Hot take, apparently: Joker as a murder clown that everyone is scared of is essential to Batman's character.

Batman hinges everything he stands for on the philosophy that there is always an alternative to killing. Everyone can be helped and redeemed.

That is why almost all of his villains have redeeming qualities. Fries can hardly be called a villain, Baby Dahl and Croc are exploited people trapped in bodies they hate. Even Riddler and Crane are revolutionary geniuses.

But Joker is a monster. He skins orphans alive withe the same glee that a child pranks their grandmother with a whoopie cushion. He almost seems to punish Batman for daring to think redemption is possible for a demon like him.

He is the ultimate test of the one rule Batman has assigned himself. The one rule that would destroy Bruce completely if broken.
