Ah, so it IS an American thing! And they really work? Would’ve thought you’d just end up with slightly warm cookie dough. (we never had anything like this, only regular play kitchens)

Hey, I saw on your download post for the recolored CuriousB desert terrain in high res, that you offered to make other terrains high res, but also said the process is pretty simple. Could you point me in the direction of any info or a tutorial on how to do that (for someone who has literally no idea what they're doing). I'd like to have a high res version of the original CuriousB desert and the Maxis default lush terrain, if that's possible. Thanks for your time, and for all you do for TS2!

Hey there! Hope you don’t mind if I answer this publicly; I’ve received a few similar inquiries since I’ve done high-res terrains and always answered them privately, so if I do this publicly I can just point to it, if needed, in the future. :)

So! There is no tutorial that I know of. I could make one, though. Maybe I’ll make a tutorial while I make a terrain. 

Just to say, though, the Maxis terrains are kind of problematic to make high-res, as I discovered when I tried to make a color-edited desert one. The reason is that the original texture images are only 128x128 pixels in size, just a little bigger than a Tumblr avatar. To make the high-res textures, you have to stick together a bunch of those original textures to make larger ones, at least 1024x1024 in size to qualify, IMO, as high-res. So, you need at least 64 copies of the 128x128 original texture. The problem with the Maxis textures is that the neighborhood-view images, especially, also have a lot of pattern to them and when you do that sticking together, the pattern forms stripes, which just look bad on the terrain. You can attempt to overcome this with enough hand-painting...but then you’re not exactly using the Maxis terrain anymore. :) So...Yeah, problematic. The solution would be to re-paint (by hand, because simply enlarging the original will make it blurry) a larger version of the Maxis terrain first, and then you could stick together fewer copies of that larger version, which would reduce the “striping.” Unfortunately, that sort of painting is quite beyond my artistic capabilities. :)

But the CuriousB ones are all definitely doable because her original texture images are at their smallest 512x512 in size, so they are already fairly high-res, certainly in comparison to the Maxis textures, which is why they look a lot better than Maxis’s in the first place. To make them even more high-res, you only need to stick together four copies of them, 16 if you wanna go really high-res...but at that point you’re eating a lot of texture memory in a game that has known texture memory processing issues, and that will slow down the game and/or cause pink flashing more quickly. So, you reach a point of diminishing returns. Super-high-res might look really pretty for just picture-taking, if your machine/video card can handle it, but for actual playing where you add in high-poly objects and especially hugely-high-poly hairs and stuff, it’s probably not worth it.

ANYWAY, that’s probably way more than you want to know. :) So the gist: I think I’ll make a high-res unedited CuriousB desert terrain and while doing so take the pics for a tutorial. That way, you’ll get half of what you want and you and others can then make whatever else you/they might want. :) I’ll add this (both the terrain and the tutorial) to my requests list. :)

It’s only something that happens with Bigfoot. I’ve never seen that wording on the pop-up, though. Usually it’s something like “Bigfoot’s coworkers were so impressed with his work they got him a present!” Maybe it’s different because he’s working for an owned business? I don’t know, but the thought of bringing home the company dishwasher is pretty hilarious.

I dunno....He could be mistaken for a mime, which would keep everyone away quite effectively. (Mimes are creepy, man. Almost as creepy as clowns...)

No silly, mimes wear berets, not toques. *Very* distinct difference. I personally think mimes are cool, and both they and clowns get a pretty bad rap. But I’m in the minority, I know. :P

The striped shirt, hat, and gloves are a bit of a giveaway. You'd think these burglars would get arrested more often, just walking around like that. ;P

I would question the bylaws if police were allowed to arrest people just for wearing funny clothes! But it’s definitely an odd get-up to rob someone’s house. I know there are defaults to make it more believable, but I’ve always liked the cartoon villain look of that outfit. (Now gimmie a default with the same colours but updated textures and less weird shoes and I’d be all over that like ketchup on fries!)

They're hungry, poor things, and all they find to eat is flowers. If you put a dog bowl out they'll eat from it.

That looks to me like the destroy/scratch/chew animation, not the much calmer munching one eating flowers. But maybe they do the former before the hunger bar gets too low? This would be a good lot for a few pet items, actually. Next time I edit it I’ll add a little stray pet corner.

Unfortunately Faucet is a bit of a doofus, so it’ll take a while for that to sink in.

Yay, Ferdy! I love how much detail you put into your sims' characters; they're so lively. That first fact, ow, my heart. And part of me kiiiiiinda wishes I could lock him, Kiera, and Ethan in a room together for half an hour just to see what happens. ;P

First, thanks. :) Second, I can guarantee those three in a room together would result in one big slapfest. Until it turned into a big fight cloud with one of them invariably booing the other two.

I know everybody loves him, hell I love him, but here's this little part of me that is still pretty pissed at him about number 5 and all that is related to it.

Interesting, I was picking up more vibes toward Ethan as the popular favourite, and Ferdy losing a few points due to his history with his brother, though my vibes may be a little outdated. With number 5, he *could* refuse to talk about him because he misses him so much it hurts to mention him. No? ;)

Yes and that's the cool thing, with your Sims I always feel like they are really that way (because it's based on what they do in game), instead of a made-up head story tacked onto a pretty face. Your Sims feel real. :D

When did you start playing Sims?

2007-ish? I was babysitting my neighbours’ handicapped son with his older sister, my best friend, (I was asked because my mom works in special ed... I have no idea why they thought that would qualify me, an eleven-year-old...) and she showed me that game she’s been playing: The Sims 2. I was hooked, borrowed the base game and bought Nightlife so I could play it on our ancient family PC. Played that on that one until Sims 3 came out and I wished for a laptop for Christmas so I could play Sims 3. Played it for like 2 months and then went back to Sims 2.

Have you been playing consistently or do you have breaks inbetween?

More or less consistently. There were some breaks whenever my laptops died, but I always came back. I don’t think there’s ever been a break that was longer than 2-3 months.

Do your family & friends know that you play The Sims?

Some do. My immediate family knows, of course. I don’t run around advocating that I play the Sims, but when I click with someone (or am close friends with them)... sure, it does come up.

Do you spend more time in build or live mode? Why?

Live mode, for sure. I’m slowly getting better at building and decorating, but for a long time, I just couldn’t stand it.

Do you play with supernatural creatures (like Vampires, Werewolves etc.)? Why not?

Well, there’s a witch, two plantsims and an alien in Middleground, so you tell me.

No, but really, I love playing the supernaturals. I think they add interest to the game. I’m especially fond of the vampires in this game (I like the concept of vampires in general- the more traditional ones, at least), mostly because they were the first supernaturals I’ve been introduced to. Although their immortality might pose a problem in multigenerational gameplay...)

Do you have one specific family you play with all the time (like a legacy of some sort) or do you rotate between a couple of households?

I got into rotational play pretty early on. I was enthralled of all the stories about huge cities full of Sims (I also got into the community pretty early- the German one, that is- although I’ve always been more of a lurker). I’ve tried legacies at times, but could never stick to it (what do I do with the spares?).

Do you like to create your own neighborhoods or do you play with the existing families? Tell us about your progress :)

I like not having to build a neighbourhood, but sometimes I do. Most of the time, though, I take an existing neighbourhood and just modify it to fit my needs.

I almost always use existing Sims. Whether that means playing in premade neighbourhoods like Veronaville, Strangetown or even neighbourhoods like the amazing Viper Canyon by meetmetotheriver, or just use premade Sims, like didilysims extracted College Sims, the Pleasantview townies (like in Middleground, duh), or even downloaded Sims like hambergersims that have a connection to the premade Sims. I’m just a big fan of Eaxis genetics, it seems.

Do you create custom content? If so, what keeps you motivated? (If not, would you like to? What stops you from learning it? For players that don’t use mods, why do you stay away from CC?) 

Not really. I sometimes upload a Sim or a house (very sporadically). I’m able to delete sandals from a Maxis mesh, but that’s about it. I think it would be a pretty cool skill to have, but I don’t really have the time to learn it. I’d much rather play the game.

If there was one piece of CC or (if you play without mods) one piece you wish the developers implemented, what would it be?

Only one piece, huh? Hm... maybe a subhood for supernaturals (that counts like one piece, right?). Someplace where they can do things connected to their supernatural state?

What other expansion and/or accessoires pack do you wish the developers would have come out with?

Uff... generally speaking, I would love if there was more generational stuff. It would be nice to have more activities for the different ages. I’ve read this on a couple other Sims memes and I can only agree with it.
