The Wilson’s the rasputins and the markovs. I want to draw that but also I don’t want to draw 9 people
1. Oldest brother. Biggest flop, sucks and not many people really GAF abt him.
2. Middle brother. The nicest guy ever so sweet so lovely, the one the family was created around pretty much. Also they are the tallest, I don’t make the rules
3. The youngest sister, light hair and the fandom favourite with a very traumatic childhood.
Spoiler: very little. And we also need to separate what’s actually true from what’s just part of Tara’s cover.
Hey there, and welcome to another episode of LET’S OVERANALYZE EVERYTHING!
First time she is ever mentioned is in NTT #28, where we see Tara telling the Teen Titans that:
A) Her father is the ruler of another country;
B) Her mother wasn’t married to him;
C) Her mother died in childbirth.
Point A and B will later be confirmed to be true, as for point C… not so much.
Then, in Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #3 (Judas Contract finale), we have Brion confirming at least the first part of the story.
So, yes. Mistress, illegitimate child, all checks out.
But the "died in childbirth" part? That’s where things get shaky.
Because the third time Tara's mom is mentioned is also the first -and only- time we actually see her on panel (The Outsiders vol.4 #24).
Again, we get confirmation she was the king's mistress (or paramour, or whatever you want to call it), BUT she looks pretty alive for a woman who supposedly died in childbirth.
Aaand she seems to have red hair, which is… interesting. We'll get to that later.
Also, in issue #25, our darling girl twists a nursery rhyme into this:
Jeez, Tara… do you want to lie down? A paper bag to breathe into?
And that’s it for New Earth.
Which brings us to Prime Earth and—
WHO THE HECK IS THIS WOMAN??
It seems like she's trying to smuggle Tara out of Markovia when she's a child, and gets killed in the process. We only ever see her in Deathstroke vol.4 #27.
Let me explain why I don’t think this is Tara’s biological mother.
(Some of my darling mutuals have already heard me rant about this)
Genetics rant (bear with me)
Comics genetics are… simplified. Let’s be polite.
Usually, visual media treats traits like this:
If a kid has X trait, one of the parents had X trait.
It’s kinda like they’ve only studied Mendel’s first law and forgot the second altogether.
Enter the Markov family
We see Viktor Markov having brown hair, while his children have:
🤎 Brown hair (Gregor) - 🧡 Red hair (Brion) - 💛 Blonde hair (Tara)
The three of them all have blue eyes (except for Brion, who sometimes had green eyes in the early 2000s runs for some reason), so we can reasonably assume that comes from dear royal Papa.
But the hair color? Well, thanks to Mendel’s magic peas and visual media logic, we can infer that:
🤎 Gregor got his brown hair from Viktor;
🧡 Brion got his red hair from his mom;
💛 Tara got her blonde hair from her mom.
So black hair? Mmmh… not Tara's mom. 🤔
And by the way, if they wanted to imply that the black haired lady was her mother, wouldn’t the comic at least give us a tiny "Mom" speech bubble or something?
No?
Cool.
That’s the nanny. I will die on this hill.
***
So what do we actually know?
A) She was the king's mistress;
B) She was alive when Tara was a newborn;
C) She was American;
D) She was disowned and disrgaced (Tara's words);
E) By comic logic, she’s likely blonde;
F) She is said to be dead by the time Tara meets the Teen Titans.
And what don’t we know?
EVERYTHING ELSE!
When did she die? How did she die? How did an American woman even meet the king of Markovia? What was her relationship with Tara like?
Time for the tinfoil hat 🎩
My personal theory? She was the princes’ English tutor.
Which would:
- explain why an American woman was in Markovia long enough to have an affair with the king;
- give her access to the royal family;
- make the whole situation even messier.
If you’ve read this far, congratulations! 🎉🎉
You now also have a completely normal level of investment in the Markov family lore.
He wants to scream at him that he is the king and should get to wave a hand for there to be exceptions made for Tara. But he’s so tired, and he can’t bear the thought of it. “Will you come here, then, for the funeral?”
“I…My brother, you know I cannot.”
Something cruel and angry and desperately sad curdles in Brion’s stomach.
“I am king now. I cannot abandon my responsibilities for the dead.”
“You owe those responsibilities to the dead.”
“I know,” Gregor says quietly. “I miss him too.”
Our father would have brought Tara home, Brion barely resists saying. He does not know if it is really true. “As do I,” he says instead.
The Markov siblings have so many dynamics and they are all so chewable
We only get to see her interact with one of her brothers once, as Teen Titans and Outsiders had a crossover shortly before the end of her arc. The writer of Outsiders (Mike W Barr) had Geo-Force think well of her, and she, in turn, did not want him to fall with the Titans when she betrayed them. Marv Wolfman, the writer of Titans, DID NOT LIKE THAT and had her think hateful things about both her brothers in the run up to her end. He did NOT want her to be sympathetic at all (and still don't understand or care that fans don't agree to this day). Thus, the crossover issues are left out of all the trade paperbacks.
Hmm, im collecting the Outsiders run! I def have the crossover comic. I wonder if Terra gets mentioned much more by Geo or Gregor after she dies? I could SO go for some angst on their side.
I got bored while watching and started designing uniforms for the made-up countries in the YJ universe along with headcannons on their performance. And of course I started with Vlatavia and Markovia because I'm predictable and they are my personality right now.
Markovia
Warm greens with gold accents
When countries are met with crisis folkish-traditional trends start popping up in different sectors of life, including fashion. I like to think that during the political instability traditional embroidery has seen a resurgence, and that was picked up by the uniform designers with the faux-embroidery motifs
I do think that there was controversy surrounding the Markovian team leading up to the Olympics with people demanding that they were tested for active genes and making conspiracy theories about sneaking metas into the competitions but they still showed up
I have a feeling that historically they have shown up with a "we're just happy to be here" attitude, proceeded to get their asses handed to them, but still were cool about it
Not this year though, oh man, this year it's personal cause now other athletes are questioning their integrity due to the actions of their government, and no matter what the individual athletes' thoughts on that whole mess, they've got something to prove this year
And like, they kind of do?? I feel like they would get gold in some teams even but not really any in individuals and are lucky to manage a bronze but it's better than they ever have done and Markovia made that one gold their whole entire national personality for a couple of decades
I also feel like Tara and Gregor get super into watching the games but are kind of awkward about it given their recent exiles. They still watch all the events they can but stay in their rooms on computers to do it so the other Hub residents will just wake up to excited screaming at the early hours in the morning (time difference), knowing it is coming from the Markov's room, go in to check on them only to find the siblings faking asleep like kids that got caught up too late past their bedtimes.
Vlatavia
Cool Greens with silver and grey accents
The show doesn't tell a lot about Vlatavian culture but from the few pictures we've seen of the country it's been a dark academic wet dream so I figured any opening ceremony outfit that would be accepted by that aesthetic community would fit
Rationally I understand that heads of state don't really concern themselves personally with making the Olympic outfits but I feel like Perdita sent a single, short memo to Vlatavia's planning committee and was like "Give them arrow motifs now, don't ask why" and the poor intern that stumbled upon the email was not gonna question it
They do average in the games again, I feel like they are more winter Olympic powerhouses than summer but they show up and have a good attitude about it
Though they rock pistol shooting. Just have a shit ton of people who are concerning good at handling guns
Perdita is definitely one of the heads of state that sends a delegation to the games and stays the whole time. And since she's younger and most of the athletes are in their twenties I feel like she takes the two weeks to just like, hang out??? There's a video somewhere of her after the closing ceremony doing shots with the Vlatavian soccer team at the Olympic Village that she will use extortion to make sure the press never gets their hands on
I have a feeling that Vlatavia and Markovia had traditionally lived next to each other in the Olympic Village cause they get along, with similar cultures and limited political discourse that could start something, and so they get put together this year, and nothing changes. All of the returning athletes know each other and just hang out. So people have made YJTikTok edits with that one popular audio that goes "*inaudible screaming and chaos* Tone shift, grateful I'm grateful all the time" But it's just a video of the two countries's ambassadors screaming at each other over the refugee crisis-cut to the athletes practically sitting in each others laps at the cafeteria laughing and joking around. Very much giving siblings that are chill with each other while parents are going through a divorce in the room over vibes.
This was fun I think I'm gonna make more I just need to find more fake counties.
Markov family drama: It seems the Markovs keep on doing things the other siblings simply don't understand and don't communicate, and that keeps on leading to disasters.
"Tara," Gregor said, his eyes so tired. "I am not... upset."
"You are."
"I am," he confirmed. "But not...with you. Exactly. I just wish you'd thought before sneaking into Markovia. What if you'd been caught?"
She gave him a reproachful look. "I was trained well. I would not be caught."
She regretted her words the moment they were out of her mouth. Her two years of captivity and conditioning had become a matter-of-fact part of herself. She tried speak easily of them, because the alternative was too much to bear, and she could not afford to break like poor quality shale. It galled her brother. Her brothers. That was the worst of it, seeing the hurt she kept from her own eyes in theirs.
"It is my fault you are in exile," she said. "I owed it to you."
"It is not your fault. No matter what the League or the courts say. You are my family, Tara."
"Terra," she offered. he looked pained again.
"Is that what you wish to be called? Or is it another penance?"
She shrugged, and held out the box again. He'd refused it once.
"It is not someone's heart," she said, trying again for a light tone. It went over like granite.
"Tara, please do not joke of that." Gregor said. "I can't--"
"What? Imagine me with blood on my hands? I am not 13 years old anymore, Gregor. I am not the sister you lost."
"You are. I was going to say, I can't stand to see you think of yourself like that. Like a, a weapon."
"It's what I am," she said simply. "All the world knows it but you. And Brion."
"And Brion." Gregor echoed. "Tara, you are not. You are the jewel of Markovia. You will be again. We can sort this out."
"There is nothing to sort. This is how everything is."
"I cannot believe that. Did you see Brion, on your secret journey? Was he... did he look..."
"Lost. " Tara said quietly. "He looked lost."
"One more thing we Markovs share," Gregor said quietly. "All of us are lost." He finally turned his eyes to the box. "Alright. What did you risk your life to bring across the world?" He removed the lid. Dark soil filled the box, and the smell of it very nearly dissolved the stone in Gregor's throat that had kept him from weeping, all these weeks. He was not like his siblings, he had no meta-human connection to the veins of the earth. but he knew it all the same. How many times had he walked in his father's garden?
"A piece of home," she said, quietly. "Until it can be your home again."
"Our home again," Gregor said quietly, looking at the tiny blade of green and spot of flower petals peeking through the top layer. "All of us."
