What Animals Percy Jackson Characters Would Be

Percy Jackson - Harbor seal

Seals are all watery and cute and stuff, but also they are violent predators, but they're adorable. Also, I saw someone draw Percy with seal eyes and it was mildly terrifying. Harbor seals live by New York.

Annabeth Chase - Snowy owl

Duh. Beautiful, smart, graceful, delightfully absurd, but also a bit unnerving. (look into an owl's eyes for too long and you'll see) The snowy owl just fit best for Annabeth, I think.

Grover Underwood - Alpaca

No seriously, I think he'd be an alpaca.

Nico di Angelo - Black cat

He'd have you believe that he's solitary, emotionless, and a bit evil, but he's really a super caring sweetheart. Still a bit evil, though. Also, I headcanon that the di Angelos look just a little bit like cats.

Thalia Grace - Maned Wolf

Maned wolves are this confounding disaster of an animal. Its not a wolf or a fox. Its closest living relative is the bush dog. They smell like weed. Its genus name means golden dog in ancient greek. They sound nothing like how they look. Trust me. I only picked this because I saw a video of them walking around and the vibes fit.

Luke Castellan - Coydog

I saw someone draw some the blond boys as dogs and they made Luke a coydog and it was funny, so we're going with it. (a coydog is a coyote dog hybrid, to be clear)

Jason Grace - Belgian Shepard

Everyone says he's a golden retriever or husky, which isn't inaccurate, but it doesn't feel quite right. He would be a guard dog. Very sweet, loving, and loyal, but will absolutely go wild if needed. (this isn't super talked about, but he beat Krios, the titan, and tore down his throne with his bare hands) I chose this breed because I like how they look.

Piper McLean - Cottonmouth

So, I wanted to do a parrot or something, but they just weren't the vibe. The snake song thing felt more important than the charmspeak. I chose the cottonmouth because when they open their mouths, they look really funny and the vibe seemed to fit. They look so distressed and I think Piper would make memes of them.

Leo Valdez - House mouse

Its not what you'd think, but hear me out. Small, agile, fast, way smarter than you'd think, gets into literally everything somehow. Its perfect. I originally thought a gecko would work, but I feel like the mouse fits better.

Hazel Levesque - Black forest horse

I had to do a horse. Hazel is the horse girl. If she wasn't a horse, the multiverse would collapse in on itself and God himself would come down from the heavens to smack me upside the head. I chose this horse breed because I saw it and . . . that mane is gorgeous. I never thought I'd be jealous of a horse.

Frank Zhang - Elephant

At first, I thought he'd be a bear, but an elephant feels more accurate. First, he's smart. (all the characters are pretty smart, but we don't really talk about Frank) Second, he's generally a gentle giant. He's incredibly caring and protective of his loved ones. But like elephants, people seem to forget that he will fight you if you give him a reason and he will win. Both of them are very sweet, but they're not pure sugar. (trust me, elephants do not think you're cute) Also, Hannibal.

Reyna Ramirez-Arellano - Greyhound

I don't have much of a reason. Let her hang out with Aurum and Argentum.

Octavian - Cockatoo

Listen, look up a video of a cockatoo screaming. They act exactly like this little idiot. They also probably sound similar. I just love cockatoos.

Will Solace - African fruit bat

Hear me out. Bats are extremely resistant to disease. Cancer, specifically. See, humans have this gene that suppresses cancer, but in a lot of cancer cases, this gene misfunctioned. Bats have two of these genes, so they rarely get cancer. Unlike a lot of animals their size, some bats can live for 30-40 years. Will's a medical guy. Scientists are trying to use bats to cure cancer. Also, Ebola.

Lester Papadopoulos - Sopping wet cat

He is a sopping wet cat and I love him. If you haven't read toa, please do. I promise its worth it. He's glorious.

Meg McCaffrey - Honey Badger

Just watch the Casual Geographic video on honey badgers. Trust me, it fits. They're also super cute.

The final taxidermy mouse I made for Christmas last year! And I actually remembered to get decent photos of her. Though I left some wire wrapped around her paws for shipping because I am terrified she’ll fall apart. Prayers to USPS to handle her gently. Stay tuned for whether I have to fix her in April when I visit my friend.

Though she’s the last of this first set of mice, she’s actually the reason I started making stripper mice. I just wanted to do a handful first to get practice… but then they didn’t turn out awful.

My friend also learned specimen prep at our college’s museum, and she’s always wanted a stripper mouse. She considered trying it when her pet mouse passed from Cancer, but decided it wasn’t something she actually felt comfortable doing with her pet’s body (however you mourn and process death is personal!), so I’ve been wanting to make her a mouse for a while now and it was a good excuse to try taxidermy.

Her mouse’s name was Sebastian, so I’m calling this one Viola… even though they’re not really twins. Sebastian was white.
