I won't lie to you I AM a little fond of those "mortal au poseidon is a millionaire and finds out about percy and takes custody of him" fics but they're always like sally was murdered by gabe or died in an accident or something equally sad. I want one that still keeps the base plot of the lightning thief. just imagine how hilarious it would be if random rich guy poseidon turns on his tv one day and sees that 1) the woman he cheated on his wife with is missing in a mysterious car explosion and 2) her 12 year old who is being labeled a domestic terrorist looks exactly like him. the olympian family pr firm is going fucking CRAZY.

i'm so so happy about the fact that they still included tyson telling percy about how he prayed for a friend and poseidon sent him percy, and i also think that the place they moved it to is perfect. it hits just that little bit harder because percy doesn't understand why tyson's so grateful to poseidon- what for?- and then tyson just says, so simply but so impactfully, that he asked the gods for a friend and then he gained a brother.

i don’t know if it was because i read the books in sixth grade, but poseidon’s “your mother is a queen among women” & offer to build sally a palace at the bottom of the sea never moved me. personally, the grandness of it all felt a bit superficial.

his “you say it, and i will listen” & “love, another” lines in the show, though? very effective—i actually believe percy was conceived by love, precisely because everything’s so subtle. so sincere.

while when percy asked poseidon if that's what he was made for, for war, poseidon immediately shut it down by saying love is more powerful than the will of the gods and the fates, that percy was and is loved and is his son first

oh percy you are so loved and cherished by your parents and because of that you will break the cycle of abuse and ensure a future for other demigods

You know what would have been interesting? If Poseidon wasn't a foil to Gabe by being a good but absent dad where Gabe was a present but abusive parent, but if he foiled Gabe by being bad in a different way.

Imagine Percy getting paternal affection for the first time in his life but then slowly coming to the realization that Gabe was a bully who hated him, but Poseidon is a bully who loves him. Poseidon encouraging Percy's anger and violence because his sons are entitled to be as angry and violent as they want. Poseidon magic-ing him out of trouble for fighting at school because Percy should be allowed to hit whoever he wants!

It would change a lot of plot beats and would probably change what his relationship with Sally was like but it would be so interesting, wouldn't it?

as percy gets older, he hears “son of the sea god”/“lord percy” less and less until he’s like only referred to as “my lord” bc sea creatures and spirits and a lot of minor gods have trouble distinguishing between percy and triton/poseidon depending on his age. when he was visibly a teenager, it was easy to figure he was percy. then he got in his twenties and people began mistaking him for triton. then in his forties people couldn’t tell the difference between him and poseidon so they just play it safe
