracted to keep you up to date. It saddened you, day by day, the less you saw of him and when you did, Ed was jumpy. Spooked almost. You were worried and asked him almost immediately if something had happened. He'd have been convincing had he not stumbled over his words the first time. When you asked again, he seemed distant. He wore a polite smile, certainly. He was much calmer but something in his eyes got you thinking he seemed a million miles away. Thinking about something else or someone. He came to you once when Kristin ran off, breaking it off with Ed with only a note. Or so he said. Only when it was too late did you discover how many times Ed had lied to you. What really happened to both Dougherty and Kristin.
You were astounded, the way he clung to you when you offered a comforting hug for a heartbroken friend. He didn't meet as much for lunch, adamant that he was on a roll with a case or simply up to his eyes with work. In hindsight, you didn't see Ed being behind on work a possibility so why did you believe him? Was it the soft smile? The friendship you had built on trust- well, maybe on your end. You weren't entirely sure when Edward stopped being able to trust you. When the truth came out, he was put in Arkham and from there, everything spiraled out of control. Even indirectly, Ed made himself clear. Nowadays, he didn't appreciate that name. He was The Riddler. Only The Riddler.
You didn't expect to see him in the GCPD again but had little time to react as he pulled out a handgun and began firing. He got some- those caught off guard or who stayed to take him on, others escaped. You ducked when a loud shot pierced your ears, a thwack and the sound of breaking wood just by your shoulder. You had no idea who had fired at you or if it was intentional but amidst the footsteps breaking the silence, the Riddler emerged.
You dragged yourself across the floor, away from the man in green who slowly followed you. Gun trained on you, his gaze hardened on the gun as though irritated he hadn't shot you. He squeezed the gun tighter still to no avail. He stood over you, surprisingly silent. "Where's Lee?" He demanded lowly. You shook your head quickly. "Don't know...I wasn't here." He exhaled through his nostrils with a quiet huff as he sucked his teeth. "Well then..." He raised the gun to your chest. Ed, no...the Riddler, looked up at you. Your Ed was long gone. He wouldn't...he couldn't? That didn't seem right. No matter how you wanted to consider the man standing over you, he was no longer what he used to be. Yet you still pleaded quietly, hoping to appeal to something in him. "Please...you were my best friend." Your voice trembled. His gaze narrowed. "No." He said lowly. "I wasn't...he was." You missed him. You missed Ed to the point it hurt. It was as though a piece of your life was gone. You looked forward to work knowing he'd be there. "I admire your loyalty. It is foolish but of course, it is. You were loyal to him when he worked here." The Riddler seemed almost irritated and even seemed to pity you. He gazed at the gun one last time before gritting his teeth. He looked ahead, dropping his armed arm to his side and stepped over you. He didn't look back or even hesitate. He only mumbled to himself as he walked away. You watched as he went, eyes wide and heart racing. 'Not them.' It was a tiny voice in the back of his head that he almost missed. Ed didn't have the willpower to try and take over from him. The Riddler was stronger than he could ever be. Yet Ed seemed to fight this whether he was even aware of it or not. 'Not them.' It was like an annoying itch as the Riddler couldn't will himself to pull the trigger. Almost as though his hand a mind of his own. Refusing to consider this a defeat as he looked down at your pitiful state, he decided you weren't worth it. He stepped over you and carried on. However not before some irritated words for Ed. "That was always your problem." The Riddler muttered. "Too soft and no spine." He sneered with disgust and loathing. You were pathetic just as Ed was.
