Ok but Cliff Marlow somehow managing to get into Ilya's phone after the Tunameltdown in the middle of the Hollandry crashout, and getting Montreal Jane's number.

The entire Boston roster piling behind Marly as he types, trying to decide what to say that could save them because their captain has been possessed by the spirit or a soviet military trainer with knife shoes and if they are forced to make double bagskates again they will either puke or die or both.

So Shane Hollander wakes up one day to a message from an unknown number like "Hello Miss Jane ma'am this is Clifford Marlow I don't know if you have heard of me I am sorry to be a bother I'm just wondering if you could give my good friend Ilya another chance, I promise that whatever he did he won't do again, we will help we will teach him to cook and clean and do laundry and he will cook you the best sandwiches ever if you only give him a chance only if you want of course if it's not too much of a bother Miss Jane please and thank you" and he goes through the seven stages of grief in like 4 seconds before it's even 7am. They manage to add the link to a very big spa gift card that they all chipped in to buy because at that point they're desperate.

Rose really was meant to parallel Ilya in every way.

(edited to add:) as was pointed out in the comments, of course there's Rose's name - a flower, like Lily, but also literally the first syllable of Ilya's last name, and means the same thing. It's SOO deliciously inescapable; it had to have been intentional.

But like, even their very first meetings were so similar:

Shane already knows who they are and wanted to meet them.

A private meeting where they're not introduced by someone else or on display. It's not for appearances.

Shane starts off complimenting them.

They're not in the least starstruck by him.

They put something in their mouth.

They issue a hockey-related challenge.

From the comments: in the book, there's also a seafood connection. Ilya makes a tuna melt for Shane and Rose is eating cod fritters instead of french fries.

This is nothing that hasn't been said before, but yeah, there is real chemistry there. Shane does genuinely like her and gets along well with her. It's just not sexual or romantic. And if Shane was finally going to accept that he's not into girls, it had to be Rose, specifically because she's so perfect for him.

I just love how it was set up--from the very first time we see her, she's positioned in opposition to Ilya. Shane will never be able to stop comparing her to Ilya, and finding her wanting. The relationship was doomed from the start. But it was still necessary, you know? Rose changed the course of Shane's life. It's so cool.

(edited to add:) I love that Rose isn't purely symbolic. She does influence the direction of the story. I love that she was the one who broke up with Shane, was the one who gently, kindly, lovingly forced him to be honest with himself and also showed him that he can be accepted and embraced as he does so. But in certain ways, of course she's symbolic. She's so symbolic! She's the echo of Ilya. Her presence merely emphasizes his absence. He's haunting the narrative because Rose is possessed by his ghost! Ugh, I love it.

I really think the in-universe hollandry shippers spent years thinking they were winning or would atleast eventually triumph. I know they thought they were witnessing either a very devoted secret relationship or a beautiful slow-burn love story where Shane and Rose are endgame.

Because Shane and Rose would probably either not speak about their break-up publicly or say that it was because of their schedules and that they are still great friends(which is what they told other people). So they’re saying their schedules make it difficult to be together but they get papped together often enough that it is clear they make the effort to see eachother whenever they are in the same place if they can. And Shane is never with anyone publicly after that. We don’t know how public Rose’s other relationships pre-outing were but we know none of them lasted. If the public did know about them then that would give rise to the slow-burn theory “but look at how they always come back to eachother and they are clearly destined to be together because if not how can you still be so clearly happy and at ease with your ex? Listen they are so clearly in love look at how affection they are with eachother!” Honestly I could so see a published romance novel about a hockey player and an actress falling in love that is very obviously Hollandry with the serial numbers filled off. Do me a favor and imagine Ilya finding out about that and trying to convince Yuna to convince Shane they should sue.

And then Shane and Ilya are outed and the shippers discover another logical explanation for why Shane and Rose are so fond of eachother despite being exs. They also may discover that both the slow-burn and the secret relationship they projected onto Shane and Rose was actually real. It was just with Shane and Ilya instead.

Its pretty Obvious Shane walks a fine line with regard to the way he presents himself. Hes not a fighter, or 'traditionally male' in the expected ways seen in his profession. BUT youve gotta be SO ffr if that translates to him NEVER picking up girls. Yes hes gay. But from what weve seen the performance of heterosexuality is something that is integral to Shanes mask and safety in the league. THEREFORE I PREPOSE AN IDEA😤

Shane would 100% occasionally pick up a girl. He's captain, hes the star/ face of the league, at Minimum he needs that shield to protect him in locker rooms. (idcidcidc what happens in the show/book for this its so unrealistic). If hes seeing Ilya MAYBE 5 times?? a year??? with from what know? Shane does have a decently high libido, i can absolutely see this playing into why dude took nearly 10 years to firmly be like... yeah definitely gay (if he WAS occasionally pulling girls). The comphet went crazy, and the ONLY reference he had for a queer hockey player was Mr. Bisexual himself Ilya Rozanov. A person who genuinely enjoys both. Whereas Shane only enjoys Ilya (in his own words). Definitely could cause some additional confusion.

Now in my mind he's absolutely not having full penetrative sex. What he is doing is getting blow jobs/ hand jobs and returning the favor. And gaining a VERY lowkey impressive reputation as a great box eater. Shane is nothing if not goal oriented and the least he can do is use his fingers and mouth to equally reciprocate the favor.

This changes the whole 'girls, i never hear about you with them' convo Ilya has with Shane. Because Yeah, Ilya sorta KINDA has? but he doesnt know how true it is? and Shane has NEVER been pictured with a woman, never REALLY had rumors circulating online or any of the same things Ilyas gone through. Nor has he mentioned women to Ilya before.

BUT as I said👀 Shane baby got a reputation as a GREAT lay. he reciprocates, you'll cum, hes a nice respectful guy. 10/10 would sit on his face again. (hes not enthusiastic, just, VERY capable, and very focused which is fitting) and this has DEFINITELY gone through the WAG group chats so the players have 100% heard this and its gotten into locker rooms (but like HOW true is it? Ilyas TRYING to find out okay).

Hence the ROYAL crash out Ilya has over Rose Landry- because thats a HELL of a confirmation jesus Shane.

It also definitely makes it more understandable how Shane and Rose lasted as long as they did. Right up until Shane tried to hit a home run and struck out painfully. and Rose was like... babe that was GAY. which yes indeed. (this also leads into my rose landry made shane read the lesbian master doc as a comphet baseball bat upside the head... rose is a bisexual woman i dont make the rules).

AU where Rose realizes she's a lesbian while with Shane, having had basically the same experience as him, and goes to come out to him but he's just like. "Are you sure?"

She gets really mad, because what the fuck, but he backtracks and is like, "No, I believe you, but it's just — what your describing sounds sort of like liking both? Cause I think it'd be only natural to have more chemistry with the same sex, since you understand each other's bodies more. That doesn't mean anything."

"No, Shane, that's what having a sexual preference is," Rose says, a bit baffled, "That's what I've been trying to tell you."

He looks stunned by this, like everything he's ever known has been a lie.

It only hits her then, because she's been a bit preocupied with her own crisis. She suddenly remembered the other reason why their sexual encounters had been so awkward.

"Shane."

They are so stupid.

There is a lot to look at in the end scene of episode 4, and one of that lot that never fails to catch my eye is the reminder that Shane Hollander / Hudson Williams is a big fucking man. It's easy to forget when he's next to Ilya / Connor, who is also a big fucking man. But his hands on Rose in this scene 👀 The fact that, right next to one another, the top of her head just comes up to the top of his mouth when he's slightly curled up to tug his shirt off... HIS HANDS ON ROSE IN THIS SCENE. The way one looks bigger than her whole fucking head shot from the right angle... (I feel unwell.)

All my favourite stories are ones that really try hard to be lighthearted and fun but are inherently kinda fucked up and have really deep nuances and unhealthy relationships that aren’t fully explored. I fucking LOVE the Shandry storyline because there are so many things that make them the perfect friends for each other… but absolutely horrible partners in any other sense. The breakup scene is one of my favourites because the whole time both of them are like “nonono I’M fine what I really care about is yoouuuuu I’m doing this for you” while also both ignoring their own feelings and needs. I like my favourite characters to be in pain and I love thinking about how Rose is always sort of that foster girlfriend who has boyfriends before they find their forever homes. How she feels that none of the men she’s with are attracted to her. How she brushes off how these relationships affect her but will always stop it for their sake. I like how both Rose and Shane are child stars who experienced extreme skill at a young age and their bodies have never belonged to themselves since. I love thinking about how if they had stayed in that relationship, I think they would’ve absolutely ruined themselves and each other all because they cared too much. I just think there’s some very ripe characterization and parallels that is woefully underutilized. I think we should give them both guns.
