Whenever Lance or someone else is in danger, the paladins never choose to help Lance first, and Lance... well, he learns a lot.
Initially, he even tries to argue about the blatant disrespect, but there's always someone who tells him, "Really, Lance, how self-centred can you be? We had to choose between saving you and an entire planet. It's not our fault you ended up in that situation."
At a certain point, Lance internalises all of this. He realises that if anyone is expendable, it's him. So, why not use him?
If someone has to die, wouldn't it be better if it were him? This leads him to be careless about his own safety, especially if someone else is in danger, and it takes far too long for anyone to notice.
When someone finally notices, Lance has been kidnapped in the princess's place a dozen times, shielded Coran and Pidge a hundred times, and stayed behind for Shiro, Hunk, and Keith so many times he can't count. But he's still got the scars and a very protective Blue Lion.
And when the team tries to talk to him, Lance simply shrugs, "You said it: I don't have to be self-centred. There are people more important than me."
Horror doesn't begin to describe the team's reactions to hearing words they'd used so casually again, words they'd all benefited from without even realising it.
Keith will have to work VERY hard to prove to Lance that he is worthy to be saved, and that they were the ones at fault, not him. Above all, Keith will have to work hard to make up for his mistakes because he was the one who messed up the most.
("It was between you and Shiro, Lance. I will always choose Shiro first.")
A klangst AU where lance dies And before his death, the last thing keith told him that "I just dont wanna be stuck here for eternity with lance".
If anyone looking for klangst this for them.Idk why but I literally cried while making this( I like to torture myself).😭😭
they aren’t in love.
but those late nights where keith is having nightmares, and lance somehow has a second sense of when they’re happening, they manage to find each other and lance doesn’t leave him alone until his breathing evens out and he starts snoring those obnoxious snores.
but whenever a mission is over keith is always checking up on lance more than the others, scanning his body for any kind of injury that he isn’t telling them about because keith knows lance and knows he would do that.
but when lance is feeling homesick, keith is the one he goes to in order to feel back at home.
but in those little moments when no one is around, and it’s like they’re the only people in the universe, both of their hearts are drawn to each other.
but when lance comes to keith about his feelings for allura, there’s an ache in his chest as urges him to go after her that he doesn’t know how to deal with.
they aren’t in love.
but keith kogane realizes he is definitely in love with lance mcclain.

We're finally at the end! Sorry it took so long, life is hard lol hope you liked it :) also if you don't like sad endings.... Do not fear, this is not the REAL end of Keith and Lance's story! To find out, you can read the rest of the story on AO3 🫶🏼
More context under the cut:
Keith slowly forgetting everything about Lance over time, except for his bright blue eyes.
And Lance slowly forgetting everything about Keith, except for his stupid hair.
From Hero's Heart on Ao3.
Keith tightened his grip on the controls, feeling the Red Lion's resistance as if the machine itself recoiled from his touch. The leather of the gloves creaked under his fingers, the pressure sharp enough that his knuckles ached. Behind him, Krolia leaned forward, her breath warm against the back of his neck as she peered through the cockpit glass. "It's been so long since I've seen Earth from this angle," she murmured. "Still just as blue."
Outside, the planet hung suspended against the black, oceans swallowing most of its surface, streaks of white cloud swirling like fingerprints. Keith swallowed hard, his throat dry. It should have been breathtaking, but all he felt was the Lion's growl reverberating through the console, a warning hum beneath his palms.
"It is beautiful," Krolia said, softer now, almost reverent. Her fingers brushed the back of his seat, but she didn't press further. She knew better. Keith exhaled sharply through his nose, jaw clenched. Red's resistance wasn't just mechanical, it was personal. The controls fought him, sluggish and unresponsive, as if the metal itself recoiled.
