Okay look… how important is source material, really, for individual fandom enjoyment purposes?

Because yes, it all had to start somewhere, but we can just Darwin the whole thing, right?

I once watched a two hour pilot for a show and then binge read somewhere between one and two million words of fanfiction for the following couple of weeks and it was great. (And never watched another episode because I quickly determined that the actual show was not going to be very enjoyable for me personally)

Other things I go back to the original source material over and over and still enjoy it for its own sake, before ending up on yet another set of Ao3 tag searches.

Comics are all over the place so honestly I don’t even care what I do or do not consume there.

But, we can enjoy eggs Benedict without studying the anatomy of a chicken. Or a dinosaur for that matter.

Does this make any sense whatsoever?

Because I feel like we can all have our favorite finches and not worry about how closely they resemble an Archaeopteryx.

Just sayin.

TL;DR: Canon can and will be cheerfully ignored as it suits me.

Also, Darwin is now a verb and I will personally see to it that my head is filled with nice headcanons in which no one is being portrayed in a racist manner or having their personality or abilities tread upon for the sake of another character and their manpain.
