emotions are just internal sensations and involuntary physical reactions. you can feel no emotion and still feel like something is wrong or unjust.

there is more to "feeling" than emotion. you can say feeling and thought are two different things but it doesn't change how similar or intertwined they are in practice.

more often than not when we say we feel something, we mean we're experiencing something internally. the only times people aren't experiencing something internally is when they are dead.

emotion is only an aspect of internal experience. it isn't always present, and it doesn't have to be for someone to be a full person with the ability to decide for themselves what their values are.

people with less emotional experiences are just people. not broken for it, not dangerous for it, not subhuman for it. many people have had times where they feel no discernible emotion, including at times they usually would or are expected to.

there is no moral difference between that and a minimal emotion baseline.

unrelated to the theme of the blog, but in one of your posts, you mentioned that masculinity should be treated with kindness, not necessarily empathy because not everyone experiences that. i wanted to look into the experiences of people who dont experience empathy and similar things. is there a similar blog (like this-is-somethingsomething blogs or others with similar gimmicks) that looks into those kinds of things?

I recommend looking into tags like #hypoempathy, #low empathy, and #no empathy.

For those who are unaware - Empathy is where a person has emotional or physical mimicry of someone else’s experience, such as seeing a person injure their leg and feeling that pain in one's own leg, or seeing a person grieve over their loved one and feeling a mimicry of that grief. Empathy is not necessary to be kind towards others, as one does not need to understand someone in order to choose to be kind towards them.

Sympathy is a feeling of concern or pity towards someone else.

Kindness is how you behave towards people.

Empathy and sympathy aren't always a good thing. For example, a person with high empathy might feel super uncomfortable around someone who is grieving because of their empathy, and become emotionally unavailable or unhelpful, because they unintentionally make that person's grief all about themself. Another person with high empathy might freak out at even the smallest of injuries because they feel as though they themself have been injured, and thus not be useful in a medical situation.

People with neurodevelopmental disabilities (such as autism), cluster B personality disorders, and/or behavioral disorders often (but not always) have low, no, or fluctuating empathy.

It's important to not misuse the word empathy, because it leads ableists to judging neurodivergent people as cruel or vindictive simply because they do not have that emotion.

Why do people feel the need to clarify the words of queer mascs when we speak on our oppression?

Why, when we make a post about how its bad to generalize men, do people jump into our reblogs, dms, and inbox saying "youre valid but also you should be more clear that its FINE to hate BAD men"

Why do I need to be more clear about that? Why, when I defend innocent men, do I actively have to say I hate men who aren't innocent? Why am I being nitpicked?

Its the same energy as saying "Don't generalize trans women as predators" and people responding "But remember that trans women can be predators, and no demographic is exempt from being predatory!"

Or "stop generalizing people with cluster B personality disorders as abusers" and people replying "thats valid but also you should be more clear that its FINE to hate BAD people with cluster Bs!"

Or "Stop treating empathy as an innate human emotion, hypoempathetic people exist" and people replying "It's fine as long as they don't use their lack of empathy to hurt people!"

I'm so tired.

Why do I always have to justify hating the bad ones when I am trying to support the normal ones (aka the majority of us)?

"Basic decency" is such an easy and more accurate phrase to use. Decency is a choice, a behavior - empathy is not.

Treating empathy as a choice, rather than a neutral emotion that some people do not have the ability to feel, is inherently ableist towards individuals who are hypoempathetic or non-empathetic due to neurodevelopmental disabilities, personality disorders, behavioral disorders, mood disorders, etc.

I also dislike the "basic human" phrase in general, because it puts this weird connotation that bad humans are no longer human. It's dehumanizing - dehumanizing bad people isn't a "progressive" thing to do.

(Not to mention, as a non-human myself, it has weird connotations for alterbeings.)

As a person with NPD (narcissistic personality disorder), I believe Charlie is a communal narcissist.

Communal narcissists are narcissists who wish to do charitable acts in an attempt to be praised, liked, and of course to be right.

And it makes sense. Her father is literally the sin of pride. Having NPD is laid out for her genetically.

Looking at her pattern of behavior, a few things I've noticed are:

1- She puts her own ideas first and foremost and dismisses everyone else's thoughts and feelings (especially Vaggies). She thinks she knows best in every scenario and can't take no for an answer until it blows up in her face. 2- She continuously makes apologies but never changes her behavior, her apologies ring very hollow. 3- She makes people feel like they can't be mad at her because she doesn't mean to hurt them. 4- She pushes people way too far to reach her goals by guilt tripping and peer pressuring. 5- She will jeopardize everyone else for the sake of proving herself right. She's so obsessed with being right that she is destroying her relationships.

She wants her dad to approve. She wants her mom to approve. She wants hell to approve. She wants ANYONE to approve of her. And she doesn't realize that she's pushing everyone away. I think this will lead to a massive falling out and confrontation of her pattern of behavior.

This has always been clear to me, but becomes even clearer in the latest episodes (S2, EP 3 & 4.) Her obsession with being right and doing something good has led her to:

-Make Pentious's survival more about her hotel working than the fact that he's alive. (Her response was "I told you so!" and not "I'm so glad he's alive!")

-Put Angel in a scenario where hes faced with his abusers.

-Risk killing or severely injuring Angel and Husk.

Does this mean she is evil and intentionally cruel? No. Narcissism isn't an "evil disorder", it's just a disorder that results in some pretty poor behavior and lack of understanding for people sometimes.

Does this mean she doesn't love her friends? Also no, she clearly does. She just struggles majorly with empathy.

AFFECTIVE EMPATHY: feeling other people's emotions. like, if someone is crying, you get sad. If someone is angry, you get angry. if someone is really excited, your emotions match that energy. etc.

HYPEREMPATHY: you are very very sensitive to the emotions of others and even non-intense emotions will frequently greatly affect your emotions.

LOW/NO AFFECTIVE EMPATHY: you almost never take on other people's emotions just bc they're feeling them. low-but-not-No empathy may experience "exception" people or feel empathy for really intense emotions, or large groups of people all feeling the emotion.

NORMAL is somewhere in between but hard for me to describe. probably just like... people's feelings influence yours, but not to the point of frequent distress or impaired functioning? like they definitely have an impact on your emotions but not an Intense one unless their emotions are also quite intense.

if you are AUTISTIC and have comorbidities, feel free to say what those are. if you are ALLISTIC/NON-AUTISTIC, feel free to clarify if you are completely neurotypical (no mental disorders or disabilties) or if you have something else (ADHD, bipolar, ASPD, OCD, whatever).
