One of my personal favorite headcanons about William Afton/Springtrap is that when he kills people he would absolutely use dad jokes and puns on them right as he leaves them to die. Like. He incapacitates you and throws you in a freezer for slicing later. And just as he’s about to close the door he wears the most cocky, shit-eating grin and says “Have an ice day” then laughs like a fucking moron as he slams the door and locks it because he thinks he’s so smart and funny and the only reason you’re left horrified is because not only are you about to freeze to death, but you were captured by a fucking LOSER
Fuuuccckkk I think one of my theriotypes might be a red fox now which is crazy bc my main one lately has been a fucking bnuy. William Afton & Michael Afton ass dichotomy going on here. FUCK
YOU! fnaf headcanons. about anything . i just wanna hear them :3c
HAAIII MUTUAL !!! :3333
OKAY SO!!! I went kinda crazy with this one LOL but basically I've compiled a (slightly chaotic) bullet-pointed list of specifically timeline-relevant/vital plot beat headcanonz 2 start off since my brain is easily scrambled & I wanted 2 keep this post somewhat focused HAHA. You & anyone else reading this are more than welcome 2 send me additional asks if ur curious abt ultraspecifics &/or a particular aspect of FNAF that I may have thoughtz on !!
Also-also, I've kept this condensed 2 the first 4 gamez since I don't rlly have much 2 say abt the main plot beyond that. SL is pretty similar 2 canon in my mind, same with Pizzeria Sim !! Help Wanted & Security Breach not so much since I've got my own completely revamped storyline in mind abt them !! >w< Will probz make a separate post at some point abt that if anyone is interested !! It veerz way more into AU-territory but hey, what FNAF fan doesn't love a good AU?! :333
Anywayz, without further ado, I give yew...
MOSAIC'S LOOSE FNAF CANON!!!!
(Under the cut since this wound up being like over 3k wordz HEEELLPPP)
FNAF 1
So for starters, I’m of the mind that this location, while a version of a previous pizzeria that was likely open in tandem with the diner, didn’t last very long at all – perhaps a few months or so. My most conventional headcanon, considering the limited power and general lack of upkeep.
I like to imagine this location didn’t actually close down only because of lack of business or the stench coming from the animatronics, but rather because William realized he was probably going to get booked once someone inevitably investigated the smell.
On this note, newspaper clippings in the security office did actually identify that the smell was coming from the animatronics (if my memory serves me correctly), & so people often call into question why the cops didn’t. Y’know. Look there. Well, for one, they’re cops. However, I headcanon that the other big reason they didn’t bother looking was because William was bribing the police in some way. It would be doable, given he was a man who owned arguably one of the most successful businesses in the country in his universe (and trust me, it would be). It would also explain the fact that someone was indeed caught & convicted through taking a look at camera footage of someone wearing the Springbonnie suit to lure children to the backroom.
It obviously wasn’t William who was convicted, but someone was caught, meaning not only did he bribe the police, but he framed someone. Part of me likes to imagine he decided to be petty & frame some random employee he hated, but I’ll admit there’s another part of me that finds the idea of him framing Henry fascinating. The latter is more difficult for me to buy into though.
Another pretty common reading, but I definitely think the night guard in this game was Michael Afton. In my head, this game was him making an ultimately failed attempt to free the souls of the MCI kids, but it wasn’t a completely wasted trip; I think he’s actually the one who put all those newspaper clippings up on the wall as a conspiracy theory board of sorts in order to make sense of the past events that occurred when he was too, um... busy to notice. Right.
(“Busy” as in grieving his siblings. Yikerz.)
FNAF 2
SO I like to think, actually, that the toy animatronics never actually had any “facial recognition” features to begin with. Of course, for the glaringly obvious reason being that there was truly no way something like this could have been developed in the 1980s (not in THIS sense, at least, let alone this tech be in the hands of a children’s pizzeria owner of all people), but also because I like to imagine William & the PR crew were probably just making shit up to get everyone off their backs about disappearances, HAHA.
The dayshift suddenly becoming available was obviously a result of The Bite of ‘87. I will NOT be told otherwise!!!!!
I think Michael was a night guard here too, but I like to imagine he sometimes came in during the day, as well. Either way, he & Fritz were bound to meet at some point, & I like to think those two were gayasses before... well.
Weirdly enough, though, I don’t think Fritz died. In my mind, anyway. Or at the very least, not right away. The idea floating around in my brain fluids is that Fritz had to stay in the hospital for a while to make his initial recovery, before ultimately being sent home, provided he had some sort of caretaker, since he most likely would have contracted serious brain damage from that experience. So from that point onward, Michael would have taken over his dayshift. I like to think they saw each other a lot after that still though, & that Michael was a generally well-liked person in town before he was scooped (see: everyone in town waving at him all friendly-like in the Sister Location 8-bit cut scene thingy).
ALSO !!!! In my mind, Fritz was the Bonnie bully <3 But back to FNAF 2.
SORRY NOT SORRY MR. UNDERWEAR FETISH CAWTHON MY TOY CHICA DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT!!!!!!! SHE WEARS CUTE PINK OVERALLS AND SHE’S FEATHERY AND A DYKE !!!!!!! SHE & TOY BONNIE ARE TRANS BUDDIES !!!!!! DIE !!!!!
Yeah, speaking of Toy Bonnie, he’s trans & gay : 3 Also Toy Freddy is a trans bear (the gay man + the animal). To me.
MANGLE MY GENDAFLOOID KINGQUEEN!!!!! I forget if this is actually canon info or not, but in my mind, Mangle was originally a Foxy variant modeled after Funtime Foxy who was designed as a sort of?? Take-apart toy for the younger kids?? William you are so fucking stupid.
Also Toy Foxy is gay. I like to imagine William made every Foxy variant gay because he knew Michael was gay & just decided not to let him know he knew. Trans also, but Michael knew he knew about that one.
I like to think the Puppet was gender-neutral & started leaning slightly more towards she/her pronounce once Charlie began to possess her : ( Other than that, they also use they/them & it/its. I like to imagine it finds it/its in particular comforting, in a weird way. They feel less human after everything she was put thru & the responsibility it had to shoulder (i.e., helping the other MCI children move on to the afterlife, etc.), but it weirdly helps her not dwell so much on the rest of the human life that she didn’t get an opportunity to live. :((((( Will defo be talking more about them in the FNAF 3 section.
Phone Guy mentions Foxy being his favorite animatronic, & I like to imagine he was a co-worker &/or higher-up that Michael frequently socialized with : ) Although, when he mentions being unsettled by the Puppet animatronic, Michael probably cringes to himself. Not sure if, in my mind, he knew by this point if Charlie was possessing it or not. He probably did, or at least found out thru his shifts there.
FNAF 3
I like to imagine Phone Dude is the manager, actually. No particular reason, I just think the idea of a weirdly laid-back manager who’s probably high 24/7 is funny as hell considering this is supposed to be a horror attraction that’s grossly making light of a horrible set of tragedies. LMAO
SPRINGTRAP. SPOINGTARP, EVEN. BOY, DO I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT HIM. I might have to make a separate post solely for my headcanons regarding him, so in this post, I’ll just focus on big stuff that comes to mind that’s relevant to the main timeline of events!!^^ For starters, everyone complains about his “jumpscare” (or rather, the lack thereof), but honestly, I think it’s fitting as-is. That is his son. He looks SO different. But he knows that’s his son. But he’s been torn apart & rotted beyond recognition. Rigor mortis has long set in by now. And yet, he’s living. Without the need for any kind of springlock suit or other vessel to hold his soul. I like to imagine Springtrap just walking up to him is actually him just... checking him out, if that makes any sense. Of course, he inevitably kills Michael due to all the pent up feelings he’s held towards him, after everything. But, y’know. That’s his son. It makes sense to me that he wouldn’t do so right away. Plus, I also like to think he’s fascinated by how different their experiences of “coming back” are, before the jealousy, rage & other pent up emotions set in.
Similarly, I think his relatively slow approach towards Michael is likely out of recognition & confusion, considering, again, Michael is fucked up SO badly. But a father recognizes his son. That, & predator-like instincts have just become so ingrained in him at this point that it probably hardly registers for quite a bit there that the way he’s going about this could be in any way unsettling LMAO. But he’d probably LOVE to know how freaked out Michael is by him. Too bad he’s acoustic /sillay
Predatory behavior became ingrained in his subconscious long before he was springlocked, but it’s especially evident when combined with the more animalistic tendencies he possesses as Springtrap. In my mind, a lot of this is the result of just how much isolation can affect a person’s psyche/spirit, ESPECIALLY given the amount of time he was trapped in the safe room. 30 years with nothing to entertain you but some rats & maggots? Buddy. If his mental state was bad before, he was probably a NIGHTMARE for Michael to deal with in this game.
Due to the air quality/gas leaks that were so present in this game (of which he constantly had to keep an eye on), I like to think when Michael saw Springtrap & recognized his father’s mannerisms coming from it, he thought it was a hallucination at first. The mannerisms, I mean. After all, I don’t imagine he knew exactly where his father was. He expected he might find him somewhere in his attempt to free the MCI kids from their torment, but I highly doubt he expected their reunion to be anything like this. I’ve seen a lot of interpretations where they have actual conversations before Springtrap tries to kill him, & I think those are super fun!! However, I actually like to believe that they wouldn’t really..? Do any talking? Not face-to-face/directly at each other, anyway. In my mind, they’ve always been sort of distant from each other despite wanting to be closer before the Bite of ‘83 happened, but due to that already existing distance (which only grew until it twisted into one-sided resentment on William’s end as time wore on), it was just kind of hard for them to ever be intimate with each other like they originally wanted to be? So, to me, a lot of the emotional moments that happen between them at this point in time would be very sub-textual. Silent. Saying a lot without saying anything at all. But because no real words are exchanged, & neither of them understand each other as much as they both still want to deep down, they’re completely misinterpreting each other. If that makes any sense at all HAHA
Probably also doesn’t help that they’re physically both torn up & rotted beyond recognition so facial expressions defo aren’t the go-to method of communication here (especially for Springtrap).
This is defo an out-there one (I think? I haven’t interacted with the fandom in a while lol), but I feel like William & Michael have a shared psychotic disorder of some kind. Particularly, a sub-type (described in the provided link) that results in one person in a relationship of some kind possessing some sort of psychosis (William/Springtrap) whose delusions are shared with the other (Michael). I imagine this was most prevalent way back in Michael’s childhood when William was home more, & gradually dissipated as he got busier with work/distanced himself from his home life more. This definitely resurfaced quite a bit during their little FNAF 3 reunion, with how visceral the reactions on both ends would probably end up being. Along with the gas leaks, I like to think this is part of why Michael was seeing “phantom animatronics”, a hallucination that Springtrap was likely already experiencing that was then shared between the two of them. Despite the distance between them, they’re just so... intrinsically linked, in my mind. Both on a mental & spiritual level. Not to mention the spirits of the MCI kids likely confusing Michael for William
Springbonnie/Springtrap had a dewlap & I will not be convinced otherwise ! ^_^
Wearing the Springbonnie costume provided William with a sense of... safety. Invulnerability. So it’s my belief that this was part of the reason he immediately rushed for the suit upon encountering the spirits of the missing children, despite how clearly air headed that idea was. He didn’t laugh because he knew he’d possess the suit or anything, but rather, because wearing Springbonnie simply makes him feel invincible.
I’ve personally always thought that the suit was something that he used as a coping mechanism before the Bite of ‘83, but as his mental state spiraled following that event, so did the effect that wearing the suit had on him; what once simply served him theatrical swag & confidence/bravado gradually began to also cause heightened arrogance & unhealthy escapism, & the false sense of shelter from consequences or responsibility made it all the easier to fall prey to delusions & manic urges.
A common one, but a goodie: Michael DEFINITELY tried to burn down the Fazbear’s Fright attraction with Springtrap inside. Which, uhm... didn’t pan out HAHA, but I like to think Springtrap managed to scramble out through the vents or something just in time, as he’s been shown to move INCREDIBLY quick thru them : 3 My beautiful agile wife who smells like long-expired garlic knots <3
Speaking of the attraction itself, for some reason when I was a kid I thought it was an entire mini-theme park, like those cheap small-town carnivals you go to as a kid but apparently it’s... just the restaurant. I think. BUT IN ALL HONESTY, LITTLE MOSAIC WAS COOKING WITH THAT IDEA!!!! SO IT’S PART OF MY CANON NOW!!!!! I like to think this was also the early beginnings of Fazbear Entertainment’s weird obsession with pouring a fuck ton of money into the franchise LMAO
SPEAKING OF FAZBEAR ENTERTAINMENT, ACTUALLY!!!! In my head, this all started as just a small-town diner co-owned between William & Henry, & some guys in suits looking to invest in something approached them & William was like “HENRY.... HENRY MY NO-HOMO IN ARMS WE COULD MAKE A FORTUNE WE COULD DO SO MUCH GOOD HERE” & Henry was like “eeehhh... I like just keeping it local.” And Will was like “aw okay” but once Henry went missing a little bit after Charlie’s death, William was already heading down his downward spiral so while the offer was still up he was like “urrrgghghgh okay fuck it” & signed onto the agreement. You stupid idiot man.
ANYWAYS, I really don’t think it was too long after this that Henry’s old, decrepit ass finally managed to conceive a plan of action with Michael. I also think Michael was probably staying with him for most of this time after both siblings passed & his mother stopped coming home after a while.
I don’t really think she died. Maybe. I feel like she was always sweet, but gradually grew more distant as William did so. But in a different way. I don’t really know how to explain this one, other than she probably felt very pushed aside (much like the fandom does to her already COUGH COUGH!!! FUCKING COUGH). And then after Elizabeth passed she just started going out a lot to try to avoid everything without taking Michael into consideration since he was older already, & Henry likely caught wind of this somehow & seeked him out. & yeah she eventually just stopped coming home, so. : (
OKAY YA’LL EVER NOTICE HOW CHARLIE’S DEATH HAPPENED BECAUSE SHE WAS TRAPPED OUTSIDE ALONE & IGNORED (LIKELY ON HER FUCKING BIRTHDAY) & THE MCI KIDS LEFT HER ALONE IN DEATH TOO??? THEY MOVED ON WITHOUT HER. WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. WHAT THE FUUUUCCCKKK!!!!!!!!
Social isolation is a HUGE similarity Charlie & William shared, in my mind. If she had lived longer, I like to think the two of them would have had a lot to relate to each other on. Both having to shoulder responsibilities they don’t want/have never asked for, except Charlie does it anyways while William tries to escape it. They’re natural foils of each other. & she was William’s first kill. Gods.
FNAF 4
I don’t care what ANYONE SAYS !!! IN MY MIND ELIZABETH PASSED AFTER EVAN !!!! SHE WAS AT A PLAYDATE WITH CHARLIE OR SOMETHING I DON’T CAAAARRREEEEUH!!!!
Even though there’s really no substantial evidence for The Crying Child’s name being “Evan”, I honestly really like it – it seems like the type of name William would pick out for him. I’m not sure why. Just seems like a name he’d like. Same with Michael’s name, in all honesty. Of course, that was, uh... tainted for him later.
Evan absolutely has some form of extreme anxiety disorder, I think we can all agree on that one. Granted, a lot of his fears surrounding the animatronics in particular come from night terrors. : ( With that being said, he almost certainly has some kind of sleep disorder, as well. I always seesaw between stuff like narcolepsy/intrusive sleep disorder & stuff like insomnia or some form of sleep apnea. No in-between, sorry Evan.
(I’M EXCLUDING NIGHTMARE GAS FROM MY PERSONAL CANON FOR THIS GAME BECAUSE THAT’S STUPID!!!!! I’M MOVING IT TO SECURITY BREACH ERA IT CAN DO SOMETHING THERE IF IT WANTS BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE FOR 1983!!!! SAME WITH MOST OF THE SOTM SHIT I’M NOT EVEN GONNA COVER IT IN THIS POST AAUUUGGGHHH)
He’s also autistic. And ADHD. And maybe Bipolar. Yeah, I’m projecting. SUE ME!!!!
His favorite was always Fredbear before the night terrors I think, which is why he has the plushie. Now, listen, uhm. Okay. So. Do I think it would be out of character for William to spy on him thru a plushie? No, not at all. He’s insane & wants to see his kids more, but can’t bring himself to leave work. Plus, I can see him being extra worried about Evan due to how much more fragile he is compared to the other two. Do I find this possibility unlikely in any sense of the word? Not at all! But... for some reason it’s just hard for me to buy into?? It just doesn’t seem like the kind of thing William would have the time to set up (as much as he wants to), nor would he realistically have a good place at work to monitor him freely, y’know? I dunno. HOWEVER, I do have a headcanon to replace this, that being: auditory hallucinations! Or anything adjacent, really. Similarly to William finding comfort with Springbonnie, I just find the idea interesting of Evan taking after him in that similar vein! Psychic Friend Fredbear is that boy’s best friend 5ever : (
I WILL SAY!!! I don’t think the FNAF 4 gameplay is what every night terror looks like for Evan, but it IS one that he experiences during his stay at the hospital after the bite. He was only kept alive by the machines. So, eventually, they had to just... pull the plug.
And because he resonated so deeply with Fredbear, he came to possess the suit along with Cassidy later on.
Now, the way the bite itself plays out in the game is sort of confusing, in all honesty. Of course, all the bullying Michael pulled on Evan up until that point did seem like the kind of immature bullshit a teenage older brother like him would do. But... I don’t know, I really can’t see a teenager & his friends using the words & phrases that are used in-game to make fun of him at the restaurant, HAHAHA. I also? Feel like them putting Evan in Fredbear’s mouth was like??? What did you think was going to happen. I’m still work-shopping how I would tweak the event since it’s such a vital plot beat, but for now let’s just say it’s unlikely Michael had even a basic understanding of how the animatronics worked. Sure, he was a HUGE Foxy fan, but I highly doubt he was ever into engineering/mechanics the way William was. Moreover, he most CERTAINLY never listened to any past Willy rambles regarding the technical aspects of his job, so even a basic concept such as springlocks or the machinations being so fragile that they could slip from exposure to moisture completely eluded him at the time.
All of that being said, why do I think Michael even started bullying Evan to begin with? Well, there were a lot of factors at play here; William becoming busier & busier with his work, Mrs. Afton hounding him for it which definitely added extra pressure onto his shoulders which would have resulted in accidental lashing out on occasion, (once or twice directed at Michael even), both parents growing more & more distant & prioritizing the younger ones before finally unintentionally leaving all three of them to their own devices... it was so much. So much. A mentally ill businessman was struggling & failing to balance his work & home life. Mrs. Afton, though she adored her children, couldn’t take care of all three of them herself & eventually lost herself to her own forms of escapism. It was really a matter of flawed parents who loved their children not knowing how to properly nurture them under the current circumstances & Michael lashing out on his siblings because they got the last scraps of attention. Not to mention the fact that being a teenager seriously fucks with your hormones & therefore your general thought processes around these sorts of things.
Michael struggled to fall asleep at night for a LONG time after seeing his little brother’s head crushed in the maw of his favorite character. Even when he did eventually manage to sleep again, he always had nightmares.
William wasn’t much different in that regard. For the first while, he felt shock & grief, but it gradually twisted into rage towards Michael. I don’t think he ever expressed it to him explicitly, but they both knew. They both knew.
