Danny is just trying to hide his secret identity while upgrading some sort of ghost tech for Batman when he stumbles across Duke
Wait a minute, Duke's seen that orb of light before (the first time he worked with Phantom he squinted the whole time)
Duke is trying not to make it obvious he has light powers, but its REALLY difficult when there's essentially a flashlight shining directly in your eyes and it's kinda awkward to look at anything but Danny every time he talks to him
Danny is sad because Duke is avoiding him :'(
When Danny finds out the truth, he feels super bad and suppresses his core so that it's not as bright
Duke's horrified when he finds out that Jason has the same thing and doesn't know how to control it yet since his core was only recently fixed
I'm re-reading eye in the sky and just wanted to share the following:
“That’s what you wanted to talk about?” Wayne asked. Duke flipped him off on Gotham-honed instinct, dropping his hand when Wayne gave it a vaguely displeased look.
this made me laugh so hard, like Bruce dealt with this before, he raised Dick and Jason, he's not impressed
“Hey,” Duke said, before they were back out in the hallway. “Can we -- like -- talk for a moment? Before we have to,” he gestured at his eyes, trying to mime his powers. “You know.” Wayne sent a loaded look at Anna, who suddenly decided that the sink across the room was very interesting. “Quickly.” “What the fuck.” “That’s what you wanted to talk about?” Wayne asked. Duke flipped him off on Gotham-honed instinct, dropping his hand when Wayne gave it a vaguely displeased look.
it's even funnier if you read why Bruce is unimpressed. Duke basically asks him for 30 seconds of undetected fully verbal conversation safe from the Regime and then promptly wastes 10 seconds of it going "What the fuck" to Bruce's face.
you get used to it
cass: *emerging out of the shadows* what's for breakfast duke, new to the house: AAH- WHAT THE FUCK- alfred, not missing a beat: Good morning, Ms Cassandra. I am making blueberry pancakes, as requested by Master Richard, though he does not seem to have woken up yet. jason, peeking his head out of the kitchen, somehow fully dressed in Red Hood gear, except sans helmet and plus frilly pink apron: lazy ass probably won't crawl out of whatever hole he's died in till two, he went to sleep at four this morning. cass: *nods sagely* duke: *still frozen in shock and horror, internally screaming and gaping* damian, stepping out from behind alfred: Good morning, morons. I'm surprised to see you're all alive, though Drake appears to be nearing death's door. everyone: *glances over at the corner of a random hallway, where a drooping, haggard time lurks* tim, eyes manic and smudged with the darkest eyebags known to man: WHAT DAY IS IT? bruce, hair unkempt and sleepy looking: *yawn* thursday. alfred: It is Saturday, Master Tim. Master Bruce, you could do with a pick-me-up. (derogatory) duke: WHAT. THE. FUCK. alfred: Language, Master Duke. dick and steph: *still blissfully asleep in their rooms, dick is passed tf out on his stomach, steph is sprawled on her back in a stunning imitation of a starfish*
The Robin Curse
Basically I had this random thought that I needed more family drama. I mean like a way to make the family somehow hate eachother even more, but also throw eachother at eachother.
So, The Robin Curse.
Basically, Lady Gotham wasn't happy after Bruce passed Dick’s mantle without his permission, so she cursed the mantle to kill the user of the mantle.
But she regretted her decision after she found she really liked the new Robin, so because she couldn’t remove the curse, she changed it to always bring the user back to life.
And I'm making this Dick's problem.
So, the main story is about Dick having to babysit all of the ex-Robin's, and in the middle of Bruce being lost in time, + Tim not going alone because dying made him realize he didn't need to please everyone, and if no one would help him, he wasn't going to do anything about it other than to throw comments randomly about it.
Anyways, here is the before/how they died.
Jason is pretty obvious, Joker beats him up, explodes him, and he dies by smoke inhalation, ninjas find him, Talia throws him into the pit, blah, blah, blah.
Then Tim dies via bloodloss, Jason cuts his neck, he dies, Jason regrets his actions, panics, runs away, Dick finds him, funeral, two month later, while Dick and Bruce are trying to kill Jason, Jason comes to visit the grave to find Tim halfway out of the grave and he runs to Talia with braindead Tim and they throw him into the pit.
Tim gets Ra's interest, but he nopes out of there fast, he separates himself from the family, while bringing Cass with him.
Stephanie becomes Robin not long after, he and Steph were besties so there is an emotional conversation, and they go back to being besties, and she becomes the only bridge to the family.
Then she dies via black mask.
Tim's relation to the family is a barely hanging thread, Jason's is a mix of a barely hanging thread and guilt, so they both avoid each other, hurt mixed everywhere.
Damian comes in, and Bruce "dies", Damian becomes Robin, Tim is not happy that his best friend was replaced even if she didn't come back, he really thought that ended with Jason since when he himself was replaced he was alive, just away, but he keeps quiet, not wanting to do a Jason.
Then Damian attacks him, and he does a Jason, and Damian dies.
They think they're luck of getting Robin back stopped with Tim since Steph never came back, but just a week later Damian's grave is empty, and they Dick, Jason and a guilty Tim run to find a tiny angry Damian, glaring at Tim, that evaporates half of Tim's guilt.
Steph revives about a year after her death, and a month after Damian's revival, at the same time Dick is occupied trying to calm the 3 angry brothers while also resolving the press of this random kids being presumed dead then coming back, and he decided it would be a great idea to foster a kid called Duke in the meantime.
She is taken by an assassin assigned by Talia to always look for a grave being messed with and a random braindead kid wandering around.
Steph is thrown into the pit, Ra's becomes irritated with all the reviving acts and commands Talia to throw her at anyone else and stop taking Bruce's kids in after he is already dead.
She gives her to Alfred, and Dick has a daily dosage of migraine.
Dick decides to bring Duke to Bludhaven, and gets a bigger apartment, like, really bigger, with a lot more rooms, and decides to throw every past Robin into it.
He invites Jason in a way that says it's not his choice.
He drags Tim kicking and trying to blackmail.
He drags Steph kicking and manipulating.
And Damian comes willingly after a promise of getting to be his own hero with Dick
Duke: If you got arrested, what would be the charges?
Harper: Theft.
Stephanie: Disturbin the peace.
Cassandra: Aggravated assault.
Damian: Arson.
Jason: All the above. In that order, probably.
One more snippet
Duke took a deep breath. “You’re telling me ghosts are real?” “Sorta,” Jason answered. “Are you telling me you’re a ghost?” “Sorta.” Duke took in another deep breath. “I swear to God. One of these days, I’m gonna kill you again.”
I think I might be better at marketing than a lot of companies lmao anyway, if you look in the last tag you will see more of this fic
Tim “blackmailed his way into the family to take care of Batman” Drake: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SLEPT?!
Bruce “world’s okayest dad” Wayne: When was the last time YOU slept?
Duke “the day shift” Thomas: [banging on the wall] I know To The Hour the last time I slept
