Anyone interested in joining a potentially very weird DnD game?
I'm trying to get more experience as a DM and I need one or two more people for a kind of experimental concept.
It's possible it will not work and just kind of suck.
It's an experiment and DM practice for me, so I won't be heartbroken if it's not a years long campaign.
This is low pressure, low commitment.
Hell the bit even kind of works better if people drop in and out lmao.
The experimental concept is that it would be play-by-post and you would never directly interact with the other players or even know for certain which characters are the PCs.
You'd only communicate with me, and then I would narrate what happened at the end of the round once everyone had acted. I would still be encouraging a lot of RP and character interaction, you'd just never be completely certain if you're talking to an NPC or a PC.
Ideally, I'll figure out a way you can chat ooc as well, with the understanding that you try not to reveal yourselves.
But this is not the end of the weird mechanics!
The setting would be a homebrew world I initially conceived for a YA novel. The nation of Leander is an expansionist colonial empire at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, but with magic. Sort of.
The thing is in this world, using magic requires you to sacrifice literal years off your life span. The level of a spell would be roughly how many years it costs you to cast. You'll be keeping track of your expected average life span (I'll roll secretly for your exact life span) and if you burn out, you die. Kaput. No roll necessary.
There are ways to defray these costs, such as binding a Familiar, a being from the plane of magic who's then forced to split your magic costs with you. You can also sacrifice magic items to use the stored magic within them rather than your own. Things like that.
Still! The rich and powerful, while they very much want the benefits of magic use, would really rather someone else foot the bill.
So the lower class of Leandran society are compelled or coerced into trading literal years off their lives to put food on the table. If you're thinking maybe there's some anti capitalist themes, you're not wrong.
Magical potential varies, with lower value casters generally finding themselves in manual labor or the military. Casters with exceptional potential may be lucky enough to find themselves in a kind of magical finishing school, intended to teach them both the effective use of magic as well as the simple domestic skills and etiquette expected of a valet or personal servant, pejoratively known as a "mana pawn," to the Leandran aristocracy.
The players will begin in one of these schools.
Races and classes are obviously pretty restricted for this setting. The world is human exclusive, but you don't necessarily have to play a human. You could also play as a Familiar, who could have the attributes of most any race. Or as a Warforged variant construct, built using cutting edge arcano tech to protect the casters. If you have an idea for something else, I'm very open to figuring something out.
Most people would be playing casters, but again I'm open to figuring something out if that's not your thing.
I've intentionally held back on digging too much into the world building or story yet, as I very much want to create those around the player characters.
I am *very* story focused, and I value a collaborative relationship between the DM and the players over an antagonistic one. I prefer to handwave things like spell components. You'll probably want to avoid getting into a lot of fights anyway given the risks of spell casting, so don't expect a ton of combat, but expect what combat does crop up to be pretty challenging.
Since it would be play-by-post, players could respond throughout the week as they have time for it, but I'd also like to have a 2-4 hour session either once a week or once every other week, to help keep things moving and keep everyone engaged. We can hang out in VC while players DM me their actions for each round.
One of the reasons I'm interested in this format is that I'm not very good at improv, but I *am* a good writer. This format would hopefully allow me to narrate and DM in a very controlled way that plays to my writing strengths rather than thinking on my feet.
If you're interested, reply or dm me or send me a carrier pigeon, whatever works for you
