“The show brings in no experts to speak on the exotic animal trade and it’s devastating effect on these species populations. It ultimately feels like the tigers are reduced to background fodder for the bizzaro actions of Joe and his menagerie of off the wall characters”
“And while we see snippets of Joe’s egregious actions, the editing seems to constantly redeem him in one way or another. Sure he neglects the animals, but that’s only because these lawsuits are running him dry, sure he abuses his partners and staff but he’s deeply lonely and yelling is just one of his quirks, sure he publicly threatens to Murder and Rape Carole but she’s always trying to shut his business down and besides she’s a murderous hypocrite.”
The social media accounts of these people have grown in popularity. #FreeJoeExotic trended on twitter. A bunch of people want to go to these “zoos” and are hoping the GW Zoo will reopen. I’ve seen many people framing Joe Exotic as a sort of kooky, rugged individualist. People talk about the series as a funny “white-trash” spectacle more than they do the problems of animal abuse, labor abuse, domestic abuse. Even if the murder for hire charge was false, he would still be serving a long sentence based on the 19 other counts he was charged with, mostly EPA violations.
If the filmmakers thought they were making something meaningful, they are abject failures. I don’t think anyone walked away from ‘Blackfish’ wanting to support Sea World.
