Hi there! I'm a huge fan of the geiko world and have been for several years. My favourite geiko is Kikutsuru of Miyagawacho, however I haven't been able to find any updates on her of late. I appreciate that she may be quite private, but all I know of her is that she belongs to the Hanafusa okiya, is the little sister of the now retired geiko Kikumaru and older sister of the new maiko Kikusana. To be honest, I don’t know much about most of the Geimaiko’s private lives. Most of them seem to be very private people, as you said yourself, and don’t want people to know too much about their private lives.
However, I did some research, and this is what I found out about her:
She is the younger sister of the retired Geiko Kikuryū and the older sister of Maiko Kikusana.
She dyes her hair brown, which is unusual for a Geiko and shows how modern Miyagawacho is. She received some criticism for this online, but I just found that mean. She can do what she wants with her hair and I personally think that it suits her very well.
In July, there was a rumor about her taking a break due to being pregnant, but this turned out to be untrue and was spread by an unreliable source.
Kikusana is Kikutsuru’s first and currently only imouto.
She is 29 or 30 years old, probably 30 though, as she has been seen wearing mostly subdued kimono lately and only Geiko who have been active for more than 10 years or are over 30 are allowed to do this.
She had her erikae on the 25th of June in 2007, however, her misedashi date is unknown. It was likely 4 to 5 years prior to her erikae.
Miyagawacho is very proud of teaching their Geimaiko a lot of all arts, so there often is no clear distinction between tachikata and jikata Geiko. However, Kikutsuru is primarily a dancer, and a very talented one. She participates in both of Miyagawacho’s odori every year and often gets bigger roles.
A lot of people have stated that she is indeed very private and chooses to withdraw from the public eye, so you were right! I still feel like she is underappreciated, though.
However, that doesn’t mean that she is unsuccessful! She is a jimae Geiko and was able to help finance Kikusana’s misedashi! She is actually one of Miyagawacho’s most successful Geiko, but due to the fact that she is a more private person and photographers tend to prefer Maiko and Geiko in their first to third year as their models, us outsiders often get the wrong impressions about a Geiko’s popularity.
I have also read that she is rather small, but that is hard to tell just from looking at pictures, so that might be wrong.
That was all that I found! I understand why you like her so much, she is a very beautiful woman and has a very elegant, sophisticated demeanor. I developed more of an interest in her when researching for this, I’ll try and find some nice pictures of her and post them for you!
