Goals Not Resolutions
What do you want to accomplish this year? I would suggest sitting down and making a list. Then make copies of that list. I usually have three. One written with my signature on the bottom, then I type it and keep a copy on my computer. The final copy is printed and put somewhere that I will see it often. Once I accomplish something on that list, I highlight it and/or check it off. At the end of the year or the very beginning of the next year, I review the list and everything that was and wasn’t accomplished. When I look at the things I didn’t accomplish, I sit back and reflect on why I didn’t accomplish each goal. This isn’t a long reflection, just like a five-minute reasoning with myself as to why I didn’t accomplish a goal. This step requires a great deal of honesty because most of the time the reason is myself. Now once I realize that I didn’t accomplish a goal due to my laziness, lack of pursuit, etc…I don’t shame myself. I just ask: okay, now what can I do differently in the next year to accomplish this?
Make your goal list as personal as you want to and read it every so often to keep yourself motivated. I promise you this will go much farther than resolutions. I have also learned that your goals should be SMART! And SMART goals are:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-related
I’ve been doing this for several years now. Year 2017 was the first time I reflected on why I didn’t accomplish goals by writing a small explanation beside each goal that wasn’t accomplished and I must say, it was helpful. It helped me visualize (because I’m a visual learner) exactly what I needed to work on. This year (2019) was the first year I’ve tailored my goals to be SMART. This helped me see that some of my goals were unreasonable and I was setting myself up for failure. Having SMART goals also helped me be focus on, not only what I wanted to accomplish, but how I was going to accomplish each goal.
REMEMBER: Everything doesn’t have to be a “huge deal” just make them tailored to you. Your goals, your year, your way.
**This is a post that will post every year because it is something that I do and promote every single year. However, the content changes as I learn ways to improve my goals. I have 12 definite goals for 2019. This is the shortest goal list I’ve ever written. I realized that giving myself too many goals was also a set up for failure because I simply didn’t have the time to do everything I wanted to do. If I’ve learned nothing else, I’ve learned that this process holds you accountable with yourself. And if you follow the process, you will learn. I’m open to sharing my 2019 goal list if the people want it.
Also, I’m posting this on the last day of January to say that it’s okay if you didn’t get that “new year, new you” motivation on January 1st. It’s never too late to start! There’s still 11 more months in this year. You can still give it the best you! Feel free to like, comment, share, and repost!
